Can anyone tell me when they died or census info for these people. Have church cert. for marriages but they tell me nothing Hi, You would need a little more information than you have given before they could be looked up in a census. I presume the places of birth are Sheffield but have you any idea what area. What year they were born. Censuses cna only be consulted if you have a few facts. Can anyone out there please point me in the right direction to find the birth of David MCPHADEN who was my father's "stepfather". David was born in Sheffield according to the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census records. In 1881 he was living as a boarder (age 16) at Greggs Row, Hunningley Lane, Ardsley, Barnsley, Yorkshire with 3 other boarders in the home of William and Mary JEFFERY and their 3 children - David was working as a Colliery Pony Driver. My Father, Albert BRAITHWAITE, told me that when David first came to live with the BRAITHWAITE family at 43 York Street, Brampton Bierlow, (1891 Census) he changed his name for some reason unknown to my Father. In the Census he is shown as David JOHNSON, Boarder, single, age 25, Colliery Labourer (Em'ee), born Sheffield, Yorkshire. At this time he was working at Great Houghton Colliery. Although David has an Irish name, my Father was convinced he wasn't Irish. In the 1901 Census the BRAITHWAITE family are living at 26 Winterwell Road, Wath upon Dearne and David is shown again as David MCPHADEN, Boarder, single, age 35, Cole Miner Labourer Below, born Yorks, Sheffield. My Grandfather, Josiah BRAITHWAITE died in 1914. David and my Grandmother, Hannah BRAITHWAITE became a 'couple' but an older cousin doesn't think they got married. I can't find a record to date of their marriage but there are two graves in West Melton church graveyard - Josiah has a separate grave and Hannah and David are there too in a grave together - their grave inscribed as "In loving memory of Hannah the dearly beloved wife of David McPhaden who died 10 Feb 1924 aged 63 years. "Her end was peace"; Also of the above named David McPhaden, who died Dec 4th 1926 aged 61 years "Thy will be done." On David's death certificate it shows the death of David at 26 Winterwell Road, Wath upon Dearne with the informant shown as Charles D McPhaden, Nephew, 34 Burman Road, Wath upon Dearne. I would love to know if anyone is researching the McPhaden family and if anyone can point me in the right direction to find the McPhaden family in Sheffield in the 1800s and the birth of David McPhaden. I have had no luck with 1837 on Line or the births on Free BMD and Ancestry.com Hilary Jackson
Hi Hilary I will send you a page from the 1871 census (off list) which could be a possible for your David although the name is a bit of an odd spelling, see what you think.
