Folks Let me thank all the people who responded to my question about travel before railways. Your comments have given me many new avenues to explore. One final comment which I should have included in my first email was that when the Rochdale Canal was completed in 1804 there was a direct canal link from Hull to Manchester, and hence Liverpool.
