    3. Hi Found this TRUANTS SCHOOL, HOLLOW MEADOWS, about six miles out of SHEFFIELD, SOUTH YORKSHIRE. Certified 5th March 1879 for 90 children. Became an ordinary Industrial School in 1910. Cessation of certification or closure 10th February 1922. Originally a farmhouse, apparently an annexe for Sheffield Workhouse with some 11 acres of land. Hope it helps Christine 1945 ----- Original Message ----- From: <MissCavell@aol.com> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 10:09 PM Subject: [SHEFF] truants school, Hollow Meadows > Hello all, I've just found a distant rellie on the 1901 census - he was 13 > years old and an inmate of Hollow Meadows Truants school... 3. Sorry Judy and everyone.. The directories website is www.historicaldirectories.org NOT "com". It seems to be very busy site as couldn't get through at teatime - but OK much later. If you do want to print off an individual page - then suggest you use the pdf format as it is clearer and more legible and gives the whole page , whilst the ordinary format seems to miniaturise the page making it too small to read, and the alternative zoom - while enlarging the image, cuts off some of the page on printing Hope this helps Richard in Surrey -----Original Message----- From: Richard Ellis [mailto:richard@ellisresearch.demon.co.uk] Sent: 13 February 2005 18:48 To: ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [SHEFF] Whitworths Shop Hi Judy There's a wealth of information on individual tradesmen and their addresses in the Historical directories website - which include Pigots, Kellys and others - for North and East Ridings, West Ridings, and separate ones for cities such as Sheffield and Leeds. There are at least 51 such trade directories just for Yorkshire - all-on-line for free!!.. courtesy of a University of Leicester project. The website is www.historicaldirectories.com/ Some of these directories are over 600 pages long, so its best to trawl through the page indices first, to see which part of the directory your people are likely to feature. One can also download individual pages of these directories for printing. I have found a number of my relatives using this source, confirming other data such as censuses. Some of them also give a description of individual towns and villages, mentioning schools, places of worship etc. I think it's a real gold mine!... however most of the directories are mid to late 19th century era, and none after c 1915 (for Yorkshire anyway) Happy hunting! Richard in Surrey ps Hope that I haven't upset any of the commercial FH people by mentioning this site. I have bought a number of such trade directories in the past but think we should share information to break down those brick walls!!..as not all can afford to acquire all the CDs or make visits to libraries...and in the spirit of the new Government freedom of information Act! -----Original Message----- From: JJupar@aol.com [mailto:JJupar@aol.com] Sent: 13 February 2005 10:44 To: ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SHEFF] Whitworths Shop Hi I am researching my gt.grandfather's rise from Pawn Broker to owning a large Tailors and Gentleman's outfitters in West Bars. I know where the shop was but I am interested how long they were in business. They were there in 1900 and in 1914 they were making uniforms for the Army. They were one of the first company's to make ready-made uniforms for soldiers. I wondered if anyone has any later directories which would show the business as I know it continued until at least 1920 and may be longer. The original owner was William Rawson Surplice Whitworth but I know his son Ralph carried on the business for some years after his death. 2. Chris Roberts
    3. Clun Street was/is an extension of Clun Road. It simply changes from "Road" to "Street" when it jig-jogs across Ellesmere Street. (Ellesmere veers of Spital Hillwhere it curves into Burngreave Road). Both are a short walk from Burngreave Cemetery and would be in Pitsmoor, close to Attercliffe I believe. My g-g-g-grandmother lived on Clun Road from the 1860/70's on and my g-g-grandmother raised her family in Bressingham Road which is one street below Clun. My mother was born there in 1921 when her mother went home to give birth. I stayed there for a short time as a very small child in 1947, though of course, I have no recollection. When I visited this neighbourhood in 2001, I was so disappointed, as all of the houses on Clun and Bressingham Roads had been torn down sometime after 1971 when I last visited. It was truly the end of a family era that I had heard much about. But, I do have a few photos from the earlier visit to remember. A little bit of trivia that I can share, Chris in Ontario ORIGINAL MESSAGE I know this may be too late and wrong but some years ago I had trouble with a relation of my wife [gt gt gt grandmother] living in No 8 Clun St. The enumerators writing was difficult and at one stage I thought it could have been Dun St. There are a Clun St and Clun Road still in existence I finally found. 3. hello Karen, If William and Ann were married in Sheffield and they were Anglicans they will almost certainly have been married at the Parish Church (now the Cathedral) - someone may be able to look this up at the Archives where they is a complete index of marriages for this church. If I have the right family in 1861, then Wilfred had several siblings: WALKER William 46 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER Ann 46 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER William 21 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER Wilfred 19 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER Edwin 16 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER Eliza 14 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER Ellen 11 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 WALKER Jonathan 8 YKS Sheffield 3478 13 In the last resort you could egt a certificate for one of these siblings to get their mother's maiden name. It looks as though the marriage should be after the beginning of Civil Registration - I had a quick look at FreeBMD but I could not match a William with a possible Ann B____ (but that index is incomplete). Would it be possible to scan the problem part of the certificate and send it offlist so I can see what I make of it ?! (I won't necessarily do any better!). 3. Hello Lesley, Welcome to the list! There is only one Selina MORTON in the 1861 index for Sheffield and Rotherham: MORTON Selina 22 YKS Sheffield 3478 4 [Sheffield West] Too young to be Frederick's mother, but, if his mother *was* a Selina, perhaps this could be a sister. There are no other MORTONs with this page reference. Is this your Frederick? - MORTON Frederick 17 DBY Norton 3467 15B [Norton] Slightly old if he was born in 1846. Again - no other MORTONs with this reference. I don't have the census images on disk - other list member will probably be able to supply them. Although I already have a lot of information there is one particular sticking point. I have recently received the marriage certificate for my ggrandfather Frederick Morton. In 1866 he married Ann Smith in Norton Parish Church. His address at the time of marriage was Four Lane Ends. Ann's address was Derbyshire Lane. In Column 7 the groom's mother is listed instead of father. Her name was Selina Morton. Can anyone find her on the 1861 census? I need to know if Fred is listed as her son or perhaps nephew, as on his birth certificate in 1846 his parents were Matthew and Ann Morton. I have not been able to trace these people in any census,I think perhaps they both died young and left Fred with relatives. 3. Some months have passed since I first posted the names of MOODY and GREENSMITH that I am trying to research. Nothing much has come to light. Ruth Moody 1785 - 1864 NOT verified anywhere. Her sister Elizabeth (no dates for her) married a RICHARD and went to live in Australia. Third sister SARAH (1809 - 1861) married GEORGE GREENSMITH(1811-1895) in Sheffield on 5.7.1835. George had a brother Charles (no dates) who married a MARY(1782-1862) My great grandmother was ELIZABETH GREENSMITH(1838-1907) daughter of SARAH and GEORGE GREENSMITH. Were there any more children?? I have various photographs of these people all of which seem to have been taken in Sheffield but I have no evidence of them living there - until we get to Sarah and George.
