The major work is the installation of a new ventilation system (they are probably calling it 'climate control' or something equally technologically impressive). They are also taking the opportunity to upgrade the cataloguing system. A significant proportion of the lengthy closure is for physically removing all the records, stock-taking as they go, and bringing them back afterwards. hello Judy, I am not certain what you mean by a mark-up but if it's an online copy of the section plan you are looking for, there is this one: http://sheffieldindexers.com/images/CityRoadCemetery_t.JPG You can also find it on the Sheffield Council site, in the Bereavement Services webpages. It is also possible to get plans showing the individual plots by asking Bereavement Services at their City Road main office, or from the Archives - but I don't know if they will be amongst the 'finding-aids' moving to the Local Studies Library when the Archives closes at the end of next week. Just to let you all know that Lancashire libraries have the newspaper collection available on-line. You can apply to join one of their libraries on-line and you do not have to live in the local area. regards Catherine Atkin Leicestershire
Hello Any one have any pointers on 19th century music hall in Sheffield? My Gt Grandfather Thomas Marshall began his career as an actor/comedian in Sheffield. Thanks Lee
Many thanks John. I should maybe have explained in my posting, that this is just a sideline of research that I picked up, for an old lady who uses the housebound library service. (I work for Sheffield Mobile Libraries). She's descended from Elizabeth Swann, and asked if I could find out anything about that side of her family. I'm personally a bit pushed for time at the moment, because of work commitments, and I was hoping someone on the list had already done some work on Dykes Hall. There's usually a wealth of knowledge on the list. :-) Thanks again. regards Richard john readman wrote: > Hi Richard, > > Have you looked in the local newspapers? Hi Richard, Have you looked in the local newspapers? There is a collection of local newspapers which I use for the Sheffield area. They are part of a large collection of around 75 local newspapers spread as far north as Aberdeen and as far south as Exeter, but more importantly includes Sheffield and Rotherham. If you live in the Yorkshire area and have a library ticket you can get the resource through your local library online. If you live elsewhere in the UK then its worth checking whether your local library has the resource available. In all cases you don 't have to live in an area to join it, you just need the to go to the library's online resource and join it.You need the ticket number to get the onto the database. They will ask for your name and address, so they can send you a ticket plus the password to get on to the site. I have looked in the resource just now and found that William Swann sold a residence in 1841, complete with all the furniture and animals. He died aged 93, at Wadsley: BMD announcement in local newspaper. *T**he Sheffield & Rotherham Independent* Friday, March 31, 1849; pg. 5; Issue 1519.* 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II* * * *On the 26th inst, at his residence Dykes hall, Wadsley, in his 93rd year of his age, William Swann, gentleman.* * * * * regards John
Hi, I've just started looking for some information on the SWANN family of Dykes Hall for a friend. I understand that Elizabeth SWANN who married John Fowler of Wadsley Hall in 1815, was a daughter of William Swann of Dykes Hall. She appears to have been christened at Sheffield parish church in 1792. There is quite a lot of info on John Fowler on the net, but not on his wife or her family. At least, not that I've found so far. If anyone can give me any pointers, I'd be most grateful. regards Richard Tetley

My Gt Grandfather Thomas Marshall began his career as an actor/comedian in Sheffield. Hi There were several Music Halls in Sheffield and the one that lasted the longest was the Empire. There was also one on Division Street near Barkers Pool which I think was called the 'Albert' or 'Prince Albert'. Have a look at this URL _http://www.theatrestrust.org.uk/resources/theatres/show/530-albert-hall-sheffield_ (http://www.theatrestrust.org.uk/resources/theatres/show/530-albert-hall-sheffield) . There was the Surrey St. Music Hall which you will find on _http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/SheffieldTheatres.htm#surrey_ (http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/SheffieldTheatres.htm#surrey) This site will give you several contacts by E-mail which could prove useful. They may have got some useful posters with your relatives name on. Try this theatre _http://www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/SheffieldTheatres.htm#royal_ (http://www.art hurlloyd.co.uk/SheffieldTheatres.htm#royal) This one in Attercliffe was n noted for its naughty ladies' poses as well. I am not sure about the others but have you tried googleing to see. Hope this helpful to you. I've not been very active during the summer - too much to do outside! As the family history season comes round here are my interests and current projects; Names ; LEE, GUITE, GYTE GUYTE, SENIOR, HAIG SPEIRS CLAY BOWER Places; Birley Carr, Middlewood Forge Organisations: Dilys GUITE Players and Lantern Theatre, Philadelphia Works, Nichols & Co. in Shalesmoor. I have traced my LEE and GUITE ancestors back to the beginning of the 19th century in Sheffield, the CLAYS to Cromford , Derbyshire and the Speirs to Glasgow. Now I am trying to fill in details about their lives. I have collected quite a lot of genealogical data on the GUITES and the GYTES in the Sheffield area so if anybody is starting up on these names, I could possibly help. best wishes from France, Peter Lee
Firstly why my interest. Young Mitchell's second wife was Mary Elizabeth Smith, a daughter of William Smith of Dam House and as such she is a gt gt gt aunt of my wife. I have just copied out Young Mitchell's probate record and it states he is:- "late of Sheffield and died 2 May 1865 at Wye House, Boxton, Derbyshire" Can anyone help me with what function Wye House performed - a hospice perhaps. His will was proved 23 May 1865 at Wakefield by:- "Mary Elizabeth Mitchell of Priory Villas, Sharrow Lane, Sheffield, widow, relict and sole executor." Would Priory Villas be church organized or what? Any help would be much appreciated. Incidentally Young Mitchell's occupation is stated as Artist and his estate is "under 3,000 pounds" not bad for an artist and teacher.Mary Elizabeth died in 1904 - she outlived her husband by some 39 years. They were married for 11 years. John Elmes in Sunny S E Queensland
I have endeavoured to answer some of John's queries about Wye House, Buxton in the 1860's, and also about his relative of the Sheffield School of Art. Mr. William Smith of dam House died in October 1864, around October 4th, because the funeral was reported in the local newspaper with Mr. and Mrs. Young Mitchell attending. *The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent* (Sheffield, England), Saturday, October 08, 1864; pg. 10; Issue 3120.* 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.* * * *There is an obituary for Mr. Smith in the above newspaper report as well.* * * *John Readman* * * * *
