I make it: Private (N.S.) 23342368 R.A.O.C. = Royal Army Ordnance Corps (Building Contractor's General Labourer) My interpretation is that (if you are correct with the N.S.) he was doing National Service, but his civilian job was a Building Contractor's general labourer.     3. I would agree with you on all points. On my own birth certificate it gives my father's military information (this was during the war) and underneath it, it says "Electrical Engineer Oil Company" so they obviously gave their military and civilian jobs on certificates which was a great help.
