Hi Hilary, First let me say "Oh what a tangled web we weave"...................LOL. I decided to try for David McPhaden on free BMD............................ Looking for a birth about 1866.......and Nothing. I did find a family in Ecclesall Bierlow on the 1871 census the father being David and from Scotland but spelt McPheden he was 43 but he had a 13 year old son David..........But still not the correct age for you David........ The older David died in 1886...... There was also a David McFeden born the March qtr of 1871 in Ecclesall Bierlow 9c 344. No a common name for Sheffield...... I wonder if he could have been an illegitimate child of a daughter of the older David McPheden.... This family lived on Carr Road........Walkley....... That's my two cents worth........
