My 2 x Great Grandfather was Christopher BRAITHWAITE. This was the name given on the wedding certificate of my Great Grandparents - Robert BRAITHWAITE married Harriet MICKLETHWAITE in Penistone 12 Feb 1849 where "Cristopher" (sic) Braithwaite was described as Father of Robert and that his occupation was "Farmer". All census entries for Robert BRAITHWAITE state born Hartwith, but to date I have not managed to trace a baptisms for Robert and therefore I don't know his Mother's name. He was born c1824. Robert and Harriet spent most of their married life in Hunshelf and Stocksbridge, Yorkshire before moving to Dronfield, DBY (1891 Census) and then moving up to Workington when the steelworks moved from Dronfield to Workington. Robert and Harriet both died in Workington. I have found an indenture for a property in Rotherham where the purchaser was Christopher BRAITHWAITE "late of Awkley in the County of Nottingham" dated 18 March 1820. This property was a Beerhouse in Westgate Rotherham which Christopher kept until 1825. I believe Awkley was Aukley, near Finningley. I have also found a marriage on the IGI - Christopher BRAITHWAITE married Elizabeth HANCOATS 14 Dec 1818 Doncaster, Yorkshire. Does anyone have this marriage within their own research, please? There was also a Christopher BRAITHWAITE in the 1841 Census living in Sheffield (South) his profession was shown on the Census as that of "Shopkeeper" and born in Yorkshire - he was age 80 and living in the same premises was Mary Braithwaite age 50 Not born in Yorkshire. I sent for a death certificate for a Christopher Braithwaite who died 16 June 1844, address New George Street and he was 83 years, and his occupation 'farmer'. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane. Does anyone have any of these people in their family - this is my brickwall and hopefully this could be my Great Great Grandfather. I have more information on Robert and Harriet BRAITHWAITE and their children to pass on if anyone is interested. I am forwarding this email to the Yorkshire and Doncaster Lists , so sorry if you receive it more than once.
