Hi List, new to this one after doing some research for someone. I wonder if sks could do a check on the Kelly's Directory for me please? I am looking for a Johann Heinrich/John Henry LERM, or something very, very similar. John Henry was married in 1920 to a lincolnshire girl who lived in Sheffield, Hilda BAYLEY. John Henry apparently was Dutch/South African and was demobbed here after WW1. At the time of his marriage he was living at 7 Poole Road, Sheffield. Anyone have any ideas as to where I can find a list of South African soldiers from WW1 demobbed here? He may have been transferred to an English regiment. His Army number is not available. Kindest regards Mick McAllister

Hi Everyone, Am researching an ancestor believed killed in the Boer War. These are very informative sites I came across and thought some of you might like to have them in your files. Hi.......Is there a 1841 census for Sheffield? Would it be possible for someone to look up George Glossop b. 1793 in Holloway, Crich, Derbyshire. I cant find him in Derbys just yet and wondered if he went to Sheffield as many George Glossop seem to pop up there. Thanks........Kim May Vic, Australia --------------------------------- Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Movies.
Hi Folks, Please find below the list of additions and updates to the Genuki Yorkshire pages for the past several months. I have several more Hull Church photographs, but the list is getting a bit long for a single posting so they will be included next time. A reminder that if you are trying to locate a place in Yorshire, it should in theory be in the "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages on the Genuki YKS site - if not, drop me a line. If you don't understand what a dale or a perpetual curacy etc. is, then have a scout through the "Important Information" page, linked to at the top of the main Genuki YKS page where you will find pages that give this type of information. A comment: My pet hate of the year is those people who can't be bothered to use capital letters and punctuation in their messages. If people can't take the time to add puctuation etc., why should I have to waste my time deciphering their queries? To quote (nearly) from "Eats, Shoots, and leaves": "Capitalisation and punctuation are courtesies designed to help readers to understand a story without stumbling". Hello! I'm new to this list and am interested in the families of: PEACOCK, SPURR, SOUTH This is what I know so far: Thomas PEACOCK (b. circa 1806) married to Eliza (b. around same time) and lived in Upper Hallum district of Sheffield, Yorkshire. They had many children: Ann, Thomas, Sarah, Fanny, James, Eliza, Henry, Frederick, Mary, Hannah, and Paul (although I'm not sure all survived past adolescence). Their son, Henry PEACOCK (b. 1840) continued to live in Sheffield and married Elizabeth SPURR (b. 1843) and had three sons: Harry, John Thomas, and Samuel Dunworth. Harry (b. 1865) married Margaret Ann SOUTH and lived in Brightside Bierlow and had three sons of his own (Harry, Frank, Sam). John Thomas (b.1870) married a woman named Sarah and had one son (William). Samuel Dunworth, my great-great-grandfather, immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1885. If anyone has any information on these people, or may know of any connection to other Peacocks in England, please let me know! Thank you, Grace
Hi Everyone I thought I would repost this interest. I am looking for the parents of James TOWERS who was born c.1800. He was born in Sheffield. He married Sarah LOWE (b.1801, Chesterfield) on 19 August 1921 in Chesterfield (IGI). They moved to Mansfield, Nottingham the same year where all their children were born except maybe John although his baptism was in Mansfield. The children were: John (1821), William (1823), James (1825), Mary Ann (1827), George (1828), Josiah (1830), Sarah (1832), Eliza (1834), Selina (1836), Harriett (1837) and Jane (1838). James' birth may have been a bit earlier as there is a baptism on the IGI for 2/6/1796 with parents of James and Sarah Towers and again using the IGI it maybe possible that William (c.1798), Elizabeth (c.1801), Josiah (c.1803) and Abraham (c.1805) were James' siblings but I can't confirm this. If anyone can help or is researching this family then please contact me. Regards Karen Cogan West Yorskhire

JAMES TOWERS - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 02 JUN 1796 Queen St Independent Or Congregational Sheffield, Yorkshire, England BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It would appear they were back in Sheffield in 1861. TOWERS James 61 YKS Sheffield 3471 13F TOWERS Sarah 59 DBY Chesterfield 3471 13F With at least three unmarried daughters. His age in 1861 would indicate that the IGI James is not the correct one.... 3471 indicates they were in Ecclesall Bierlow. Hope that helps. Not sure where you want to go with your research as so little is available pre 1901. I would say search the GRO index and finding when he died would be your next step. If he lived till ripe old age he would not be on any of the burial indexes other than at either the Sheffield Archives or Library. Hi I wondered if SKS has the index to 1841 census and would mind checking to see if they a Charles Nell born abt 1827 Sheffield., and any possible family he might be with. Parents could be George and Martha. There could be a number by the name of Charles, so please do not go to any trouble on this if there are. Charles went on to marry Harriet LAWTON and have nine children? Many thanks Regards Gwen Nadin
Hi, Thank you for your suggestion about the Leicester Directories but they are not late enough for my enquiry. Chjeers Judy Elkington
hello Gwen, Brian Richerby bjr@lineone.net has been a member of this list (the last posting I have was from a year ago). He has an interest in the NELL surname. Some time ago we corresponded about the following family: 1841 census ref: piece 1335 e.d. 6 folio 16B Hollis Croft (Sheffield) George NELL 50 Fender M[aker] Y Martha NELL 48 Y Thomas NELL 17 Fender Grinder Y Hannah NELL 14 Metal Polisher Y Charles NELL 12 Fender M[aker] Y Martha NELL 9 Y Samuel NELL 6 Y [*] Sarah BURTON 69 Y [Sarah BURTON has a tick in the 'inhabited' column which suggests the beginning of a new household BUT the usual 'double slash' mark for a new household is after her entry. So it's not clear which household she belongs to] Brian told me that the Thomas in this family was his 3xGt Grandfather Hugh in Sheffield ----- Original Message ----- From: "Noddie" <7thwave@ihug.co.nz> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 11:53 PM Subject: [SHEFF] 1851 census -Charles Nell Sheffield area > Hi > I wondered if SKS has the index to 1841 census and would mind checking to > see if they a Charles Nell born abt 1827 > Sheffield., and any possible family he might be with.
