George was born to Charles Jeffery (from Woodditton Cam) and Elizabeth Shepherd (born Blast Lane) in 1880. They had 13 children and in 1925 lived at Tinsley in the Munition Huts. Some of their children were Charles henry Jeffery who married a Fanny Cotton in Rotherham in 1927 and their offspring were Kenneth Jeffery born 1927, Kathleen Jeffery born 1929 and Pauline B Jeffery born 1931 Harold Jeffery who married Catherine Gorman in 1928 and their offspring were Thelma Jeffery born 1928 William Jeffery who married Ellen Picton in 1930/1 and offspring were William E Jeffery born 1931 and Pearl O Jeffery born 1933 Hilda Jeffery who married Arthur HUTTON in 1934 in Rotherham and offspring were Margaret Hutton born 1934, Frances Hutton born 1936 and Charles E hutton born 1941 Doris Jeffery who married Walter Scott in 1929 but I have no details of any issue at this time. Margery Jeffery who married George Newton in 1935 again no details of any issue. Also I am still trying to find out more about a Nellie Jeffery who became The Yorkshire Nightingale and had a stage name of Nellie Blye and at some point married a Connolly as I have a picture of her NHS card with Mrs Connolly on it and it was dates 1946. This information I got from the historical house in Charleville western Queensland (where my daughter and family lives). I will await some positive replies and maybe do some catching up later this year when I will in UK for a couple of months. I have recently received a couple of Death Certificates from the GRO which had typing errors on them, I am getting very frustrated by them especially now they have put the prices up. I think they have taken on temporary staff to catch up with the backlog. This Birth Certificate has taken over a month to reach me and I'm not convinced they have the right information there, please can someone advise. My concern is that it says: 1914 Birth in the Sub-district of N.W. Rotherham in the County of Rotherham C.B. My question is: Why should it say "County of Rotherham C.B."? Is this an error? Secondly, I see there are two Midland Roads - one Mexborough and the other Swinton One is S61 (Mexborough) and the other S64 (near Swinton railway station). How can I tell which one would be correct in 1914? Liz www.btinternet.com/~e.newbery OPC for Street, Somerset

Has anyone information on the two JAMES GOODISON's below; 20th FEB 1803 Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire, Parents William & Hannah 20th FEB 1803 Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Parents David & Mary Both Bapt' James. Fathers were recorded as Button Makers in the Parish Register. He called his 1st son James, 2nd William, & a daughter Hannah., but we have a brick wall in Sheffield Robert Freeman March Cambs
Hi Robert, Two observations...... Is there anything on the James marriage entry ( who married in London I presume) that mentions who his father is? Have you seen the actual entry.... If there were two James Goodison's born about the same time I would make trees up for both boys and see where it leads you. Up to 1846 there were very few C of E Churches in Sheffield. Making it easier to search. Did London James have his children baptised in the Anglican church? What was the first sons name? that could be a lead. When did James appear in London? Could he have gone there to learn how to make the musical instruments? Where is he in 1841? There are a large number of Goodisons in Sheffield which doesn't make it easy. I found on Eric Youles apprenticeship site........both William & David mentioned. http://youle.info/history/cutlers/p217.GIF I can't see a James for either William or David. Will see what else I can find. Hi All, I'm new to this list but wondered if anyone can possibly help me with this enquiry. I'm looking for James(Jarman) HAWKINS born Nottingham c 1830. In 1861 he is living Eccleshall Bierlow Yorks with his wife Sarah. He is a 31 year old tailor and he is on the census as Jarman HAWKINS.He was born Nottinghamshire. In 1871 he is living in Sheffield Yorks again with wife Sarah. He is a 41 year old Tailor born Nottinghamshire. On the census he is down as James HAWKINS. In 1855 in Sheffield he married Sarah Holmes and he is a tailor and his father also James HAWKINS, is a wood sawyer. Is anyone researching this family or can they suggest how I could find them on censuses other than 1861 and 1871. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Roy
Hi Roy, I found the following.. 1861 census Jarman Hawkins Piece 3472 page 17B. 1871 census James Hawkins Belfield St, RG 10/4681 On the '71 census they are in St Stephens Parish I am currently transcribing St Stephens baptisms but am only at 1861.You will need to check the database out to see if they are there. Hope this helps. Hi all. I would be grateful for advice regarding access to the above poll books. I have tried the Arts & Humanities Data Service site - ahds.ac.uk - but even after registering, access to this data was denied. Should someone have access the name I am interested in is DICKINSON. Many thanks. Nancy Watson Sydney Australia
Hi everyone, Yes, I know, it's been a month since the last update, but if on the one hand I've been horrendously busy, there has been little movement on the YKS list. There were a few changes to email addresses and submitters' information and, sadly, deletions for two submitters because their emails bounced: Debbie Little (4) little@ucalgary.ca Sandra Kelleher (7) kelleher@nex.net.au Two new surnames submissions to add to the database: WILKINSON, WORSNOP All the best to all, Magdalena ___________________________________________________ Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens List Administrator PLEASE NOTE: - For ALL* *communications regarding the YKS Surnames List, please address emails to: *ykssurnames@yahoo.com *NOT to the address from which this update is posted. Hello June. I would phone first as I believe there is a 100 year closure on any of the hospital records. We (S&DFHS) are just compiling an index for the archives of Wadsley Asylum, but we can only go as far as 1910. Does anyone in Sheffield know where the staff (nurses) graduation pictures went that were in the corridors of Lodge Moor Hospital in 1965 - 1967 or any of the names of the younger nurses? There used to be one called Janet (she was the staff nurse)who looked after the 2 guys in one of the wards. One was in a iron lung and the other taught math. His name was Brian. Hi list One of my mothers eldest sisters, Nellie WRIGHJTSON (nee LEMONS) died of TB meningitis aged just 25 in 1944. I did not have her death certificate but after reading the article in the latest Practical Family History magazine about Papworth Sanitorium treating TB patients, I decided to order the death certificate which tells me Nellie died at King Edward Hospital Sheffield. Looking at the NRA catalogue I see that Sheffield Archives have some papers on the hospital and so think I will pay a visit. I was wondering if anyone had consulted these papers and found them helpful in their research. Kind regards June Chatterton. Hello Lists Just a reminder. I'm still trying to generate interest and support for http://barcamp.org/Family-History-Camp-2010 If this is something you would be interested in attending, or if you know someone who would, please add your name to the wiki. (email address is optional, but I'll be able to keep you updated. Putting your name down does not commit you, I'm just trying to see if there is enough interest. Steve
