Hello Tracey, Welcome to the List. There are a number of avenues that could be pursued:- 1. There could be a contemporary newspaper report of the events - I have found that similar thefts e.g sheep stealing were often reported. Do you know where the counting house was situated? The newspaper report might give further details such as William's marital condition; his trade; children etc. 2. It is quite likely that if William was a native of Sheffield and the crime took place in the Sheffield area that his original conviction would have been either at Sheffield or sometimes Rotherham. There are records for these courts held at Wakefield Record Office. Hope this helps Phil Ford www.researchingrelatives.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- > Hi List, > I am new to this list and i am researching William WOODCOCK who is > my 4xgreat grandfather. > William was b abt 1797 > according to his convict papers his native place is Sheffield > He was tried and convicted at the York quarter sessions on the 30th April > 1821 for breaking into a counting house and was subsequently transported > to > Australia. > My query is where do i go to find more information on this gentleman > And what possible records would be available and as he was convicted in > York > is prehaps a diferent mailing list more appropriate?
