Hello List and Nicole, I am replying to this email somewhat belatedly, as we have just made a breakthrough in the search for our family of McKay in Sheffield. I am not sure if there is any connection, with the Mary McKay whom you list in your email Nicole, (see below) however, I think that you may gain from knowing that my particular McKays had been giving me a headache for years. My great Grandmother insisted on every census that she was born in Sheffield. I was very sceptical about this. I'm sorry Grandma, I should never have doubted you. My sister after much sleuthing, angst and a few occasional temper tantrums came up with the following last night from the 1851 census on Ancestry.com Sheffield... St. James Parish... 39 Smith St.(think this is the correct designation difficult to read) H.O. 107/2338 p. 218 James McHugh!!! (not) should have read McKay. Head. Occupation 'Cooper' born County Sligo Ireland. age 54 Mary wife " " " " " " age 40 Jane daughter born Barnsley Yorkshire age 21 James son born Northamps. (hard to decipher) age 14 Undecipherable. dau born Sheffield age 11 Catherine dau (my elusive great grandmother) born Sheffield age 9 Andrew son born Sheffield age 3 undecipherable. dau born Sheffield age 9 months. I have to wonder if James McKay wasn't married twice? there is a 7 year gap between his first two children...in that case my Great Grandmother was likely born of James McKay's second wife... I am pretty confident that this is my family for the following reasons. James McKay, occupation 'Cooper' is listed on my great grandmother Catherine McKay's wedding cert to Robert Johnson, at St George's Church Sheffield in 1861 as her father... My great grandmother Catherine had only one son whom she named James Andrew Johnson. the Birth date for her is also correct from her Marriage cert, and tallies with the census. I believe the reason why we could not find her until now is that she was that she was not registered asa a birth until 1845...also wrongly written as McGahey!!! not KcKay... although born in 1842. Catherine (Kate) also named her daughters Mary, Jane and Kate. The question which I have now is: as a 'Cooper' which Firm would James McKay most likely have been working for in Sheffield? I believe there was some connection of the Johnsons and McKays in the Distillery business. (Whiskey). James McKay's son Andrew McKay, apparently emigrated to America as did my great uncle James Andrew Johnson later on. Mary Anne, the widow of Andrew McKay, (brother of my great grandmother Kate Johnson nee` McKay) travelled extensively from America to England in the late 1800's up to about 1909. at least once every two years. She was a resident of Connecticut from 1895 on, and listed as an American Citizen on several censuses but clearly born in Sheffield...she was also married in Sheffield and the Marriage cert does rightly name her husband as Andrew MacKay...... any help would be much appreciated re Coopers or Distillers in Sheffield. Kindest regards, Josephine M. Laxton Ontario, Canada. p.s. I guess research in Ireland is next on the List, although I don't hold out much hope. By my estimate from the 1851 census, James McKay was born in 1797 in County Sligo (maybe Belfast). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dusty & Barbara Miller" <[email protected].nz> To: "Sheffield List" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2007 3:48 PM Subject: [SHEFF] Mary M[a]cKAY > Hi List, > I am trying to find my Great Grandmother. > Mary Ann M[a]cKAY bn c 1881 the only record I have of her is her marr > certificate to James WINTER in Aug 1902. > Her record is Mary Ann M[a]cKAY age 21 yrs old last known residence Abbey > Lane Beau Chief father William M[a]cKAY deceased occ Tailor Marr in > Ecclesall Bierlow Sheffield in the parish church of Norton Woodseats Derby > That is all I can find of her I have tried the Irish Census & English Census > no sign of her > > Could anyone help find her in parish records or her father please > Nicole MILLER > Marton NZ
