Hi, I hav e been looking for my Aunt Beatrice Bates [born Parry] born on 24 January 1884 at Granby Street, Leicester. She moved to Sheffield with the family shortly after her birth and her mother, who was born in Sheffield returned to her roots together with her father. Further children were born in Sheffield to the Parry's and basically they were a Sheffield Family. In the 1911 census she is living at home with her parents at Bower Road, Crookesmoor and unmarried. I know that she had an affair with a married man using her sister's name Ida May [Dolly] Parry. She is supposed to have married a man called -?- Bates but nobody remembers him. However she was always known as Mrs. Bates. When I knew her in the 1950's, she lived at Rock Street, Pitsmoor, and had a lodger called Mr. Harris who lived in her front room and was an invalid from the first world war. I used to be sent to the off-licence at the end of the road for a jug of beer for Mr. Harris's supper. She was a rather eccentric lady and very superstitious. She was supposed to have a daughter but although she was said to live in Sheffield nobody knew anything about her. I have no idea when and where she died and if anyone could tell me how to research her, I should be very glad. JUDY ELKINGTON [N. Hi Judith, Have you had a look at any of the Directories that are listed on our site "Sheffield Indexers" if not there then try the site I believe is called "Historical Directories". I think they are based at Leicester University. I am sure Hugh will see this and correct me if I am wrong.. LOL. I have the 1920 Directory which I will check for you and get back to you.... Bye for now.
