    3. I’ve tried three times to get a message accepted by the list since the replies to my original post. Lets hope this works! Thanks to all who replied to my original message. In particular, John, I would be delighted to exchange info on the BOWER family but I dont have much to offer! My BOWER connection is Hannah BOWER who I have as born 1806 who married William GUITE about 1831. I've had Hannah and her family on the back burner for quite a few years due to other priorities so I'm not that certain about her father but I have him as being Thomas but i have his wife as beingElizabeth Kimsworth not Ann Cox. I did all this in 2000 so there was not all that much on-line info available. This info was from the IGI. I would not be all that surprised to find a different Thomas somewhere! Angela, thanks for the info on the West Riding Registry of deeds. I’ve had a quick (very quick!) look at the site but have not found a searchable index yet. I’m slightly concerned that the property I am interested in which is New Row on the corner of Penistone Road and Park Side Road might have belonged to one of the great estates such as the Norfolk estate and thus no deeds would be deposited, if I understood the info page on the Wakefield site correctly. I am trying to get more info on the three houses in New Row that were occupied by GUITEs in 1841. I havwe to find out if they were all related and where they came from. Pauline, you very kindly sent me a copy of your paper on Middlewood some years ago. I’m going to have a look at your website after I’ve written this. As to why the list has not been very active; it could be down to competition from the Sheffield Indexers site as you suggest Angela or maybe people are moving on from the hobby or maybe because a lot of people reply directly to the poster, rather than via the list. This could be a technical issue because it used to be possible to chose to reply on list as the list came through as sender of the email. That does not seem to happen now. best wishes for 2011, Peter researching LEE, GUITE SENIOR CLAY SPEIRS BOWERS

    3. Hi Pete, As a member of a Number of Rootsweb Mailing List and Three that I administer myself, I believe the reason the number of hits are down is because more information is available on line. I along with Tony Morton also administer "Sheffield Indexers" which allows you to do just that. That is precisely the reason for the site so you can search for yourself as many of us do not have access to Sheffield Archives and want to be able to do our own research. You mention New Row being at the corner of Parkside Road & Penistone Rd. On the 1841 census it states the Guites were living on New Row, Ecclesfield/Wadsley Hamlet. My question would be was that area of Penistone Rd classed as Wadsley Hamlet at that time?????? The reason I question it is that My paternal Grandparents (Smedley's) lived just round the corner facing Penistone Rd and along with a map I have from Sheffield archives dated 1850 revised 1900 and what I was always led to believe that area is called "Owlerton" Now to who owned the property. Maybe the Rates Books would help you to find out who the owners were. Not having spent much time looking at them 10 years ago I hope I am not leading you astray. Just a few thoughts that I hope help. By the way Pete if you click on reply all it will bring up the persons private e-mail address so you can still reply privately. Another annoying feature that I hate is the fact people who are not members say of Eng Sheffield but use Rootsweb Boards can post. Kindest regards.
