    3. Hi Pete, As a member of a Number of Rootsweb Mailing List and Three that I administer myself, I believe the reason the number of hits are down is because more information is available on line. I along with Tony Morton also administer "Sheffield Indexers" which allows you to do just that. That is precisely the reason for the site so you can search for yourself as many of us do not have access to Sheffield Archives and want to be able to do our own research. You mention New Row being at the corner of Parkside Road & Penistone Rd. On the 1841 census it states the Guites were living on New Row, Ecclesfield/Wadsley Hamlet. My question would be was that area of Penistone Rd classed as Wadsley Hamlet at that time?????? The reason I question it is that My paternal Grandparents (Smedley's) lived just round the corner facing Penistone Rd and along with a map I have from Sheffield archives dated 1850 revised 1900 and what I was always led to believe that area is called "Owlerton" Now to who owned the property. Maybe the Rates Books would help you to find out who the owners were. Not having spent much time looking at them 10 years ago I hope I am not leading you astray. Just a few thoughts that I hope help. By the way Pete if you click on reply all it will bring up the persons private e-mail address so you can still reply privately. Another annoying feature that I hate is the fact people who are not members say of Eng Sheffield but use Rootsweb Boards can post. Kindest regards. Elaine in Ottawa Sheffield Indexers http://www.sheffieldindexers.com -----Original Message----- From: Peter Lee Sent: Monday, January 03, 2011 5:28 AM To: eng-sheffield@rootsweb.com Subject: [SHEFF] re Sheffield Archives etc. I’ve tried three times to get a message accepted by the list since the replies to my original post. Lets hope this works! Thanks to all who replied to my original message. In particular, John, I would be delighted to exchange info on the BOWER family but I dont have much to offer! My BOWER connection is Hannah BOWER who I have as born 1806 who married William GUITE about 1831. I've had Hannah and her family on the back burner for quite a few years due to other priorities so I'm not that certain about her father but I have him as being Thomas but i have his wife as beingElizabeth Kimsworth not Ann Cox. I did all this in 2000 so there was not all that much on-line info available. This info was from the IGI. I would not be all that surprised to find a different Thomas somewhere! Angela, thanks for the info on the West Riding Registry of deeds. I’ve had a quick (very quick!) look at the site but have not found a searchable index yet. I’m slightly concerned that the property I am interested in which is New Row on the corner of Penistone Road and Park Side Road might have belonged to one of the great estates such as the Norfolk estate and thus no deeds would be deposited, if I understood the info page on the Wakefield site correctly. I am trying to get more info on the three houses in New Row that were occupied by GUITEs in 1841. I havwe to find out if they were all related and where they came from. Pauline, you very kindly sent me a copy of your paper on Middlewood some years ago. I’m going to have a look at your website after I’ve written this. As to why the list has not been very active; it could be down to competition from the Sheffield Indexers site as you suggest Angela or maybe people are moving on from the hobby or maybe because a lot of people reply directly to the poster, rather than via the list. This could be a technical issue because it used to be possible to chose to reply on list as the list came through as sender of the email. That does not seem to happen now. best wishes for 2011, Peter researching LEE, GUITE SENIOR CLAY SPEIRS BOWERS ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-SHEFFIELD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message No virus found in this incoming message. 3. Hi, I remember seeing that the Archives are closed for refurbishment but that a limited service is available in the local studies library. Does anybody know whether this includes access to the sort of record that might include details of who owned properties in the Penistone road area at the beginning of the nineteenth century? The list seems very inactive these days in stark contrast to the Derbyshire list that I also subscribe to so I am taking the opportunity to restate my Sheffield interests and to wish everybody a very happy 2011. Maw, of Sheffield. The Brightholmlee Wesleyan school with 120 children and 14 teachers, and the Oughtibridge Wesleyan School, attended the Wesleyan Chapel. During the afternoon, the children and teachers, together with the class of 52 young men of Wesleyan Reform School, assembled in the schoolroom and had tea. Mr. Cooper?s band and friends from Watery street Reform Chapel also joined them, and the gathering was a very enjoyable one.*

    3. Hi Fran Stewart, I have no connection I'm afraid with Benjamin Mount, but I have found these articles in a Sheffield newspaper-the source is given, about a Benjamin Mount of Worrall. Looking at the map, Bradfield and Worrall are adjacent to one another, and Oughtibridge is close to them both. On A*****y I see that this Benjamin was a spring knife manufacturer with a wife called Mary and in 1861 a son called Archer Benjamin. So the first named article must have been his father, or maybe grandfather, as on A*****y he is shown as being born around 1763. I take it that you are looking for persons following the same family as opposed to census images and the like. It would appear that your Benjamin was a musician as well. *The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent** Saturday, May 08, 1847; pg. 5; Issue 1422.** **19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.** ** * *Deaths: **On Sunday inst., at Worrall, in the 84th year of his age, Mr. Benjamin Mount.* * * * * *The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent** , Saturday, October 16, 1869; pg. 12; Issue 5074.** **19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.* * * *Deaths: **On October 12th., Benjamin Mount, Spring Knife cutlet, Worrall, aged 56* * * *The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent** Wednesday, July 20, 1870; pg. 3; Issue 5318.** **19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.** ** * *Deaths: **Mount-July 18, Archer Benjamin, son of the late Mr. Benjamin Mount, of Worrall, aged 15.* * * * * *The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent** , Tuesday, May 22, 1888; pg. 3; Issue 10516.** **19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II.** *** *OUGHTIBRIDGE UNION* * * *The four schools forming this union assembled in their respective classrooms, and the children and teachers had an early breakfast, after which they walked in procession, met in the centre of the village, and sang special hymns, under the leadership of **Mr. Benjamin Mount**; and from thence the Zion Independent School, with 100 scholars and 18 teachers, and the Wesleyan Reform school, with 70 children and 12 teachers, went to the Wesleyan Reform Chapel, where the service was conducted by Mr. W. 3. Hi Dave again, Thomas Millington; did he marry Miss Mary Ann Hanson at Rotherham-there is an announcement in the newspaper for this marriage on May 15, 1847, though the advert gives the date as "lately" which isn't really helpful. The occupation of Thomas Millington was a saw maker. However, that same Thomas Millington, saw maker, earlier in August 1846, was before the mayor of Sheffield, charged by his brother (doesn't say whom) for trying to hang himself, whilst drunk! The report sates that Thomas was in receipt of some money from a property, and was spending it on drink, to such an extant that he had been in the lock up for drunkeness and violent conduct before towards his parents and had even been committed to Wakefield jail on one occasion. The mayor ordered him to be remanded in custody-probably for his own safety as none of his friends or family were present. It appears that this Thomas Millington had a brother called James, who in 1849, charged his brother Thomas with theft! By 1854, Thomas Millington was 31, still a saw maker, and was in trouble again for theft, stealing chairs from two pubs, the Black Swan at Snighill and the Waterloo Turf Tavern-he was sentenced to twelve months. (if this Thomas is yours then at least you know which pubs he frequented!) John
