In a message dated 08/03/2005 11:00:07 GMT Standard Time, mavisgg@btinternet.com writes: I have a marriage certificate for ANN BARSTOW and JOHN HODGSON on 13th April 1873, does anyone have access to the parish record film for St. Mary's? I am querying the witnesses given as Maria Barstow and Allen Barstow as I cannot find either of these names amongst the Barstows on any census. I think they may be Maurice and maybe Selina. Hi I don't think that their names would both be wrong. Just because they are not on a census doesn't mean that they didn't exist. What you have to remember with a census is, that it is just a list of people spending the night at that particular address. The enumerator could have missed them or they could have been abroad on holiday. You do not say what makes you believe that they were called something else, but surely there would have been no need to lie. Or perhaps they didn't have any witnesses and these two were asked at the church door if they would witness the marriage and the names were made up. How old were the participants. Is it likely that they were under 21 and needed parental permission. In which case they may have lied about their names, after all the vicar is hardly likely to ask for proof of identification. If you could give the year and place of birth for the bride I can look her up for you. There are many reasons. I hope you find the right one. Hi Josephine The book is only 3yrs old, published 2001. You can obtain a copy of the book from any good bookstore (in Sheffield that is) or over the internet, access the following webpage for the ISBN#. Just type the ISBN # into a search engine and it should bring up details of where a copy can be obtained over the internet. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~engsheffield/webpages/books.htm Although all the streets mentioned (plus I would assume many others) were on Dixon owned land originally, not all the streets were named after family members. The original street name of Garth wasnt necessarily a Dixon family name. The Garry street name being named after a family pet should be taken "with a pinch of salt" as we say over here. Hi Josephine The following street name extracts are taken from Peter Harvey's book "Street Names of Sheffield". Peter Harvey carried out extensive research over a number of years in an attempt to compile the most precise information possible. However, he does state that some of the information he gives are deductions which he came to after being unsuccessful at finding further information about a particular street. Dixon Lane, Sheffield 1 .............. is one of the oldest street names in the city. It can be traced back to the seventeenth century. Almost certainly the name comes from the surname of an ancient resident, but nobody knows who he was. Dixon Street, Sheffield 6 ..................... from the same family as the Dixon Road above. The family works were on nearby Cornish Place. Land and houses near the works were sold by auction after the death of Henry Isaac Dixon in 1912. Dixon Rd, Sheffield 6 ................. after the Dixon family, of the well known cutlery firm, James Dixon and sons. The Dixons lived for some years at Hillsborough Hall, which was later a branch library. When part of their land was developed, the streets were mostly given family names :................. DOROTHY, one of James Willis Dixon's children, Gladys, married Reginald Thorpe Wilson, of Bolsterstone. Dorothy, born 1901, was their daughter. GARRY, this road was origiunally named Garth Road but renamed in 1903. It was reportedly named after a Dixon family pet called "Garry", but a surviving Dixon family member who Peter Harvey contacted couldnt confirm this. LENNOX , after Lennox Burton Dixon SHEPPERSON, after James Willis Dixon.s wife who was Anne Shepperson. WARNER, after Sir Pelham "Plum" Warner.(cricketer) A close friend of Archibald Willis & Lennox Burton Dixon. WILLIS, after Archibald Willis Dixon. WYNARD, after Wynard Dixon son of J W Dixon. Hi Gordon and List, Thankyou very much for the insight re Dixon Lane... I have a few candidates for who'm the street may have been named, but need to do a bit more research first. I shall certainly try and find a copy of Peter Harvey's Book as it is interesting in itself. A good resource for Sheffield Streets. I do know that a Mr. Ellison a trusted retainer of the Dukes of Norfolk was given some leeway and responsibility for the naming of some Sheffield Streets for a certain period of time in the 1700's. Please forgive my ignorance but could someone please give me a little more information as to when Peter Harvey's Book was Published and maybe the Publisher's name...as Peter Harvey reports, the streets named for the sons of James Dixon and his family, were added on at least a hundred years later... as far as the name Garry/Garth goes, I must say that of all the Dixons living in Sheffield I have no Garth or Garry recorded. and as I have about two thousand Dixon names on record, I would think it very likely that this was a pet's name... please feel free to correct me if anyone knows anything different.this is the most complicated research I have ever undertaken. I had no idea how convoluted the Dixon lines really were. Thankyou again Gordon, kindest regards, Josephine. -----Original Message----- From: SheffGens [mailto:SheffGens@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: March 6, 2005 9:43 AM To: ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SHEFF] Sheffield Street Names...
