    3. Indexing update......... We are moving along very well and hope to have quite a few more piece numbers on line in the next week or so. *We still have a few more piece numbers waiting to be transcribed especially for "Ecclesall Bierlow " where folks have fallen out of the indexing for many reasons.... NOT that it is too difficult to do. The data is available from me and can be sent anywhere in the world. A number of very short entries (between 1500-2000) is required to enter the data. To those transcribers that have started and still have a fair way to go could we manage a "push" over the next few weeks please so that we can all see the end of the project before the better weather arrives. Thanks it would be much appreciated. To the indexers especially Ray, Chris, Ian and Danielle you are the best and we couldn't have come this far without you.......to the rest of my merry indexers you are fantastic and judging from the comments I have had or seen in the guest book we can all be very very proud of our First venture..... LOL. but we will take a break once this is completed.....Thanks indexers.... Elaine in Ottawa. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. My thanks to Liz Newbery for her suggestions - Liz thought that she might have been with her future in-laws but they didn't want to put her down, for proprietory's sake. Or that she may be staying nearby, which was also my guess, but nothing concrete emerges. Perhaps a trawl through West Melton 1881 microfilm might be the answer. Several other people on the Notts and Dbyshire lists suggested Annie CUPIT a visitor with the COUPE family in Morton, Dbyshire. 3. Hi Carol I think we may have been through this before but, just in case we didn't, the names of SORBY and NICHOLSON appear amongst the myriad of Sheffield relations of my wife, both mainline and way out to the left or right. SORBY I have this line way back to a ROBERT SAWREBYE married a MARGERY who 7 generations later have a THOMAS SORBY of Attercliffe, schoolmaster and later merchant who married MARTHA STANIFORTH. Their daughter ANN SORBY married in 1802 WILLIAM LOCKWOOD of Farm Bank, Sheffield, founder of the firm that was to become through his 4 sons, Lockwood Brothers. The grandson of the original ROBERT and MARGERY above is described as ROBERT SORSBY married CATHERINE CLAYTON 23 Oct 1597 and he was the first Master Cutler of Sheffield in 1624 and again in 1628. Also town collector in 1615 Bapt. 5 July 1577. There is more on the SORBY family but I hope the above is enough to work out if they are "yours" NICNOLSON ROBERT WOOLLEN of Moorhall, DBY and Gatefields, Sheffield married 23 Oct 1780 HANNAH WILSON of Darnall.[ My wife's 4xgt grandparents] Their eldest daughter REBECCA WOOLLEN was born 16 Sept 1781 and married Sept 1813 one THOMAS NICHOLSON of the Green Lane Works of Sheffield, manufacturer. She died 8 Jan 1830. They had issue. Hope this helps. 1. [SHEFF] WHERE WAS HANNAH CUPIT IN 1881?
    2. hilary jackson
    3. [ Hannah BRAITHWAITE (nee CUPIT) was my grandmother. I have her birth certificate - she was born 18 May 1861 Portland Row, Alfreton. In the 1871 Census she was living with her mother and father William and Annice CUPIT in Attercliffe cum Darnall - 64 Brittania Road age 10. Hannah's birthplace here was given as Kirkby, Notts. She married my Grandfather Josiah BRAITHWAITE in 29 May 1881 in Brampton Parish Church, Nr Rotherham. My Grandfather was living in Brampton Bierlow with his brother Thomas at the time of the 1881 Census in New Street, Brampton Bierlow. My G Grandparents Robert and Harriet BRAITHWAITE were living in Dronfield at Fanshaw Road - but transcribed as BREATHWATE. On Hannah and Josiah's wedding certificate residence is given as West Melton. Her father William CUPIT had died by then and Annice CUPIT had moved to Derbyshire and was living with her brother-in-law and sister, Samuel and Lucy Dean at Nesfield Colliery, Barlow, Derbyshire. In subsequent Census returns Hannah's birthplace is shown as Selston, Derbyshire on 1891 and Selston, Notts in 1901. I have tried all sorts of combinations to find Hannah in the 1881 Census but she's disappeared into thin air! Can anyone suggest anything please? I would be grateful for any suggestions and thank you for trawling thro this essay! Hilary Jackson

Unfortunately, the survival of poor law records for Sheffield is not good (due to the Luftwaffe) but http://www.workhouses.co.uk is usually worth a look. It was the responsibility of the Poor Law Union to look after many children - orphans or those whose families were unable to look after them. They might have a separate orphanage building or be included as part of the workhouse. They were supposed to receive a basic education and indeed, many unions employed a schoolmaster. However, the quality of the education was doubtless very poor. They were often apprenticed out as soon as possible, so that they would no longer be a drain on the public purse. Regards Steve

    3. Wow, thanks Elaine! I'll look to see if any of those burials have connections to my family. May I ask where you found the burial information? And yes, I'm certain my great-grandfather (not great-great as I mistakenly said before) was Samuel Dunworth Peacock -- or Dungworth. It's a bit schizophrenic, but I suspect he dropped the "g" when he came to Canada. Any reference of him that I've found in England includes the "g" but records here in Canada neglect to include the extra letter. It certainly was confusing when I first came across it! Thanks again for your help! 3. Dear List Members I am searching for information on Joan Doreen Lautebach. Known to be living at 30 Onslow Road, Endcliffe, Sheffield in the early 1990s. She was a Hospital Nursing Sister. I have no idea of her ancestry, but she was likely born around the early 1940s. May have studied in Dundee, Scotland .. definately in Dundee in July of 1967. Can anyone help? Sue Bruce
