I think at the time you are looking it was probably in Derbyshire. It may help you to look for them in the 12841 census for that area. They were all born in the county (Yorkshire) but the occupation of the head of household was unreadable! The only address given is Knowle but the description of the enumeration district is as follows: "All that part of Stannington which lies to the East from /Rowell Bridge to the top of Spout Lane then North East of the Road from Spout Lane Top to the Methodist Chapel all the houses at Knowle Top then following the Sheffield Road North and South to the Racre? Top from thence on the West side of the Road to Town End and the North and South sides of the Road from Top of Park Lane to Park Side" Sorry I can't help with any later census information. 3. Hi Hilary, First let me say "Oh what a tangled web we weave"...................LOL. I decided to try for David McPhaden on free BMD............................ Looking for a birth about 1866.......and Nothing. I did find a family in Ecclesall Bierlow on the 1871 census the father being David and from Scotland but spelt McPheden he was 43 but he had a 13 year old son David..........But still not the correct age for you David........ The older David died in 1886...... There was also a David McFeden born the March qtr of 1871 in Ecclesall Bierlow 9c 344. No a common name for Sheffield...... I wonder if he could have been an illegitimate child of a daughter of the older David McPheden.... This family lived on Carr Road........Walkley....... That's my two cents worth........ 1. [SHEFF] DAVID MCPHADEN BORN SHEFFIELD DIED WEST MELTON
    2. hilary jackson
    3. Can anyone out there please point me in the right direction to find the birth of David MCPHADEN who was my father's "stepfather". David was born in Sheffield according to the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census records. In 1881 he was living as a boarder (age 16) at Greggs Row, Hunningley Lane, Ardsley, Barnsley, Yorkshire with 3 other boarders in the home of William and Mary JEFFERY and their 3 children - David was working as a Colliery Pony Driver. My Father, Albert BRAITHWAITE, told me that when David first came to live with the BRAITHWAITE family at 43 York Street, Brampton Bierlow, (1891 Census) he changed his name for some reason unknown to my Father. In the Census he is shown as David JOHNSON, Boarder, single, age 25, Colliery Labourer (Em'ee), born Sheffield, Yorkshire. At this time he was working at Great Houghton Colliery. Although David has an Irish name, my Father was convinced he wasn't Irish. In the 1901 Census the BRAITHWAITE family are living at 26 Winterwell Road, Wath upon Dearne and David is shown again as David MCPHADEN, Boarder, single, age 35, Cole Miner Labourer Below, born Yorks, Sheffield. My Grandfather, Josiah BRAITHWAITE died in 1914. David and my Grandmother, Hannah BRAITHWAITE became a 'couple' but an older cousin doesn't think they got married. I can't find a record to date of their marriage but there are two graves in West Melton church graveyard - Josiah has a separate grave and Hannah and David are there too in a grave together - their grave inscribed as "In loving memory of Hannah the dearly beloved wife of David McPhaden who died 10 Feb 1924 aged 63 years. "Her end was peace"; Also of the above named David McPhaden, who died Dec 4th 1926 aged 61 years "Thy will be done." On David's death certificate it shows the death of David at 26 Winterwell Road, Wath upon Dearne with the informant shown as Charles D McPhaden, Nephew, 34 Burman Road, Wath upon Dearne. I would love to know if anyone is researching the McPhaden family and if anyone can point me in the right direction to find the McPhaden family in Sheffield in the 1800s and the birth of David McPhaden. 1. Armitage family - 1841 census lookup
    2. If anyone could look at the 1841 census page for the following family (I am indebted to the 1841 census indexers for the below info that was just added to the web site in early March), I would greatly appreciate it. 1841 index Piece 1327/3 ED 16 Folio 51a Reg. dist. Bradfield Armitage, Alfred 25 Armitage, Mary 25 Armitage, Henry 7 Armitage, Thomas 6 Armitage, Joseph 2 Armitage, Mary Ann 1 I am interested in knowing the county of birth of all members of the family and the address of the family (index shows Knowle ?, could be Knowle Top, Stannington). Also, if this family or the family members exist in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, I would greatly appreciate any information about them also. In the Brightside Bierlow 1871 census, Mary Armitage is listed as age 56, a widow, born in Bradfield with two unmarried sons, Henry age 38 and Thomas age 36 both born in Stannington. So, it may be that Alfred Armitage died early and the widow and family are in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Thank you for any help you can give. Richard Helm richhelm@aol.com

    3. Hi Mavis, Just had a quick look at my Sheffield material and found the only Maria mentioned is on the 1891 census....... Barstow Maria wife M 66 YKS Sheffield 34 Broomhall St 13 40 3815 her husbands name by the way is Elias which I can see being transcribed to read Allan. I have not checked the 1881 census (which I am sure you will have done) to see where this couple where at that time period.....they are NOT on the 1861 census index. My great grandmothers marriage entry at St Michael & All Angels Neepsend had her father down as Samuel Mayo a file cutter. Her father was Robert and a miner so mistakes did happen. Hope this helps. 3. hello Mavis, The original registers for St Mary's, Walkley are held at Sheffield Archives - the 19th century ones are on microfiche. The Archives are currently closed for their annual stock-taking. When they re-open in a week's time it should be possible to check those signatures. Original signatures are always the hardest parts of a document to transcribe because you don't have the rest of the document to compare them with when the hand writing is difficult to decipher. 1. Trying To Find Out More
    2. Shelagh Garside
    3. Hi everyone I appeared to have uncovered another scandal in my family tree (I do like finding those, it makes the modern world we live in seem not so bad after all, despite what the politicians tell us about the decline in "family values"!). I had the marriage of Henry Howgate and Sarah Champion in 1844, I had uncovered several children, the youngest being born in 1864. When I found the couple on the 1871 it was apparent they had parted. Henry lived with his mother in Sheffield until his death in 1873 and Sarah had moved, with her daughters, to South Meols in Lancashire where she remained until her death in 1907. I've looked at the 1861 census in the Sheffield archives and at that time Henry is living with his mother and eldest daughter while Sarah and her other 2 daughters are at Sarah's mother's house - it's not clear whether they are living there or just visiting. I recently started investigating family plots in the Sheffield General Cemetery. When I looked at the plot belonging to Henry's brother, Benjamin, I found a "stray" baby, Clara Howgate, daughter of Sarah who's described as a spinster - the baby was born in 1863 and died when only a few weeks old. As I knew that there were no unmarried Sarah Howgate's in the family at that time I was intrigued and sent for the birth certificate of the baby and discovered that she was the daughter of Sarah Howgate formerly Champion - there are no details of the father given on the birth certificate. Knowing there was a younger daughter born in 1864 who I had assumed to be Henry's daughter I sent for her birth certificate too and sure enough she is illegitimate. I would love to know more about what happened back then in the 1860's! Sarah set up her guest house in Lancashire before her husband's death - does this make it likely that she had her own independent income? I think it highly unlikely this couple divorced but wonder if there would have been some sort of separation agreement. In 1863 Sarah's address is 6 Franklin Court and in 1864 it is 157 South Street - is there any way of finding out who else lived at those addresses at that time? Thanks - Shelagh
