    1. 1861 census
    2. Hi List I was wondering is someone could answer a little puzzle I have with the 1861 census. Sheffield Archives list folios 2420 and 2421 [film nos. 246/K1/1 to 246/K1/2] and 3503-3513 for Rotherham. I have bought the census for [supposedly!] the whole of Yorkshire from S&N Genealogy but the CD’s start from folio RG9/3174. I was wondering where folios 2420 and 2421 fit in? Hope someone can explain.TIA Karen Lightowler Doncaster, South Yorkshire Researching the Sheffield Flood

    3. One child's experience of school was not too positive! Sheffield Independent 2nd June 1911 page5 The 12 year old boy of George Collier of 12 Clarence Street, Sheffield, whose disappearance on 28th April was announced by the Sheffield Independent has been discovered at Todmorden. The boy answering Colliers description was taken into custody for wandering abroad without a proper guardian and the Sheffield police authorities advised Mrs Collier to go over and see the lad who had given the name of Reed. She returned yesterday bringing her son with her looking as though he had had enough of his wandering life. He said that he had been roaming the country since his disappearance, and as a reason for running away from home said that he had been caned by his schoolmaster for going late. He had been late several times because he had been out delivering papers, his father being out of work. Glenn Piper researching PIPER-UK. Sheffield 1911 newspapers on cd/dvd. 3. Hi Could someone be kind enough to do a look-up for 1861 Census. My family came from Dukinfield, Cheshire after the 1851 Census. They stopped off at Barnsley where Samuel was born. They appeared in the Grimesthorpe area 1861, with the death of the mother 26.09.1861. As the census was 6-7th April 1861, It is possible the family are on the census. I was given the above death information by one of your research team. The family:- HENRY COOPER b: 31.01.1821 Manchester. m. 1840 A-U-L. RACHEL (TAYLOR) b.1821 Sheffield. d. 26.9.61 Grimesthorpe, Sheffield. Ref: MI's M78. St Thomas. (She was shown to be living at Baggaley. Brightside Bierlow ). Son:- JOHN b.1841 Dukinfield: (age 20) Son:- RICHARD b. 1842 Dukinfield: (age 19) Dau:- MARY ANNE b. 1844 Dukinfield: (age 17) Son:- JAMES b. 1845 Dukinfield: (age 16) Son:- THOMAS b. 1847 Dukinfield: (age 14) Son:- GEORGE b. 1849 Dukinfield: (age 12) Son:- ROBERT b. 1850 Dukinfield: (age 11) Dau:- MARY b. 1855 Dukinfield: (age 6) Dau:- JEMIMA b. 1856 Dukinfield: (age 5) Son:- SAMUEL b. 1859 Barnsley: (age 2) I hope that the 1861 Census will show them all together. The 1871 will be difficult, as they may be all split up ??? Regards Keith (Canada) (Fingers crossed)

    3. Hello everyone, I wonder if someone could point me in the right direction. I have a family who appear on the 1871 census in Sheffield..(RG10/4695 page 827 at 23 Earsham Street) George HARTLEY (b c1838) and Martha FELTRUP (b c1839) (married at Christ Church Pitsmoor, 22 June 1862) with their children Ernest Hartley Feltrup(b 11 Jan 1861) Frederick James Hartley(b 17 Jan 1863) Ada Alice Hartley(b 1867) Eliza Ann Hartley(c 1869) William Hartley(b 1871) I have just found them in Victoria Australia by 1877 when their daughter Kate was born. I suspect the whole family emigrated together. Does anyone know if there are emmigration records of people moving from England to Australia (or immigration records in Australia) and if so where might I consult them? Thanks as always. 3. Hi Tina, The Sheffield Family History Society recorded the majority of the monumental inscriptions at Wardsend Cemetery a few years ago. They are available to view at Sheffield Archives and at the office of the Hillsborough Community Development Trust at the Walled Garden in Hillsborough Park, Sheffield. As both these options aren't very practical for you in Kent, I'll have a look for you next time I'm in the Trust office(probably next week) and I'll contact you off list with my findings. 3. Adrienne, I think I have found him for you. I came across a Charles GREENWOOD, Age 22, living at 39 Valley Road, Norton. Norton is today part of Sheffield but was at that time part of North East Derbyshire. He is living with his brother John & wife (can't make out her name) and their son John. John the elder is listed as being born at Keighley, John's wife and son John are born in Sheffield and Charles is listed as being born in Oxenhope which is near to Keighley. I have also found the following Charles GREENWOOD's in Sheffield, Age: 19 (Coal carter) living with parents: Matilda GREENWOOD (widow) at 2 Ct. 1 Woodland Street (Parish of St. John's, Owlerton) Age: 26 (Steel Furnaceman) living with wife Harriet & children at 119 Walkley Street Age: 27 (Bricklayers Labourer) living as a Boarder with Stephen & Ellen BASHAM and family at 26 Ratcliffe Road, Ecclesall Age: 29 (Railway Drayman) living as a Boarder with Thomas & Elizabeth BAIGENT at 1/3 Cross Furness Street, St. Mary's Parish, Park District Age: 23 (Private/Yorkshire Regiment) born at: Stockton, Durham living at Hillsborough Barracks, Parish of St. John's, Owlerton) I looked at the 1881 Census and did find a 2 year old Charles GREENWOOD living at Hawkcliffe, Haworth which could be him 20 years earlier. If the 1901 info sounds promising let me know and I will send it to you off-list.
