Hi Judy There's a wealth of information on individual tradesmen and their addresses in the Historical directories website - which include Pigots, Kellys and others - for North and East Ridings, West Ridings, and separate ones for cities such as Sheffield and Leeds. There are at least 51 such trade directories just for Yorkshire - all-on-line for free!!.. courtesy of a University of Leicester project. The website is www.historicaldirectories.com/ Some of these directories are over 600 pages long, so its best to trawl through the page indices first, to see which part of the directory your people are likely to feature. One can also download individual pages of these directories for printing. I have found a number of my relatives using this source, confirming other data such as censuses. Some of them also give a description of individual towns and villages, mentioning schools, places of worship etc. I think it's a real gold mine!... however most of the directories are mid to late 19th century era, and none after c 1915 (for Yorkshire anyway) Happy hunting! Richard in Surrey ps Hope that I haven't upset any of the commercial FH people by mentioning this site. I have bought a number of such trade directories in the past but think we should share information to break down those brick walls!!..as not all can afford to acquire all the CDs or make visits to libraries...and in the spirit of the new Government freedom of information Act! -----Original Message----- From: JJupar@aol.com [mailto:JJupar@aol.com] Sent: 13 February 2005 10:44 To: ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SHEFF] Whitworths Shop Hi I am researching my gt.grandfather's rise from Pawn Broker to owning a large Tailors and Gentleman's outfitters in West Bars. I know where the shop was but I am interested how long they were in business. They were there in 1900 and in 1914 they were making uniforms for the Army. They were one of the first company's to make ready-made uniforms for soldiers. I wondered if anyone has any later directories which would show the business as I know it continued until at least 1920 and may be longer. Hello Elaine and others. This is the transcription of the notice that was pinned on the door of Eckington Parish Church in January 1815. Sabbath Day Whereas it has been represented to us, by several shopkeepers of this Parish that they are prevented from a due & reverent observance of the Sabbath-day, by persons resorting to their shops on that day we hereby give Notice that we are determined to the utmost of our power to suppress a practice both illegal & immoral, and to detect and punish all persons who keep their shops open on Sundays, by enforcing the penalty which the law enjoins. And we also strongly recommend to all masters to pay their work-people early on Saturday ( or some other evening ), so as to prevent the usual pretence for resorting to shops on the Sunday morning ; namely, That they receive their wages late on Saturday evening, or ( shame to say ) on Sunday morning. A.C.B. Curate Also signed by Church wardens Illegal and Immoral.................what would they make of us today...? Angela (LEE) Eckington U.K.

Kay. The GRO indexes have a marriage in the June quarter of 1864 for Tom HESELWOOD and Ann MAWE registered at Sheffield 9C page 263. Kind Regards Angela (LEE) Eckington U.K.
Thanks to Elaine for finding him as a HAZLEWOOD at Brightside in 1861. and Mel's details, LODGING so no parent info., another Brick Wall, but luckily I found his second marriage in Doncaster yesterday, so I can get the cert. for that and hope it resolves it. His first marriage to ANN MAWE is not to be found, even though I am convinced it will be at Attercliffe, around 1863-5. If anyone sees him whilst transcribing 1851, think of me! Kind Regards Kay-UK
Hello Joanne, The CHAMBERS (Butterwick, Lincolnshire) connection is one that I've only just found out about (September last year) so I haven't had time to look into this name yet. The CHAMBERS person in question is Elizabeth CHAMBERS (a 2nd G.Grandmother) who in 1867 married my 2nd G.Grandfather James Henry THOMAS in Boston, Lincs (presumably St. Botolph's, Boston). Their first child appears to have been my G.Grandmother, Alice THOMAS (born 1869 in Boston) as was Alice's brother Harry b: c1871. The next child that I know of was Emma who was born c1876 in Sheffield so obviously at some stage between 1871 and 1876 James Henry & Elizabeth brought their family from Boston to settle in Sheffield presumably for work reasons, James being a Bricklayer by trade. I presume you have some connection to a CHAMBERS family from Lincs, if so I would be pleased to hear of it, as it's not Sheffield related, mail me off list and we can see if there's any connection. After many versions of Heselwood, Elaine has found me this: HAZLEWOOD Thomas 20 YKS Sheffield 3494 55B In 1861, I cannot see the name spelt this way in the more recent census's so there may be a chance it is him, does anyone have more details from this? In 1871 he was Tom Heselwood, born INTAKE,Yorks. Aged 29 married to Ann (nee Mawe) a Railway Spring worker living at 7 Turin Street Attercliffe. RG10/4699-161-3. Their eldest child was shown as Ada aged 6. James Eyre, aged 41, Mechanic, Address Retiro Street, Oldham Below Town. Born Yorkshire Sheffield. If anyone can claim him and would like the rest of the household, please get in touch. Hi, I recently obtained the death certificate for John ROOTSTEN after some wonderful suggestion from Hugh Waterhouse. I am in particular looking for evidence that John ROOTSTEN and Lewis ROOTSTEN are related. On the death certificate dated the 16th July 1878, an L ROOTSTEN is listed on the death certificate as the informant and son of the deceased. However, the marriage certificate of Lewis ROOTSTEN and Sarah COHEN states that his Father was Elijah ROOTSTEN and he was deceased, the marriage certificate is dated 01 Nov 1871 at the Great Synagogue, Manchester. I know both Lewis and John were listed on the 1871 census in Sheffield at separate addresses and Lewis returned to live in Sheffield after his wedding. I know there is a connection between the two men because they are listed in a number of Sheffield Trade directories with the same occupations and addresses. The two addresses on the death certificates for John; 40 West Bar Green and Lewis; 16 Scotland Street were both used as picture framing businesses and Lewis continued to trade/live at these addresses after 1878. There maybe a mistake on the marriage certificate or for some reason he may have wanted to keep his father a secret. John could be an anglicised version of Elijah. Both men are listed as being born in Poland in the Census. So it's not beyond the realms of possibility that John was Lewis's father. I'm wondering if anybody can help me find John's burial place, so that maybe I can find an inscription. I'm not sure if John is Jewish or not and he maybe under Elijah ROOTSTEN/ROOTSTEIN/ROOTSTON. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Louise Gateshead, Tyne & Wear Researching CROS(S)LAND (Sheffield, Wakefield), ASTLEY (Wakefield), BENNETT (Wakefield, Rotherham), BRADBURY (Wakefield) RUDSTON (Sheffield), ROOTSTEN (Sheffield)
