    1. Yorkshiremen to Nova Scotia 1772 - 1775
    2. Norm Ellison
    3. Greetings from Victoria, BC While doing some internet searching I came across two websites that may be of interest to list members; http://heritage.tantramar.com/trib-article.html and also a shortened version of the above with additional information - http://heritage.tantramar.com/. Not satisfied with the slow settlement of Nova Scotia (which also included New Brunswick) at that time. Lieutenant Governor Michael Franklin went to NorthYorkshire in 1769 - 70 to seek immigrants. His efforts prompted the "Yorkshire Immigration" of 1772 -75 when over 1000 settlers left Yorkshire bound for Nova Scotia. A newspaper article from the Sackville Tribune Post gives the names of several of the families from Yorkshire and where they settled in Nova Scotia. Norm

    3. Hi Bev, I also have a Barnes connection from the Manor but I have had difficulty matching them all up and am still working on the 1841 census so have done no research for a while. My Barnes....... Noah and William both married into my WOODHOUSE Family..... .in the 1850's.. There seems to have been a whole slew of Barnes at the Manor at that time which means there has to be a connection some where....can't have been that populated at that time....... If you think its worthwhile us trying to sort them out please get in touch with me. Kindest regards. Elaine in Ottawa. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. Hello Richard, I can't help you with the 1851 Census info for Sheffield but I do have the 1851 Census CD for Bradfield and it lists three other ARMITAGE men that were Razor Grinders living at Stannington if these are related to your family, John ARMITAGE (age: 26) Joseph ARMITAGE (age: 25) George ARMITAGE (age: 22) If you want further details of these (and also details from the 1841 Bradfield CD) please mail me. 3. Hi Lisa, As the saying goes "don't throw the Baby out with the bath water"......... I have a feeling that George was maybe married to someone before Annis??? and the mother of George Jnr. My reason for this is the following. 1861 census index. 3463 - 96b. which covers Nether Hallam. George aged 27 born Owlerton as they all were. Anise aged 17 Alfred aged 24. Charles aged 22. Fred 19 George Witham aged 3. On the 1871 census I see that they live at 43 Heavygate Road...... My neck of the woods........ Anise's age is 34 so incorrect on the 1861 census. Their children have some of the same names as the brothers of Georges....... I found the following at St Mary's Walkley Cemetery so Hugh might be able to give you the grave number...... PROCTOR Annis 12 Dec 1897 111 Heavygate Rd 59 Hope this helps. Regards. Elaine in Ottawa. not Sheffield as I wrote yesterday.. LOL. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Hi all, I have had some help on this but I have George's eldest son who was born in 1857 so I do think that counts out the 1859 marraige to an Annis Thickett. It was suggested that I should have a look at 1837online - for anyone this may be useful for you can see quite a few of the saem images on the FreeBMD website, if you start from the home page and then go to View Images. It not very well indexed but its free !! Anymore suggestions on what to do would be appreciated. 3. Dear List I have a bit of a mystery with a family on the 1861 census. There are two people called Jonathan Beardshaw aged 34 and 38 on the same folio page 3469 15F and both appear to have wives and children. It would be easy to assume they are living in the same house but I guess I mustn't make this assumption. Has any one got access to the census images to confirm the situation? I would also like to know the street name and their occupations? Regards Tony Beardshaw <http://www.my-history.co.uk>

    1. 1851 & 1861 Armitage census lookup request
    2. Hello to all, With the help from the 1841 indexers, Ann & Connie, I have found the details about the Alfred Armitage family in Bradfield (Stannington) in the 1841 census. And, that they moved from that area before the 1851 census. If anyone can look for them in the 1851 and 1861 censuses, I would greatly appreciate it. On the 31 Oct 1858 marriage record of Mary Ann, his daughter, Alfred's address is listed as Andrews St., Sheffield. On the 2 Apr 1871 census, Alfred's wife (now widow) is living at 32 Andrew St., Brightside, Brightside Bierlow with two of her sons, Henry and Thomas. She is also at 38 Andrew St. in the 1881 census with the same two unmarried sons. So, my best guess for 1851 would be in Brightside Bierlow with the family being: Alfred Armitage approx. age 35-36 razor blade grinder born in ? Mary Armitage approx. age 35-36 born in Bradfield Henry Armitage approx. age 17 born in Stannington Thomas Armitage approx. age 15 born in Stannington Mary Ann Armitage approx. age 11 born in Stannington There may also be a son Joseph Armitage age 12, I haven't found him in the 1871 census, so I don't know if he is alive in 1851. For the 1861 census, again in Brightside, Brightside Bierlow, at least the following family members should be on Andrew St. Mary Armitage approx. age 45-46 born in Bradfield Henry Armitage approx. age 27 born in Stannington Thomas Armitage approx. age 25 born in Stannington (Andrew may be dead by this time and Mary Ann has married Charles Oliver) Again, thanks for any help you can offer. 1. new to list - here are my interests
    2. Amanda
    3. Hello all, I just came accross your list yesterday and I am hoping there might be one of you out there who can make a connection to my family. One branch of my ancestors came over to the state of NY in the US from the areas of West Riding that I understand to be Bolsterstone, Midhope, and Ecclesfield. Two members came over in the 1860's-1870's - Benjamin SENIOR and his son, Benjamin Senior. The first Benjmin was born around 1842 to George Senior (b. 1813) and Sarah CROSSLEY (b. 1813). George's parents were George Senior (b. 1780) and Martha KAY. Sarah's parents were Benjamin Crossley and Ruth ELLIOT. The second Benjamin was born in October of 1865. I do not know who his mother is. Neither she nor any of Benjamin's siblings ever followed them to the US. My grandmother says that her mother used to write to one of Benjamin's (the second one) brothers, and his name was Thomas. We know nothing more, except that both the Benjamins were knife makers. They continued that craft here. I know that there were a substantial number of Senior families in the area, and I am hoping there still are. I would really like to find some cousins and discover more about our past. I appreciate your time. Amanda Wall _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!

    2. Hugh Waterhouse
    3. hello Valerie, I don't know about graveyards in Rotherham, but as for Brightside I think the most likely place is Burngreave Cemetery, especially as they were nonconformists. As it was a municipal cemetery, it had both consecrated (Anglican) and unconsecrated sections - and it is in Brightside. Alfred Road is close to the River Don and therefore not far from Attercliffe Municipal Cemetery the other side of the river, but I could not find them in the available index for that cemetery. The burial registers for Burngreave, as well as an index, are on film at Sheffield Archives. The name WILLIAMS is surprisingly not too common in Sheffield (unlike Welsh Wales where I have an ancestor called William WILLIAMS!). So this may be Thomas from FreeBMD: GRO Index (from FreeBMD) Deaths March Qtr 1879 Williams Thomas 59 Sheffield 9c 366 I couldn't find the other two Of course, if Sophia is buried in a family plot in Rotherham, Thomas and Sarah might also be buried there, even if they lived in Sheffield.
