    1. Sheffield Flood
    2. Hi All Last year saw the 140th anniversary of the Sheffield Flood and the occasion was marked by a 4 day event [2 guided walks, an exhibition and a service at St Polycarp's Church]. The whole thing was filmed by Phil [of Very Much So Productions] with a view to producing a film of the event. I though some of you may be interested to read a message I have just received from him. He says: Finally I am almost finished on the film, and I have to say it is a work of art!! What I intend to to do is make it available to each and everyone at a nominal price on DVD. As you can guess it has been a labour of sweat and tears, and an obsession, something I know you can understand. But its almost done! I hope to have copies available in time for the anniversary next a week, and people can obtain them by contacting me by email or phone. If I may be so bold I would like to ask if you would circulate the message to ANYONE and EVERYONE you know who may be interested. Ie. Those that were there, those that are interested in the story, or history in general. The price will be £20. The film is 30 mins long Hope this will be of interest to you. Best Wishes Karen Lightowler Doncaster South Yorkshire

    3. Hi Eunice, Well your request is a little vague but I will have a go.......... William T PARR, someone told me that he > died > > > in Sheffield but not sure???.He was born in Burnham Overy in Norfolk 1860>> First do you know where he was in 1901?...... that is the last census that is available to us.......and is available on line for you to search. free... I have just had a quick look and he's there aged 40, a Maltster and in Ampthill. His family are with him. Secondly.........The burial indexes that are available for Sheffield are very hit and miss and certainly do not cover all cemeteries......So you need to check the GRO indexes out for his actual death. Third........The marriage of his daughter would help as we might be able to search for her new family but there again you information is rather sketchy. . I hope my suggestions to you bear fruit. There is no Lautebach listed in the 1920 Whites Directory of Sheffield. as a mineral water manufacturer...or that name at all........... There are NO further census available after the 1901 census.....I feel you need to do more research in Sunderland and see what that turns up....... Have you tried looking for a marriage for her in the GRO indexes........Not a common name so shouldn't take long to search........ Regards. 2. Elaine Pickard
    3. To my favourite people...... Just to let you know that we have only five more piece numbers to be indexed for Sheffield North and five for Rotherham to complete the 1841 indexing... .. So if you have a spare hour per day the census will be a thing of the past and we can all get back to researching. LOL. 1. re- Mawby family in 1881-91? Help please
    2. CAROLINE COFFEY
    3. Hi again I wondered if anyone can help me find my great grandfathers sisters husbands family? I am looking for Edwin George Mawby and his family he was born in 1869, but on the 1901 census he was supposed to have been born Isle of White Hants? I was speaking to a Mawby family memeber and she had trouble finding his birth as well as she was told he wasn't born in Isle Of White. Another factor which seems to happen to me a lot is that on the 1901 census his name was George Edward Mawby? But I was told it was Edwin George Mawby? The family were living in Barnsley in 1901? If anyone can help! Thanks Caroline

I was speaking to a Mawby family member and she had trouble finding his birth as well as she was told he wasn't born in Isle Of White. Hi I had a look at the 1881 census for you and I think I can see where the trouble arose. Two of the older children were born in the Isle of Wight but your chappie, if this is the right one, was born in Hayes Green Middlesex. However this Edwin was only ten years old. Possibly as his two older sibling were born on the Isle of Wight he possibly thought he was as well. I had a look at the 1901 census and found George Mawby [possibly he preferred to be called George rather than Edwin] and as you say it says Isle of White spelt Wight]. I couldn't see him on the 1891 census for anywhere at Ancestry.co.uk. I have sent you two attachments off line which may help you to sort this out. I hope they help. 3. I have been looking for a death of a William T Parr in Sheffield and have had no luck. I wonder if anyone can help me please. William was born in Burnham Overy (Docking) in 1860 and he married twice. He moved down to live in Ampthill Bedford where he married his second wife Eliza Roberts. Eliza died in j/a/s quarter 1932. William's daughter Emily who married an Edward Addington in Sept 1907 and then moved to Sheffield came down to Ampthill and took her father up to live with her. I have tried all avenues to find his death and so far have had no luck. Is there anyone out there that could try and solve this problem please. Thanks in advance Eunice - Australia

    3. Hi everyone, The latest Pevsner guide to Sheffield describes the above building as follows:- "On the N side of West Bar, the former Common Lodging House(Now Mayfair Court), 1912, by John Reginald Truelove, whose father Alderman Truelove paid for the building. It provided hostel accommodation superior to the often insanitary lodgings of private landlords, together with public rooms and social facilities. One of the most interesting buildings of its period in the city. Tall and thin with a strikingly broad cornice, central balcony and accomplished detailing with rusticated brick quoins and contrasting red and yellow brick. The public rooms on the lower floors were lit by broad segmental-arched windows. Slit like openings to the four floors of bedrooms above which were divided by a corridor into two rows of cubicles." Hope this helps, Dave Yates -- Whatever you Wanadoo: http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/time/ This email has been checked for most known viruses - find out more at: http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/help/id/7098.htm

    3. hello Judith, I am afraid it doesn't. The western edge of the map is about 500 yards west of the main crossroads in Grenoside village. The junction of Skew Hill Lane and Stephen Lane (both of which still exist), is also on this edge. Incidentally, the Wortley Union Workhouse is by the southern edge of the map.
