    1. [SHEFF] Place name to decipher
    2. June Chatterton
    3. Hi list I have received a marriage certificate today and I cant decipher residence address and wonder if anyone had any ideas. In 1854 at St Mary's Church Parish Church William Benson a brickmaker age 20 who was born in Nottingham married Sarah Booker age 18 from Sheffield. Sarah was living at Suffolk Road at the marriage. On the 1851 census William was living at Meadowhead, not far from Sarah who was born at Norton, so I am assuming William was still living in Sheffield at his marriage in 1854. The letters for his address look like Shg?ifield (I know it looks like Sheffield but I dont think it is as there is only one letter where what I think is 'g' is. I would appreciate any ideas. I am going to scan it into my computer so coud email it to anyone. Many thanks June Chatterton A Sheffielder for 57 years UK Tracing family names of BENSON/BENNISON, BRADFORD, FIELDSEND, GILLESPIE and variants, HAWLEY, KENN(E)Y, LEMONS & MITCHELL www.junechatterton@blueyonder.co.uk

    1. Re: [SHEFF] Woollen Lane - Thank you
    2. Hi all. Gave me quite a turn seeing WOOLLEN in a question which has been answered. My interest is because my wife's gt gt gt grandmother was one Elizabeth Woollen wife of William Smith of Dam House, Barrister etc. Elizabeth's father was Robert Woollen, originally of Derbyshire. He moved to Sheffield and held land at Gatefields - there are a number of streets in that area that are named after the Woollen family that have now disappeared. I am away from home at this time and could send you a copy of a "Gatefields" write up when I get home next week - I think I sent Hugh a copy some years ago. It comes as the final part of a writeup of the lifetime of the William Smith above. From memory I think the Woollen home became a pub when the Gatefields area was developed. Best regards to all. 3. hello June, Woollen Lane was in the area which was later the site of the Kelvin Flats, which have now also disappeared. It ran from Infirmary Road, opposite Barrack Lane, winding its way more or less southward to the junction of Cleveland St and Daniel Hill. 3. Hi June, My Street Directory says that Woollen Lane ran from Daniel Hill to 229 Infirmary Rd Sheffield 6. The Alan Godfrey maps should show it in all it's glory. LOL. It's right on the join between two maps. Yorkshire sheet 294.03 covers Neepsend, Owlerton & Lower Walkley Sheet 294.07 covers Sheffield West. I buy direct but I am sure Sheffield Scene & Blackwell's have them in Sheffield.
