Lisa, This isn't really any help to you but I've just had a look on Ancestry for you and can only agree with what you have said in your message below. I also have found him in the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census but he does not turn up in the 1871 when he should be aged 17. I have also tried searching for a male RUTHERFORD born c1854 in Sheffield just in case he has been transcribed incorrectly due to unreadable writing and still turned up a blank. Could the family have been out of the country in 1871?.................I ask this because I had a 2nd G.Grandfather who does not show up on the 1901 Census because he was in Russia at the time because of his work.
