Hi everyone,I would like to put my oar in re the 600 .I don't think the one you are refering to was the 600 that was up Westbar Green Just above Scotland Street and opposit the tram sheds. The one on West Bar opposit Lambert Street closed in the sixties P.W.Lacey then moved into the premises when there building was redeveloped for Cole Bros. It was turned into Town or Batchelor flats when P.W. Lacey went out of business.

Frank, It wasn't there in 1903. It seems that it was a shop at one time, (P. W. Lacey). I don't remember that at all! But maybe it was built as a department store. It is also described as a 'hostel' or 'The Hostel'. It was also known as 'Tudor House' at one time. still digging... Hi Gordon, For some years it carried the legend painted on the front of P.W. Lacey [a warehouse]. Whether it was that before it became a Doss House or after I am not sure. Definitely now a block of luxury flats. Judy

Hi everyone Is there anyone who can tell me anything about the Blue Coats School that was in the area of Campo Lane in the city centre. A work colleague has told me that her Gt Grandfather went to the school. We know it was a school for children who had been orphaned, placed into care or abandoned. So we're hoping that the records of the school are still in existence. I've got 3 pictures of it from Sheffield Pics, but we're hoping for a little bit of history that might help her to trace who her Gt Gt Grandparents were. Many thanks in advance. Patrick (Bournemouth, Dorset)
Josephine - have you thought of putting your query on to the Rotherham mailing list? ENG-ROTHERHAM-L@rootsweb.com <ENG-ROTHERHAM-L@rootsweb.com> is the email address - I think if you just send a blank email with the word subscribe in the heading. You will then get a confirmation; then you can put this on there - sorry if I appear to be teaching you to suck eggs! Hi Caroline There are a lot of errors in the 1901, mainly due to the farming out of the transcribing to overseas transcribers. However, you can fill in a form on the 1901 website and ask them to amend - but you need to see the original page first to see if it is a transcription error as it might in fact say Barnsley because the enumerator was told her birthplace was Barnsley. HI to all I recently found my great grandfathers sister but I have noticed that the census has their birth place wrong? I noticed for rebecca Smith that in 1901 it says that she was born in Attercliffe Sheffield, but I have her birth cert and it is Barnsley area she was born? I wondered if anyone else has noticed this? Caroline
Hello List, Just yesterday we found the following reference to a daughter of my 3Xs great grandad Charles Dixon. Her name was Elizabeth Dixon. She married Joseph Muscroft a Batchelor aged 31 (she was 32) at All Sts. Rotherham. Marriage after Banns Aug 9th 1852, Occupation, blade grinder. He died Jun Qtr. 1857 in Sheffield. They had as far as I know only one daughter Elizabeth Muscroft who was born 1856 or thereabouts. She was 5 years old on the 1861 Sheffield census. She appears as living with a great aunt (Harriet Webster, (likely a sister of Eleanor Webster wife of Charles Dixon mentioned above) in London on the 1871 census at the age of 15 years. Joseph Muscroft's father was a Stephen Muscroft a Cordwainer. I don't know if he was living in Rotherham... does anyone know or have any connection to these particular Muscrofts. kindest regards, Josephine, Ontario, Canada.

Hi Marion Theres a photo of the old hostel at the corner of West Bar and Wheelhouse Lane on Sheffield Genealogy website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~engsheffield/photos/streets/streetrelated/vagshelter.htm As Richard suggests, I think it was used as a short stay homeless shelter at least in the late 1950 early part of 1960s If anyone can confirm what it was used for I'd appreciate the info for adding to the website photo. That was certainly going into the 1960s. It was known locally as Buckingham Palace. I used to pass it very day. Chris Roderick
I apologise if I seemed brusque re the listing of the WW11 Roll of Honour. Any such task takes enormous dedication and effort and I have no wish to malign the contributors. My concern is that I am aware of many people, some of whom I later knew as friends, who were held or killed in the Far East who I am told appeared not to be listed in some publications, including the War Graves websites. In 1971 I lived for some months in Singapore in a building in which were located the infamous Changi murals. I used the opportunity to talk to many ex PoWs of Commonwealth and UK origin and was horrified by their stories. I believed them when they told me that many of their comrades had gone unrecorded. To my eternal sorrow I have also stood to attention in my uniform at Kranjii Cemetery and saluted some of those dead. However, the story somewhat comes up to date as in the last few weeks it appears that a database, detailing the true extent of the number of PoWs that perished in Japanese hands, has been released. Before this facts were distorted and incomplete because of the lack of information from the Japanese. The event has broken in some broadsheets and I note that the DT newspaper says the information is held at the PoW Research Network Japan:homepage3.nifty.com/pow-j/e/. Personally I have no wish to visit the website as knowing some of the horrific details of that war is enough. I know that this list looks at the scholastic side of history and perhaps there is no place for emotion or remembrance outside the immediate task of tracing ancestors. But we live with history and it is real as so many of our people have found to their cost. It is not just a record in a book. Finally, my pedantic nature tells me that no list of such historically epic but sad proportions can ever be accurate. Mike Bailey (ex Carbrook) Sawtry Cambs
