    1. [SHEFF] Birthplace lookup
    2. Frank Turner
    3. Many thanks to all who contributed to my quest for information regarding the origins of Kate Green. It would appear that after 1861 she is consistently born in Sheffield and in 1855. The only source out of step would appear to be the 1861 census which puts her date of birth at 1850 in Ireland, all other sources suggesting 1855 in Sheffield. .If that is an error then the migration would be sometime between 1851 and 1855 since the family do not appear on the 1851 census. Once again many thanks for the rapid response. What a brilliant site this is. Cheers Frank No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. There are some of the older buildings still on Queen Street at Swinton - there's also some new houses there. Queen Street school which has just had its centenary though is about to be pulled down! A new school is being built on the premises. 1. [SHEFF] City Road Cemetery - child burials
    2. June Vasey
    3. Hello I have found burial records of a close relative of my husband - Judith Maureen Vasey who died aged 2 weeks in 1938. She is buried at the City Road Cemetery in consecrated ground Grave no 7641 section U. When I click on the details for other people buried in the grave on the Sheffield Indexers website 58 other people come up all with the same grave number and section. 56 were children who died very young or were still born and 2 were adults in their 70s. It seems that the grave number in section U was some sort of mass grave for children. My question is - will there be individual head stones for each baby or is there perhaps a marker indicating that many babies were buried there without naming them individually? Can anyone tell me more please? Many thanks June in Edinburgh

    3. Hi June, The person to ask the question to is Tony Morton who has photographed all the plots in City Rd and a few other Cemeteries. I believe you will find that it is a common grave which covered quite a large area. I am more or less sure there will be no marker and what we have on the site is all the information there is. We have a Message Forum on the site where you can post your message, Tony will see it and let you know what is there. 3. Hi everyone, Here is the latest update of the YKS Surnames List database. I am afraid that I have had to delete an awful lot of surname submissions because the accompanying email addresses bounced. If your surnames are the ones that I deleted, I am afraid that you will have to resubmit each and every one. Please, remember to inform me whenever you change your email address. Send me both your old and your new address, in the body of the text, and I'll do the rest. I don't need a list of surnames as my search is based on the email address. One submitter whose surnames I deleted had an email that was unaccessible for more than one month, without changing. Many thanks to my email police! 1. [SHEFF] Names of interest from the Sheffield area.
    2. Alan Jeffery
    3. Hi All As has been the norm lately just thought I would throw a few names into the ring to see if they hit any bells. I will wait with baited breath. Surnames:- Jeffery descendants of Charles Jeffery born WoodDitton Cambs in 1856, and also Shepherd, Cawthorne, Woodliff, Young, Holgate, Bertram, Simpson and Crawshaw to name a few. Still chasing the descendants of one George Jeffery born 1880 and Jane Lillian Jeffery his wife and their 13 children. in the 1920s they lived at 40 third Avenue, Munition huts, Tinsley. One of their children Charles Henry Jeffery was with them at this time. Also the spelling of the surname seems to go from Jeffery to Jeffrey depending on the scribe of the day. Thanks to all who can help Alan Jeffery in warm but slightly damp Sunshine Coast, Queensland, OZ

    1. [SHEFF] Alice Holbrook Cooper
    2. carol cooper
    3. Although this is out of our area, I wonder if anyone has come across this lady? Alice Holbrook Cooper. After many years of researching, I finally found a sibling of my late father in law. We never knew that he had any relatives as he was brought up in a childrens home in Rotherham. I found that he had several siblings who died young, including a half sister named Alice Holbrook Cooper, born in Swinton. Unfortunately it was the registration of her death that I found in 1995, aged 89. She died in The Nook nursing home in Huddersfield.  I have written twice to the owner of the home, who was also the informant on the death certificate, to the address of the home and also to her home address, but she chooses not to reply to me. Both times I enclosed stamped addressed envelopes and a history and proof of who I was. All I wanted was a little information, if she had any, about the life of Alice.  I feel very disappointed that after 20 years of difficult research, it has come to a stop like this.  I wondered if Huddersfield social services would help me, although it probably comes under the  privacy laws, but if anyone has any experience of anything like this, I would welcome any advice. I wrote to the Huddersfield Examiner who printed my letter and I had one reply from a Holbrook but nothing further has come from this. Thanks, Carol Cooper
