    1. 1861 census lookup request - Alfred Armitage & family
    2. Carol was able to find this family in the 1851 census. Based on her info, I believe they are: On Andrew Street in Brightside in 1861 (family was living on Andrew Street at Alfred’s daughter’s marriage in 1858 and at his 1865 Sheffield Flood claim and Alfred's widow lived on Andrew Street in 1871 census) Alfred Armitage approx. age 51 born in Stannington, razor grinder Mary Armitage approx. age 45 born in Bradfield Henry Armitage approx. age 27 born in Stannington, razor grinder Thomas Armitage approx. age 25 born in Stannington, razor grinder (unknown) Armitage (f) approx. age 17-21 born in Sheffield (if not married and out of household) (from hard-to-read 1851 census entry – Effingham St. Sheffield Park) John Armitage approx. age 13 born in Sheffield (from hard-to-read 1851 census entry) William Armitage approx. age 13 born in Sheffield (from hard-to-read 1851 census entry) I would have put this request on the new 1841indexers message board, but I am having trouble getting setup as a member (Ian and I have been working on the problem). 2. Hello all, I have a Charles Cavill, died Oct-Dec 1881 aged 72 at Eccleshall Bierlow, I would like to know whether he left a will, he was listed as an annuitant for the last few censuses before he died and in his younger life was a 'gentleman farmer' so it has been suggested that he may have had some land or an investment to leave to someone... I just don't have a clue how I would find out - any suggestions? Thanks Amanda Cavell Liverpool

    3. Hello, Does anyone have access to the 1871 Sheffield Census? I have THOMAS SCHOFIELD, a carter, and ANN SCHOFIELD at 27 Andrew Lane, Brightside Bierlow in 1870. By 1881, Thomas seems to have died. I am hoping that the 1871 census will give his age and place of birth, and others in the household. I would be VERY grateful for any help. 3. Hello List, Can I just begin by saying a huge thank-you to all that have replied to my JENKINSON / JINKINSON / TINKINSON query this evening with special thanks to Karen Lightowler and Tracey (in Leicestershire) who I think I can safely say (95% certain) have put me on the right track to finding this elusive family. Tracey kindly provided me with (from the 1881 Census) Richard TINKINSON, aged: 18, a Trammer Coal Miner, born: Stannington and living with grandparents John & Ruth MARSHALL at Hunshelf/Deepcar. I have now found this John & Ruth MARSHALL in the 1841, 1851 and 1871 Census records and believe that my Michael JENKINSON (or whatever other surname variant he uses) may have married one of John & Ruth MARSHALL's daughters, possibly their daughter Mary (b: c1842) which would make her approx 20 years of age when Richard was born in 1862. From the info that Karen gave I now have Michael JINKINSON, age 25, Mine Labourer (living as a lodger) with a Stonemason in the 1861 Census. It would appear that Michael had a change of career after living with John COULDWELL and took up the trade as a Stonemason/Cutter, his son Richard later taking up his father's original career as Miner. I think I now have to search for a marriage of a Michael JINK-JENK or TINKINSON to a MARSHALL female c1861/2 which will hopefully get me going again. I have sent for the birth certificate for Richard JENKINSON born March Qtr. 1862 so hopefully this will give me the correct parents names. With regard to Elaine's message below, the marriage certificate is definitely JENKINSON, both Richard and Michael and the 1891 & 1901 Census records are all down as JENKINSON. Richard's daughter Mary Ellen was my G.Grandmother and her name is always listed as JENKINSON in every document I have ever seen including her marriage certificate to my G.Grandfather, William CRAWSHAW at Wadsley in 1906. Another pointer (although not cast in stone) that Michael's wife may have been a MARSHALL is that Richard & Harriet JENKINSON named their first daughter Ruth and their second daughter Mary (my G.Grandmother), did Richard name them for his grandmother Ruth and mother Mary?..............I'll have to wait for the certificate to see. Thanks to all once again.....................the best list on Rootsweb has come up trumps again. 3. Hello Karen & List, Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to stay calm here and not get over excited but I think that what you've given me below looks very very promising indeed. Having said that, I've just been searching on my 1841 and 1851 Bradfield Census CD's expecting to find a Michael JINKINSON (born c1836) but cannot find the man (or any JINKINSON's) in Bradfield in any of these census years. I've just been searching the LDS site for his name and the checking the other way round on the Hugh Wallis pages under Bradfield & Stannington and still no JINKINSON's have come to light. I've heard people talk about brick walls before but I think this JINKINSON/JENKINSON family have borrowed a redundant section of the Berlin Wall to hide behind. If there's anyone else out there that can elaborate on the info that Karen has given below I would be most grateful. 1. JENKINSON in 1861 - Stannington, Bradfield ?
    2. Jeremy Crawshaw
    3. Hello List, Just thought I would share my small misfortune with you all just to reinforce how important it is to check every possible source available before assuming that a name you come across is a member your family, and after six years of family history research how I should have known better. I've today received the marriage certificate for my 2nd G.Grandfather/Grandmother, Richard JENKINSON & Harriet HORSFIELD, they married on 6th August 1883 at St. Nicholas' Church, High Bradfield. I've had the GRO ref for this certificate for at least three years now but never bothered to send for it until last week. After reading the certificate and seeing the first name of Richard's father I'm now wishing I had sent for it three years ago, as this certificate has put an enormous spanner in my JENKINSON family tree as I've been researching the wrong JENKINSON family for all of this time. I had previously found Richard & Harriet JENKINSON living at Wadsley on the 1891 & 1901 Census' but when I came to search the 1881 Census the only Richard JENKINSON I could find was a Richard JENKINSON aged 15 (Coal Miner) and living at Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham with his siblings and parents Wellard & Leah JENKINSON, Wellard was also a Coal Miner. I knew from the 1891 & 1901 Census records that my Richard was born c1862 (Stannington, Bradfield) and was a Coal Miner/Hewer so when I saw the 1881 information above (and couldn't find another Richard born around the same time who was a Coal Miner) I decided that possibly the age of the Thorpe Hesley Richard could be wrong as this would make this Richard born c1866. With the help of others that I contacted I managed to get back down this JENKINSON family line to c1650 and now this is all in vain, sob, sob. From the marriage certificate I now know that my Richard's father was called Michael JENKINSON, occupation: Stonecutter. I have this evening been searching Ancestry.Co.UK and cannot find my Richard or his father Michael on either the 1871 or 1881 Census records which is a complete mystery to me as I know I should be able to find Richard and possibly Michael (assuming he hadn't died before either of these census years). Would it be possible for SKS who has access to the 1861 Census to see if they could find my 3rd G.Grandfather, Michael JENKINSON please? Obviously, because I don't have any census information to go on I can't give any indication as to his age or birth year, or even a place of birth, I only have his name and occupation (Stonecutter). I have just found a birth reference for what I believe will be my Richard (March Qtr. 1862 - Wortley Vol: 9c, Page: 193) and I'm sending for that from the GRO this evening. Hopefully this will be the correct Richard and show his father as Michael. Any help from the 1861 or earlier census records (or suggestions on how to proceed from here) would be greatly appreciated. 2. Hi List I just thought I would let you all know that I have today received a copy of “The Forgotten Flood” DVD produced by Phil Parkin and I have to admit I think it is fabulous! Phil has captured this tragic event in a wonderfully interesting, educational and fascinating way. His use of old film clips, original flood photographs and modern day shots has been done very professionally. The narration by Rony Robinson is particularly good too. It is a wonderful keep sake for anyone interested in Sheffield’s history [and particularly the flood which, as some of you will already know, is a subject I am totally obsessed about!!]. I also make an appearance – a starring role – actually you get a quick glimpse of the back of my head [my best view] but if you blink you will miss it. Suits me though as I hate seeing myself on film but at least I am there, captured forever. If anyone is interested in buying a copy you can get it from Phil at: VERYMUCHSO PRODUCTIONS 8 STRETTON ROAD, SHEFFIELD. S11 8UQ. 3. Hi everyone Is it possible for SKS to look up the following for me: I am trying to find the marriage of William ROCH and Selina TOWERS. Their eldest childs birth was registered in June 1861. I also wish to know when William died or a burial if poss. I know this was before the 1871 census as Selina is a widow then. Their youngest child was 2 at the time of the 1871 census. I therefore assume he died somewhere between late 1867 and 1871. The surname ROCH may also have been spelt ROCHE or possible ROCK. All help is very much appreciated.
