Can anyone tell me if City Road Cemetery is anywhere near or at least within reasonable walking distance of the train station in Sheffield? I will be in Sheffield next week and unfortunately will only have a few hours to spend there. Originally I was planning to spend a few days there, but my plans had to be changed - oh well. I wil be travelling from Liverpool and decided to make a stop enroute to London and visit the cemetery to see where my gggrandmother is buried - no stone, but I at least want to visit. Also, if any of you are locals, do you by chance know if there are lockers at the station where I can stash my luggage (just one small bag actually) while making my whirlwind visit? I tried to find out, but there doesn't seem to be any information of that sort on the website for the train station. Do you think it is feasible to visit the cemetery, stop by the Cathedral and stop by the Sheffield GRO and order a death cert, given that I will only have about 3 hours? This is a bit of a last minute decision to make this trip and as I leave Monday (from Chicago), I am really down to the wire to make arrangements! So, any advice anyone can send will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much! Beth in Chicago

According to Streetmap (web site) it's about 2 - 2½ miles. A walk from the station, should take less than ¾hr. Based on an "average" walking speed of 4mph. Mind you, topography might affect that. Ann says it's uphill. > - no stone, but I at least want to visit. The Sheffield Register Office is in Pinstone Street, not too far from the Cathedral and station. > given that I will only have about 3 hours? This is a bit of a last Doing all three in three hours would be cutting it fine, on foot, IMO. You can speed things up (a little) by printing out the relevant certificate application form by getting it from; http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-copy-certificates You might do the RO first (you might have to queue if it's busy), and see what time you have left. There's also a possibility of getting a taxi from the station to the cemetery to speed things up a bit more, or even getting a later train from Sheffield, if there's on available. Otherwise, it might be a case of "pick any two from three". -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" I am alone there's nobody there I Look Alone - Buzzcocks
I don't think there should be a problem doing this in 3 hours. The main uncertainties will be, the time it takes to find the right plot in City Road (a very large cemetery) and the time it takes to order the certificate at the Register Office (which is now in the Town Hall). You can of course order certificates by post (information at http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/getting-copy-certificates ) but it looks as though payment may be a problem as they don't accept credit cards. Getting a taxi from the station to the cemetery will certainly save time. As an alternative you could get supertram from the back of the station to Spring Lane which is c 100 yards from the cemetery (but probably 300 from the main entrance). Coming back you can either go back to the tram stop and get a tram to the Cathedral or get a 94/95 bus down City Road which also stops opposite the Cathedral. The Town Hall is just the length of Fargate from the Cathedral - 1 minute walk. I don't remember seeing lockers in the station, but there are certainly lockers in the interchange (bus station) which is 1 minute walk from outside the (front of) the station. if you chose to go there to leave your bag you can get a taxi from there as well.
