I have recently received a couple of Death Certificates from the GRO which had typing errors on them, I am getting very frustrated by them especially now they have put the prices up. I think they have taken on temporary staff to catch up with the backlog. This Birth Certificate has taken over a month to reach me and I'm not convinced they have the right information there, please can someone advise. My concern is that it says: 1914 Birth in the Sub-district of N.W. Rotherham in the County of Rotherham C.B. My question is: Why should it say "County of Rotherham C.B."? Is this an error? Secondly, I see there are two Midland Roads - one Mexborough and the other Swinton One is S61 (Mexborough) and the other S64 (near Swinton railway station). How can I tell which one would be correct in 1914? Liz www.btinternet.com/~e.newbery OPC for Street, Somerset
Swinton and Mexborough are both to the northeast of Rotherham. The only Midland Road in Rotherham district in White's 1919/20 directory was in Masbro', which is to the northwest of the town. If you can give us a house number and the father's name/occupation we might be able to link it to the right street through documents which include addresses: directories, burial records etc. 'C.B.' is, I assume, County Borough. The exact titles of administrative districts were often unwieldy, particularly when the upstart towns took on powers previously belonging to counties. I don't think it's important. Thank you Hugh. Yes, the name is Edgar John REYNOLDS and the number of the house was 47. I don't know how long they were in the area - his father was John William REYNOLDS born 2Q 1887 in Rotherham (waiting for certificate...might be a month!) but died in Birmingham. John William's father was John Charles REYNOLDS born Masborough 1856 married to Elizabeth FOX born 1854 Masborough he was a Closet Service Box Fitter...ie fitted loos!!. Back another generation we come to William REYNOLDS c.1832 at Dalton. He was a Spade Finisher and later on in life, a labourer on roads. Thank you. That address is not listed in 1911 or 1919 directories. There are volumes closer to the right date in Sheffield Local Studies Library (and presumably in Rotherham) so it may be possible to make progress later.
