No Jane - they are photocopies BUT there is writing at the top which is done when you order the certificate. It is this writing which can be incorrect. 1. I received a certificate which referred to the Birth as in BEAMINSTER which is in Dorset whereas it was in BEDMINSTER which was in Somerset. The photocopied part of the Certificate was quite accurate but the typing at the top was incorrect. 2 I received a certificate which quite clearly gave the year of Birth at 1842 but across the top where it is typed it said 1862. I had ordered the correct certificate which was 1842. This Certificate I am talking about now was 13th May 1914 at 47 Midland Road, U.D. (which I know means Urban District) but the typed section across the top says "in the County of Rotherham C.B." This is typed by the person when the application was made at least 6 weeks ago. Check on your certificates and you will see what I mean. As I now have over 200 Certificates I certainly know what to expect. On FreeBMD it quite clearly states "The district Rotherham spans the boundaries of the counties of Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and West Riding of Yorkshire; information about it can be found here." As far as I'm aware there has never been a County of Rotherham!!!!!
