    2. Lisa Evans
    3. Hi everyone, Many apologies (especially to Elaine) for not making my last request clear !!! if anyone has the 1861 census I would like to know what other info is on the original census page for the following references PROCTOR Annis 24 YKS Sheffield 3486 53 PROCTOR Anice 17 YKS Owlerton 3463 96B Its the occupation of the husband of Annis Proctor nin particular I am after - he should be GEorge Henry Proctor. So I think it will be the first one of the 2 as the second one at Owlerton is probably not old enough to have a husband yet. Many thanks to anyone who has helped me track down this info. 3. Gary, Don't worry about messing up, we have all had to start at the beginning at some time or other. If you post any messages to the list, always CAPITALISE your surnames, that way they stand out to anyone who may have similar interests. Have you any idea what areas of Sheffield your MAHON family came from?..................If you do know it may help other list members to help you with some info. Also any known first names would be a help that way anyone with access to Census information could give you some help. Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp. 2. Jeremy Crawshaw
    3. Hello Vicki, You didn't mention what area of Sheffield your OATES family were from, mine were from Stannington and (with the help of others) have managed to trace them back to c1613 to Antonie OTTES of Stannington. The OATES males were mainly cutlers and farmers, my first connection is Hannah OATES a 4th G.Grandmother who married my 4th G.Grandfather William BRADWELL at St. Paul's Church, Sheffield on 28th November 1816. All of William & Hannah's children were baptised at Stannington Presbyterian (now Underbank Chapel - Unitarian), Stannington, the OATES and BRADWELLS being nonconformists. I don't know of any OATES family members further forward than the birth of Hannah in 1791 (a daughter of Matthew & Esther OATES -nee BRADSHAW) so I couldn't really say if your family members are connected or not but if your family do hail from Stannington there is a very good possibility of a connection. If you do know anything further please let me know. Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp. 1. RE: [SHEFF] 1861 Census lookup
    2. Tony Beardshaw
    3. Hi Martin, > Out of interest, do you know what the relationship is between the two > Jonathan's? It's an interesting story (to me anyway). I've now figured out that the Jonathan born in 1822 was the 28th child of 29 children born to Jonathan Beardshaw landlord of The Ball Inn in Hawley Croft. There were 29 children (only one wife!) but only the 1st and 28th lived. George Beardshaw who was the 1st child that lived had 7 children and the last one born in 1827 was also named Jonathan. I don't suppose they gave a thought about the confusion this would cause in later years. So I guess that makes them Uncle and Nephew with only 4/5 years between them. I descend from George's 1st son Vickers George Beardshaw and I'm still trying to work out where they got the name Vickers from! > By the way, after looking at the map I double checked the Glossop Road bit > because the position on the map doesn't tie up whereas the directory entry > does tie up by saying Northumberland Rd. However it definitely says > "Mushroom Bank, Glossop Road" on the first census entry - maybe its just > an > error. Yes, the above all makes sense but the Glossop road bit is a mystery. Its amazing how families appear to be all mixed up. I wonder if you could look up another sheet on the 1861 census. I have the index which shows the following (again it could be one or two addresses): BEARDSHAW Charles C 29 1832 YKS Sheffield 3500 45F BEARDSHAW Maria V B 23 1838 IRL --- 3500 45F BEARDSHAW Albert 21 1840 YKS Sheffield 3500 45F BEARDSHAW Charles J P B 8 1853 YKS Sheffield 3500 45F BEARDSHAW Reginald M W M 1m YKS Attercliffe 3500 45F Again the households, relationships and occupations would be useful. Sorting this out may mean that I gain a new (distant)cousin.
