    1. Re: Sheffield Watchmaker.
    2. Hi John, Brian Loomes book, 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' Vol 2, lists: BURRELL, George & J.C. Sheffield 1861-71 (Watchmakers). One or two other BURRELL's dotted around the UK, (Notts, London & Newark) and a John BURRELL in Beverley 1858. Otherwise nothing else. Local trade dirctories and census returns may give more info on them & their business, as often watchamkers lived and worked on their premises. If you can have sent to me some photo's of the watch movement, I may be able to tell you more about it! Small files sizes though please (no bigger than 100Kb - I'm still on a crap BT dial-up PAYG internet access). The watch was probably cracking on for being an antique when your wife's Gt-uncle got hold of it! Hope this helps. Kind regards John Woolsey (Bridlington, East Yorks). ----- Original Message ----- From: "johnelmes" <johnelmes@ozemail.com.au> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2005 1:15 AM Subject: Sheffield Watchmaker. > On a recent trip to Victoria here in Australia one of my wife's cousins > produced a fob watch that had belonged to their grandfather, William > Reginald Smith. 3. Hi All A number of the "Surname Interest address confirmation" messages I sent out have returned a spam verification message link for me to click on to confirm my mail to you is not spam. Unfortunately, those of you who use these spam control programs should have already enabled not only list related addressed mail to be delivered to you but also my personal addressed mail without my needing to click on these verification links for you (list admins for all lists may need to make contact at any time while you are subscribed to the list without the need to verify our messages). You already know list and list admin messages are not spam related. I have no intentions of clicking on any of these spam verification messages . The onus is on yourselves to allow delivery to you. The message is simple, allow list and admin messages to reach you or your interest details will be removed and your subscribed address will also be auto unsubbed due to failure to accept delivery. Once again thanks to those who have responded since my last post with updates for both addresses and other details. I will add them to the site asap. I'll shortly (in a day or two) be posting a list of addresses. Watch out for it because your old (and possibly still active) address just might be on the list. If no updates for these inactive or bouncing addresses are received then all related details will be removed for them very soon afterwards. 1. re the surname interest webpage
    2. SheffGens
    3. Hi All Have you a surname interest on the Surname Interest webpage ? If so then do please read on ................ or you could have your interest details removed from the webpage. Because I am receiving more and more frequent complaints from users who are failing to make contact with people who have surname interests on the surnames interest webpage, and because a check of addresses is long overdue .................................... Everyone who has a "surname interest" on the websites surname interests webpage has now been sent an email message to check for any bounce from the contact address they supplied. (appologies to those who have had two or more messages sent to them but some servers rejected my messages, so I had to reduce the number of recipients) I am somewhat surprised to have so far received a bounce from over 70 addresses for one reason or another. The majority of them seem to be addresses which are no longer used. Many of them are not subscribed any longer or have not been subscribed to the list. There are however, quite a few who I think are still subscribed to this list but are now subscribed with a different address. Any address that's returned (bounced) a message for temporary reasons such as being over quota or simular I will try and contact again after the holidays. If I still receive a bounce I will remove all interest details connected to their contact address. Anyone who has not received a message but has a surname interest listed on the webpage I would suggest you contact me as soon as possible to confirm your address is active and in use. Your address may have bounced for an unknown server reason without your knowledge. All other addresses which have bounced will have ALL surname interests details connected to the address removed any time after next weekend if no updated address has been submitted. All who have received the message please just delete it as your address will obviously not have return a bounce. My thanks to those who have already made contact to update their address or to request other names to be added. I'll make the changes after I've weeded out all the inactive addresses. Can I remind all who wish to make use of the Interest webpage that the onus is on yourselves to keep your contact address updated and active at all times. Please let me know if you change your address. I am always happy to make the alterations for you. Remember, the surname interest webpage listing is of no use whatsoever if users are not able to contact you because you havent an active contact address.. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Hunt" <stephen.hunt24@btinternet.com> To: <exy@powerup.com.au>; <frank@cyberscotia.com> Sent: Monday, March 28, 2005 5:07 PM Subject: William and Frances PERKINTON Hi Eric / Frank, - this is a bit of a long shot but i was surfing the net when i can across some correspondence going back to 2002 & 2004 on the Eng - Sheffield web where you have all be sharing info on the name PERKINTON from Sheffield. You'd posted the following from the 1861 census PERKINTON William 45 1815 Sheffield YKS PERKINTON Frances 43 1817 Sheffield YKS PERKINTON Charlotte 15 1845 Sheffield YKS PERKINTON George 14 1846 Sheffield YKS PERKINTON John- 13 1847 Sheffield YKS PERKINTON Sarah 3 1857 Sheffield Now the strange thing is i'm tracing: Charlotte Perkinton born abt 1867 Sheffield William Perkinton born abt 1842 Sheffield Frances Perkinton born abt 1844 Sheffield - same names, different time period. Also my William Perkinton (b 1842) is a table blade forger (listed in the 1871-1901) which i believe is the same occupation as the William Perkinton that you cite, as i've got a copy of the 1871 census for your William. Have you been able to link my William (b 1842) with your William (b 1815)? - i'm hoping they are father and son but i haven't been able to prove this yet, and i was really hoping they would appear together on the 1861 census (my William being 18 years old) but your posting has shown this not to be the case. Can you help? You haven't been able to trace the 1851 census of this family have you? and PS how did somebody living in Australia have links to the Perkintons in Sheffield? Hi Steve, This may not be proof positive but I have it on the authority of a professional genealogist that William b. 1842 is the son of William b. 1816. William b. May 20 1816 married Frances Harland b. 1817 in Sept 1842 in Sheffield. They had the following children William b. 1843 Charlotte b. 1845, George b. 1846, John b. 1848 and Sarah b. 1857. William married Frances Jaques b. 1844 in Sheffield in 1864 at St Johns Park Sheffield. They had the following children. Sarah E. b. 1865, Charlotte b. 1867, William b. 1870, Herbert b. 1871 and George b. 1875. That should cover the 3 people you are interested in. Unfortunately I havent yet come across an 1851 census entry to give proof positive. Perhaps someone out there on the Sheffield site could help ? I come from the other side of the family. William b. 1816 lived with his brother Joshua in 1841 and I am a descendent of him. Where do you fit in ? Cheers Frank -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. You don't happen to know if there was a quarry nearby do you - he, and his brother, were in the quarrying business? Hi John Not in the immediate neighbourhood but there was one at Ringinglow about 2/3 miles away. I think it is still working today. Ringinglow is a little village on the hill above Fulwood if you are looking at a map. To get there from the cottages you would have had a walk across the fields and up a very steep field called Jacob's ladder or a longer way round by road. They may have been employed elsewhere but that is the one in the immediate neighbourhood. Small quarries sprung up even in the corner of a field to build local houses but I think that is the most likely. 3. Hi All From today and for the next few days I'll be making a long overdue check for any "no longer in use" address/es which accompany " the Interest Names on the "Surname Interests" webpage. If you have any name/s on the Surname Interests webpage then please make sure you have an "in use" address accompanying your interest name/s details. I will update any address that's sent to me prior to my receiving a rerturned mail (bounce) for that address. Surname Interest details with an address that appears to be no longer in use (returns a bounce) will be deleted from the listing after April 1st which means you will then need to re-submit all interest name details along with any new updated address. In 1871 and 1881 he lived in Nether Hallam. I would also be grateful if anyone has access to the 1851 census which was before his marriage and perhaps give a clue to his parents.
