    1. [SHEFF] Brinsworths Orchards
    2. Dave Yates
    3. Hi Judy, I've just found this if it helps. Dave. >From “A Description of the Town of Sheffield” by Samuel Woolhouse (1832) FROM THE OLD CHURCH TO CROOKES MOOR. I have mentioned what an old, low, dirty Street Church Lane was. Proceeding up, there was Brinsworth Orchards {15} on your left (this Street was not all built at that time). On your right is now Vicar Lane but there was no St. James Street, no Vicar Lane, no St. James Church. These places was the Vicarage Crofts. The next Street up Church Lane was Solomon's Row (now Smith Street). This Street used to be called Bloody Row. The following circumstance gave it that name. One Solomon Smith and his son going to Chesterfield Races, a Gentleman's carriage happened to be coming from Chesterfield to the Race Common, a little on this side of Stone Gravels (my Father has shewn me the place very often). The son, then a boy, threw a Stone and frightened the Gentleman's horses. The Gentleman ordered his Footman to horsewhip the boy for so doing. The boy got over a wall and run across the fields, the Footman in pursuit after him. There happened to be in one of the fields some old Coal Pits. The Footman overtaking him began of horsewhipping him and drove him into one of these old Coal pits, so that the boy was killed upon the place. The Father had the case investigated into; The Footman was committed to prison to take his trial. The Gentle- man bargained with this Solomon Smith for so much money not to appear against the man at the Assizes, so by that means the man was acquitted. {15} Brinsworth's (or more probably Brelsforth's, for the name is found in all manner of spellings Orchards became Orchard Street www.friendsofburngreavecemetery.btck.co.uk "Life is tough, and if you have the ability to laugh at it, you have the ability to enjoy it." 1. [SHEFF] Brinsworth's Orchard
    2. Hi, I have been looking through an old Sheffield Directory for 1787 and found the address BRINSWORTH'S ORCHARD. Now I know that there is a Brinsworth in Rotherham but this one is definitely in Sheffield. If anybody has an old map of this period I would appreciate it if they could look for me. 1. [SHEFF] YKS SURNAMES LIST UPDATE July 19 2010
    2. Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens
    3. Dear Yorksgeners, especially those currently meeting in York! The heavy administrative workload that has sadly kept me from joining you again this year is responsible for this delayed update to the YKS Surnames List. Still, I am glad to add 9 surname submissions and I sincerely hope that all your hard work will prove very, very fruitful and provide me with a whole lot of new submissions, changes, updatings, etc. As I read Janice's latest posting listing the many places you will be visiting, I turned green with envy. How I wish I were there with you, although I'm not quite sure I would enjoy the wet weather you are apparently having. Right now, genealogy is almost the furthest thing from my mind, but I have definitely not given up! Here are the new submissions: ABBA BARR CORNISH DRAX EALHAM GREENWOOD LAWRENCE MOLLOY TOPHAM With my very, very best regards to all, Magdalena ___________________________________________________ Magdalena Gorrell Guimaraens List Administrator YKS SURNAMES LIST database PLEASE NOTE: - For *all *communications regarding the YKS Surnames List, please address emails to: *ykssurnames@yahoo.com not* to the address from which this update is posted. However, I intend to grit my teeth and watch because his tory ounds very interesting from what I've read about it in the papers, and there as lready been considerable coverage (a major feature in today's Daily Mail eekend agazine). His great-grandfather JOSEPH FORSYTH JOHNSON (the 82-year-old entertainer's eal name is Bruce Joseph Forsyth Johnson) was born at Sheffield in 1839 according o the 1861 census but I can't find a birth record) and married ELIZABETH ROWSDALE at Helmsley registration district in the March quarter of 1861 FreeBMD, 9d 549). They are found as man and wife in 1861, living with lizabeth's arents, John and Alice Trowsdale, at Gilling - and this was clearly Gilling ast in the yedale district, between York and Helmsley, since the entry is for Helmsley egistration district. The reference is RG9, piece 3638 folio 42 page 14. There s also Gilling West but that is farther to the west, near Richmond. Elizabeth was eight years older than her husband, she being 30 and he 22. They ventually had six children. Joseph Forsyth Johnson was a gardener who became quite an eminent landscape rchitect. He was curator of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Belfast, for a number of years, ran a horticultural shop in Bond Street, London, and then went to America where he became much in demand for designing gardens and parks. However, in his rivate life he was a bit of a rogue and left Elizabeth and their children some ime in he 1880s and shacked up with a woman called Frances Clarke, who apparently also worked in Bond Street in a draper's shop. They had three children together, ossibly orn in America. Though Bruce Forsyth is quoted as saying his great-grandfather as lmost certainly a bigamist, I can find no marriage and the Wikipedia entry for oseph orsyth Johnson says he never married Frances. The programme reveals that Johnson abandoned Frances and their children as well nd was reported to have died, there being an obituary in a newspaper. But assenger ists revealed he was still travelling backwards and forwards between England nd merica up to 1903. He died in penury in New York in 1906 and is buried in an nmarked grave in a Brooklyn cemetery. Forsyth says he is now going to erect a eadstone for his ancestor. - oy Stockdill enealogical researcher, writer & lecturer ewbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, nd that is not being talked about." 3. Hi all, My GUITE relatives lived at Birley Carr and Wadsley Bridge untill the 1960s and were regular attendees at the Birley Carr Methodist Chapel. I am trying to flesh out my knowledge of them and their lives so I would be very interested to hear from any listers who also have connections there. A cousin has just sent me a photocopy of a group photo of the youth group or perhaps Sunday school of the chapel from the early 1900s with a list of the subjects. They are: Bert JENNINGS Cyril GUITE Bob RANDALL Rhoda MATTHEWS Albert JACKSON Annie STEELE Fred ARMITAGE Billie FLEMMING Fred BUCKLEY Charley STOCKS Bert STOCKS Dick LLOYD Frances HAWLEY Agnes MAYES Kitty FLEMMING Mrs MURFIN (the youth leader) Renee ALLOK (?) Hannah MAYES Eveline GUITE Mabel HAWLEY Charley COCKER Fred FLINDERS Billie WILSON Alf SMITH Billie GODBER The age of the group appears to be late teens to very early 20s. One of the girls married in March quarter 1912 so I put the photo as about 1911. If anybody has these names in their tree please contact me. I might be able to arrange for the original to be scanned. 1. Re: [SHEFF] Birley Carr
    2. Peter, I forwarded this E-mail to a distant cousin who is interested in Birley Carr, Wadsley Bridge. His great grandmother was Sarah Whiteley who married Henry Knutton in Sheffield. Henry passed away and then she married Joseph Chambers. They are on the 1901 census (Sheffield), but no specific address is shown. On the 1911 Census, Sarah Chambers is widowed, living with her granddaughter, Beatrice Littlehales, age 15, (who is my cousin Fred's mother). Their address is 202 Foxhill Road, Wadsley Bridge. Fred's mom was born in the US, but was sent back to England at an early age when her own mother died. She came back to the US in 1912, probably when her grandmother died. Fred is very interested in Birley Carr, Wadsley Bridge. He's my 2nd cousin twice removed and I met him while doing genealogy research. Good luck.....Terry message dated 7/16/2010 12:18:25 P.M. 1. [SHEFF] Death of a Nun, Ellen Hawksworth
    2. Catherine Atkin
    3. Hello everyone, its a while since I have been in touch, but I have a general question that my brother & I are pondering over at the moment. My Dad had an aunt Ellen Hawksworth born 4th April 1894, in Sheffield, and we are trying to trace her death. She went to be a nun at what we believe to be the Carmalite convent at Bradfield and took the name Sister Mary Barbara. My brother has been in touch with the convent and the records show that she went from there to Mansfield & then on to Norfolk. As she sent my parents a "holy picture" by way of a greeting when they married in December 1951 we are looking for a death sometime after this time. Does anyone know if her death would have been registered under her "real name" or religious name (what is the protocol?) Her parents and some of her siblings were buried at City Road with gravestones still intact that my brother has photographed, but she isn't close by. Any hints or tips would be gratefully received regards Catherine Atkin nee Hawksworth

    3. Hi Liz, Nothing is showing up on FreeBMD for that pairing. Would you mind telling us what information you have that she did indeed marry either of these chaps please? Whiston being close to Rotherham have you been through their parish registers? Their are certainly a number of Ann's or Hannah's from there that would fit the bill except they do not look to marry a Ward or Wingfield. The Ann's seem to come from Rotherham and Hannah's from Sheffield.
