Hi List, new to this one after doing some research for someone. I wonder if sks could do a check on the Kelly's Directory for me please? I am looking for a Johann Heinrich/John Henry LERM, or something very, very similar. John Henry was married in 1920 to a lincolnshire girl who lived in Sheffield, Hilda BAYLEY. John Henry apparently was Dutch/South African and was demobbed here after WW1. At the time of his marriage he was living at 7 Poole Road, Sheffield. Anyone have any ideas as to where I can find a list of South African soldiers from WW1 demobbed here? He may have been transferred to an English regiment. His Army number is not available. Kindest regards Mick McAllister

He took a direct hit from a bomb whilst firespotting in Sheffield during the blitz. The hole in the ground at the back of the Magnet pub was there for many years after and could still be there as far as I know. Regarding: "The Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour (WWII) has been indexed for the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire. It is on Genuki. It was referenced in a post on Yorksgen." Please be aware that this is an incomplete list. Mike Bailey Sawtry Cambs
I posted the url for the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour (WWII): http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Indexes/NE_WarDead/index.html Mike Bailey pointed out that the list was incomplete. On this specific point, I wonder if Mike can estimate a percentage for completeness, and if there is a reason for the missing persons. On a more general point, we should all be aware that all record sets, even official ones are always incomplete for a variety of reasons. For example, not all English BMDs were registered after 1837, and even those that were registered were not indexed properly. FreeBMD is a transcription which can introduce more errors (and catch some original ones). Any group of records, except very small ones, will have errors and omissions but many beginners in genealogy, and sometimes experienced people :-), don't remember this. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

The Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour (WWII) has been indexed for the counties of Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire. It is on Genuki. It was referenced in a post on Yorksgen. The url is: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Indexes/NE_WarDead/index.html There are many deaths from Sheffield recorded, although I think the most in these counties were from Hull. I see several surnames that have been asked about on this group. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

> Hi Margaret I'm not sure where in the world you are researching from, but I too had a record on the IGI that I wanted checking out for accuracy. In fact the record I was especially interested in just gave a birth date (no christening or batch number) and had been submitted by an LDS member. I contacted Sheffield Archives, who in return for a small cheque, photocopied the entry for me. Surprisingly, they found a christening in the Cathedral registers (that gave the same birth date) , and confirmed that the information was accurate. Also the occupation of the father was given too. Overall I was delighted! I think the cost was 35p per photocopy and 35p P&P, so a positive bargain!! I've done this with several other archives , and whilst the price varies, they've always obliged and saved a trip. Hope this is of some help to you best wishes Sally Halesowen > > The IGI has a record of the baptism of Joseph ELLIOTT, son of Richard > and > Sarah, at the Cathedral of St Peter and St. Paul, Sheffield on 27 Oct > 1805. > Could someone confirm this for me please. > > I should also like to know if he married Adelina STRAFFORD there > sometime > between 1825 and 1829 > > Thank you for any help > > Regards > Margaret
Marion There was a children's home on Herries Road as part of the old Sheffield Union Workhouse, now the Northern General Hospital. The home is now used as the Supplies Department for said hospital. Dear Margaret, By the 1830's the Parish of Sheffield had at least two chapels-of-ease, at Ecclesall and Attercliffe, where baptisms would have taken place. If these registers are not in the City archives, then they may be with the parishes these chapels eventually became. In addition there was also St. Paul's Church, demolished in the 1930's and now the site of the Peace Gardens, and St. James' Church, blitzed in the 1940's and now the site of the NUM Headquarters (St. James' House). When I assisted the Cathedral Archivist 20 years ago, these registers were kept with the Cathedral's. It at least gives you some other places to look if there's nothing in the Cathedral registers. The IGI has a record of the baptism of Joseph ELLIOTT, son of Richard and Sarah, at the Cathedral of St Peter and St. Paul, Sheffield on 27 Oct 1805. Could someone confirm this for me please. I should also like to know if he married Adelina STRAFFORD there sometime between 1825 and 1829 Thank you for any help Regards Margaret
Could someone tell me please if there is a record of baptism for Richard ELLIOTT on 16.09.1832 there, or shortly afterwards. Thank you for any help Margaret

Sheffield had very very few churches in 1832 so the baptism probably occurred at the Parish Church later to become the Cathedral......... Unfortunately the only place there is an index for baptisms is at the Sheffield Archives and may not go to 1832 as yet........The records are on the IGI till 1818 with a few entries up to 1828, prior to that there is only what is available at the Archives you could try e-mailing them and asking your question. Takes quite some time to look through the indexes I can tell you and then turn any record up. NOT computerized they are on fiche or at least the marriages were. That's what we need to be filmed by the LDS.........who will eventually get back to filming. Is this your Richard? Burial Fulwood Christ Church.
