Hi Angela, Thanks for the correct street name. I have bought the only two certificates in the GRO that are close and they are not the correct ones. Knowing the street and district location will help me. Perhaps he isn't registered, or perhaps the birthdate that has been passed along is out by a year. I thought that I might try looking at some parish records if I couild figure out the nearby churches. I have found this 1890's map http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~engsheffield/streetrelated/1890smap.htm <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Eengsheffield/streetrelated/1890smap.htm> I have been looking at the above map and have found Sussex Street between the River Don and the Sheffield Canal just above where the railways cross. I see three churches: To the south on Broad St, to the East on Tinsley Rd, and to the west on Mowbray St. I have looked at the Genuki list of churches, but cannot match any of these with the churches listed on the link below with any certainty http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Sheffield/ChurchesOfEngland.html I have also looked up St. John's, Park, Sheffield in google but cannot find any reference to the parish records, and can't see that it is listed on the churches that have been filmed on www.familysearch.org. Can someone familiar with this area of Sheffield suggest which churches were nearby and in existence in 1853? My second question is - "Does ecclesiastical Parish" in a census indicate the nearest parish church? Thanks, Charlotte Edwards Vancouver, BC, Canada >From: "A.
