    1. [SHEFF] Sumounting Brick walls Barnsley Family
    2. Pauline Bell
    3. Hello List I know a lot of you have a lot of experience of surmounting brickwalls in FH research and I wondered if anyone had any ideas of where to look for a marriage of a George Barnsley to Ann around 1798-1800. I am researching the history of the firm of George Barnsley and Sons who were toolmakers based in Cornish Steet. Sheffield. Barnsleys were cutlers in the locality back to at least the 1500s and a George Barnsley was Master Cutler in 1650 and in 1883. It is the grandparents' marriage of the 1883 GB that I have been unable to find over several years of searching. We have tried Familysearch, all parish records of churches functioning at the time in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. We have tried spelling variations. My 2 x greatgrandfather, Charles was bapitsed at St Peters in 1802 as was his brother George in 1810. No other siblings are recorded in between though there was another George born to parents of same name baptised in 18 01. He died and therefore the son born 1810 was given his father's name, George. I have reams of info about apprenticeships, marriages and deaths but nothing fits together to give any clear to where the marriage was and there fore to give a name for the father of George, husband of Ann. George (b. 1810) and his wife Elizabeth and Charles (b!802) and his wife also Elizabeth and second wife Hannah lived in Allen Street Any ideas of where to look next?? All suggestions greatly received. Best wishes Pauline Bell Southwell, Notts Researching: Bailey,Barnsley, Barber, Bell, Cooper, Froggatt, Leclere, Shaw

    3. Hi Dave, I have found a Benjamin Marsden who was 31 in the 1851 census, (so born about 1820) living in Upper Heeley. He was born in Sheffield and working as a Grinder. I wonder if he was a brother to your Thomas Marsden? Benjamin named a son Thomas, but that's hardly conclusive evidence. Both are buried at Heeley Christ Church - Benjamin in 1859 at the age of 41 and two sons, Thomas and Herbert, in 1861. They lived at Warburton's Yard, London Road. Do you have access to any information that might indicate whether Thomas had siblings? Happy new year! He was the son of George and Maria (formerly RODGER, a widow when they married). Thomas was a Razorsmith. His father George was a Silversmith/Scissorsmith. Thomas married Priscilla COGGIN 13 Aug 1838 in the Sheffield Parish Church. Priscilla died 5 Sep 1850. Subsequently, Thomas married Elizabeth HAZLEWOOD in 1868 at St Jude, Eldon, Sheffield. Prior to Priscilla's death (well, it hardly could be afterwards!) they had 3 children: William (possible birth registration Sep 1/4 1838 Ecclesall Bierlow) Elizabeth (born 16 Oct 1841) Mary (possible birth registration Mar 1/4 1848 Ecclesall Bierlow) If anyone out there is connected to either William or Mary, I'd love to hear from you. In exchange, I can provide a lot of information about Elizabeth and her descendancy. And even if not, Happy New Year to the rest of you! Dave in frigid northern Illinois

    1. [SHEFF] YKS SURNAMES LIST UPDATES
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear all, I had hoped to be able to post a last update of the YKS Surnames List for 2009 or at least to start 2010 with a bang. Unfortunately, bang it was, in the form of a sudden, unexpected thunderstorm with two hits, one after the other, very, very close to my house last week. You guessed it! Goodbye modem and Broadband connection. My son kindly lent me his dongle connection, but it is far too weak for me to use to update the list online. To make matters worse, my computer guru is on holiday until Tuesday and I am off to Rome, on work, on Wednesday, so I will be unable to update the list before the 12th of this month. Many thanks to all you have send me corrections and/or submissions for their patience. Keep on sending them, they are safely kept until I can get to them. Well, that was one way to send 2009 on its way! In meantime, I would like to wish everyone my very best for the New Year and a 2010 full of love, health, wealth and much happiness. 3. Hello Judy, You may remember that we had some correspondence about this grave a few years ago. Gwendoline Marguerite is buried in grave G1131 with her parents. I was of the opinion that there was no gravestone on this grave, but that area has not yet been thoroughly surveyed so I could be wrong - I remember that you thought there had been a memorial. I will have a closer look at the area in the new year. Meanwhile I will be away from tomorrow until Monday. William Greatorex (Head)age 42 occ: Publican born Nottinghamshire, England Ann Greatorex age 41 occ none, born Yorkshire George Greatorex age 15 occ, Scholar William Christopher age 12 occ, Scholar John Henry age 9 occ, Scholar Florence Ann age 1 However, I am trying to find them again on Ancestry.co.uk so as to attach them to my family tree on Ancestry. However for the life of me I cannot find them and unlike FreeBmd you cannot put the source information in to help your search. I've tried every which way including going thru the Ecclesall Bierlow districts with no luck though I note that District 7 is not available on Ancestry. Knowing my luck, what I am looking for will be in that district. I've also tried many variations/corruptions of the name but still with no luck. Can anyone help?
