Hi All: John OXLEY was bapt 13 Feb 1818 in Conisbrough. In 1841 he was living in Nether Hallam, age 20 (20-24), with an Elizabeth, also age 20. Presumably, Elizabeth was his wife. A son, Arthur, was born in 1842/3, and there's a FreeBMD birth registration for an Arthur in the Sep 1/4 1843, Rotherham District which likely will be for their child. However, Elizabeth's maiden name probably won't be on the certificate, so I haven't sent for it. There also is a death registration for an Elizabeth OXLEY in 1843 in the Rotherham District. I've sent for the certificate, even though I doubt that it will provide her maiden name. John married Mary Ann LLOYD in Wath upon Dearne 10 Feb 1845, and on their marriage certificate John is a Widower. John & Mary Ann subsequently had several children, all of whom I've been able to track. FreeBMD shows no marriage of a John OXLEY to an Elizabeth 1838-1841 in the Rotherham District. However, in the Sheffield District there are 3 possible marriage entries during that time. The potential Elizabeths (all in the Jun 1/4) are: CROOKES, 1838, 22 410 BURDEKIN, 1840, 22 412 SMITH, 1841, 22 406 The IGI sheds no light on the subject. I'm wondering if someone, when not singing carols or pulling crackers, would be able to narrow down the trio of Elizabeths (preferably to just one). And if not, I still will say Happy Christmas! Hello Dave, I am not sure why you think that the birth certificate is unlikely to have the mother's maiden name - it should include the married and maiden names and also the name from any previous marriage. cheers, Hugh ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 24, 2007 1:09 PM Subject: [SHEFF] John OXLEY marriage to an Elizabeth > Hi All: > > John OXLEY was bapt 13 Feb 1818 in Conisbrough. There also is a death It ought to be. Along with any previous married name. A lot depends on how the relevant questions were asked of her, or whoever the informant was. It's only pre-civil registration baptismal records that don't carry mother's maiden name. When you get back far enough, you find only the father's name recorded in baptismal records. This makes for difficult research with four people called John Smith (for example) all using the same church. > registration for an Elizabeth OXLEY in 1843 in the Rotherham > District. If you've bought the death cert purely to acquire her maiden name I'm afraid to say you've wasted your money. Only marriage and birth certificates have that information. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain Sweet Child O'Mine - Guns 'N' Roses
