Hi list, I have so far been unable to find John Albert DICKINSON (a.k.a. Albert) born 30 June, 1875 Sheffield in the 1901 census. Thanks to the wonderful Sheffield indexers I have found a John Albert Dickinson of 38 Lofthouse Road enrolling two girls into Marlcliffe Road Junior and Infants Council School, Wadsley in 1909 and 1914. I was hoping to find Lofthouse Road on the census to see if this was my John Albert but I have had no luck. This is assuming of course that he was there in 1901. I would be most grateful for advice. From what I have found Wadsley may have been absorbed into Sheffield but I'm not sure. I can't find it in any case. Many thanks. Nancy Watson Sydney, Australia
Hi Nancy, My Grandfather George Wilson was living at 29 Lofthouse Rd, Owlerton when he married in 1905. He was a lodger there. Once married he moved round the corner to Bastock Road which is still there. I will send you a copy of a map with Lofthouse Rd on it if you would like it. On a current map look for Beulah Rd. Lofthouse Road is no longer there it is now part of the Hillsborough Leisure Center that was built on the site. Lofthouse Rd bordered "Bassett's" of Liquorice Allsorts fame. Lofthouse Road appears to be in the midst of a building programme in 1901 - most of the houses are unoccupied, including number 38. The reference is piece 4342 folio 7 page 5. Hi Nancy There is a John A Dickinson living at 38 Lofthouse Rd on the 1911 census. He is 31, a spring knife cutler, married to Florance for 16 years and has 4 children, Frank b.1898, Arnold b. 1901, Florance H (Hilda?) b. 1903 and Lilion b. 1908. On the 1901 census this couple are living at 1 court, 2 house, Kent Road Heeley, with the 2 oldest boys. Is this the family you are looking for? His age is a bit out. regards Janet www.researchingrelatives.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Watson" <nwatson4@matra.com.au> To: <eng-sheffield@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 07, 2010 8:29 AM Subject: [SHEFF] 38 Lofthouse Road > Hi list, > > I have so far been unable to find John Albert DICKINSON (a.k.a. Hi Janet Thank you. This is definitely the family of John Albert enrolling his two daughters at school. I've looked up the birth registrations for the two girls, Florence Hilda and Lilian which tally with birth dates given on the enrolments. I've also found and ordered a marriage certificate which fits in with their having been married for 16 years. John Albert's age is the only query but it is possible I suppose he married an older woman and increased his age for appearance's sake. I will know when the marriage certificate arrives. Many thanks again.
