List related reminders / suggestions LIST MESSAGES Would subscribers please include a small "text content reminder" (portion of text from the message content to which they are responding) to their messages. Doing so helps remind other subscribers which thread your message is related to. Please DO NOT rely on the "Subject line" text to act as a reminder to the message thread, as the same "Subject line" text is often used for different message threads. Also its usual for list subscribers to empty their list message folder regularly and are therefore without the short reminder text, unable to remember the thread without having to access and search through the list archives. After all, it does only take a couple of seconds to copy a sentence or two from the original message and paste it into your response message. Please remember to always add your place of residence (ie. City or County or Country, etc) along with your name at the end of each list posting. Knowing whether or not you reside in or are local to Sheffield has a significance on any advice offered by fellow subscribers willing to respnd to your query. Adding your signature also makes for a much more friendler message. Typing your research "SURNAMEs" in capital letters (UPPERCASE) in your messages makes it "kinder to the eye" and really does make for easier browsing of the message. ------------------------------------------------- ENG-SHEFFIELD mailing list has its own website "Sheffield Genealogy Family & Social History" (click on the url address at the end of this message). Hello to all again, I have a marriage at St Phillip Sheffield 25/12/1856 and wonder if anyone has access to 1851 or 1861 census information which may include these people - Richard Raven, of full age, bachelor, hairdresser of Oxford Street. Father - Robert Raven, Bricklayer. Ann Atkins, of full age, spinster of Freedom Road, Father - John Atkins, Cutler. Other Information - They had children Richard Atkins (born 1858) and Edwin (born 1860/1) Richard Raven born c1833, Ann Atkins born c1834. Ann had a sister Ellen (married St Phillip 1857 where she gave her address as Freedom Hill, Walkeley) I would love any information to help solve this brick wall ... Thankyou Christine Perth, W Australia
Hello, I wonder if anyone can help find any of these family members in the 1851 Census. Marriage at St Phillip, Sheffield 24th May 1850 James Bradshaw, 22, bachelor, manager in a Razor Manufactory, of 121 Fitzwilliam Street, Ecclesall Bierlow. His father was Samuel Bradshaw, Razor Smith. Helen Farnsworth, 20, spinster, of Scotland Street, Sheffield. Here father was Charles Clement Farnsworth, Silver Plater. Marriage in the Catholic Chapel, witnesses Albert Farnsworth and Ann Farnsworth. If anyone has access to records for the 1851 or 1861 census that may show any of these people, I would really appreciate details. I know that Charles Clement Farnsworth was married to Isabella (Hubberstey), and other children were Isabella, Charles Clement, John Clement, Alice and Agnes. I think he died in 1857. Thankyou Christine Perth, Western Australia

hello Simon Welcome to the list! Since we are talking about two prominent Sheffield families, there may be pedigrees in Sheffield Archives which would shed light on this. This list works particularly well when considering specific questions. So if you can tell us about some 'unknowns' at the margins of what is known we can ferret away at them :-) for those who don't know about JA Roebuck, take a look at (for example) http://www.imagesonline.bl.uk/britishlibrary/controller/subjectidsearch?id=11144 Roebuck Road is just over the hill from where I live. Hugh in Sheffield ps It's a good idea to tell us where you are in the world - we may need to take that into account when suggesting sources of information. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Simon Robinson" <srimages@fsmail.net> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 05, 2005 11:16 AM Subject: [SHEFF] Roebuck - Jessop > Hi Folks > Simon here. Hi Folks Simon here. My grandfather, Bernard Henry Jessop Wilson, started combing through many documents to start off our family tree. My mother and now me are carrying on. I am looking for as much information as possible about the Roebucks (from JA Roebuck fame) to the Jessop family (Jessop Hospital for Women). Any information would of course be greatly appreciated. My Grandfather had a strong suspicion that the Jessops and the Roebucks were linked together sometime through marriage. Look forward to hearing from someone. Bradshaw James razor manufacturer, 132 Fitzwilliam street (no entry for Samuel) Farnsworth Charles Clement, victualler, Fortune of War, 102 Scotland street so he seems to have changed from Silver Plater to innkeeper. I didn't check but Christine, and anyone else with ancestors in Sheffield in 1864, should check names against the Sheffield Flood Claims site. <http://extra.shu.ac.uk/sfca> -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Before they closed down, Ellis Son and Parramore [1980s] had a shop on the other side of the road to the Hallamshire Hospital but a bit lower down Glossop Road. This was opened to cater for people visiting the hospital who needed appliances like splints, trusses and other medical aids. The Boundary stone between Nether Hallam and Upper Hallam was in Glossop Road just above the University Union building. It was just outside my dentist's and whenever I went there as a child, I used to notice this little triangular stone by the gate and wonder what it meant. Hi everyone Back in 1980 I knew someone who used to work at a firm called Ellis, Son & Paramour. They used to deal in medical equipment and supplies. I think they used to be in Glossop Road - somewhere near the Hallamshire Hospital in Broomhill. I know the firm no longer exists and hasn't done so for a good number of years. Can anyone fill me in with the exact address and when the firm closed or what happened to it? Regards Patrick Bournemouth
Hello, for all those with access to Ancestry.com you may be interested to note that they have now added all the Yorkshire census records for 1901. So, no more expensive viewing of the wrong records on the main UK 1901 site. If only my Ancestry account hadn't become mysteriously locked, I wonder how long that will take to sort out? Is there some truth in the family rumour that these two were in trouble of some kind and were both shipped off? And how can I find out? Hi I am sure that there may be some trouble but that happens in many families. But the other son may not have been well enough to leave home. He may have been his parents golden child or a constant help to another sick relative. You do not say whether he had any employment but perhaps the other two sons were made redundant and found that by moving they got a better or another job. Are you sure they weren't chasing some girls who they later married or not, as the case may be. I do not think that you could look this problem up anywhere but I may be wrong. Hello listers I have recently begun to exchange family history with a very, very distant relative of mine. As a consequence I have information relating to the surnames STOKES and MOSS, both Sheffield families, who from memory have received very little or no coverage on this site. Charles MOSS and his wife Sarah, had 2 daughters Laura and Mary and 2 sons Walter and Albert. In 1881 the family were at 113 Heeley Green, Sheffield. Albert married my maternal grandmothers sister, Charlotte Ann Dale. George STOKES b 1805 in Sheffield, had a son William who married Mary Ann Goodwin in 1844 in Sheffield. William and Mary had a son, William, who married Ann WATSON in 1871 at St John's, Park in Sheffield. William and Ann's son, George, married my Mom's cousin, Beatrice May MOSS Anyone interested in the above, please contact me for further info. I have also received a copy of an extremely interesting document, The Inventory and Valuation of the ' BARREL INN ' Pond St in Sheffield, dated July 20th, 1903. 5 A4 sides of info. relating to the smoke room, bar vaults, entrance passage, tap room, kitchen, 3 attics, landing and stairs, 2 bedrooms, club room, front of house, butchers shop, stable, wash house, 2 cellars, cellar passage and stock in trade.
