Hi all, One of the surnames I have been researching is the Musson family, who were clockmakers and jewellers. William Martin Musson Wm Martin Musson, 53, watchmaker, born Louth was living in Eccleshall Bierlow in 1891, and in Hallam in 1901. His son, also William, aged 22, a law solicitor's clerk in 1891, was in Eccleshall Union workhouse in 1891, when it seems to have full of all sorts of professional men, so I wondered if it was being used like a YMCA, when I thought no one was encouraged to go to the workhouse as conditions were so harsh inside. Has anyone else on this list have relations who were in this workhouse then, or know what was the workhouse was used for in 1891? I have looked at an excellent website about workhouses in the area and according to the photographs on the site and the maps it was of a fair size at one time. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?EcclesallBierlow/EcclesallBierlow.shtml John Readman
