I am assuming that the 1901 census return for John A De (Dr) Murray is your man: as he was born in Sydney, Australia presumably nothing will be found for him in England for the previous 30 years or so. I would venture to suggest that his ancestors were probably Murray (or Muray) and that he added the "de" himself. Atherstone is a place in Warwickshire: try google maps for a location: it's somewhere between Nuneaton and Sutton Coldfield. It could be a clue as to his parents' roots.
