    3. hi gordon and list he is a john TRAVIS aged 43 stone mason living treeton yorkshire he is on the 1851 census 2343 section 4 page 17 that i got from stepping stones.i cant get a copy of it to the list as i dont know how to cut them down. useless i am. i know he was born yorkshire and all his children were born in treeton as i have all the babtism dates for them. and so i know he is the right person just could not fathom out were he came from, but he came from what looks like coustie or couslie in yorkshire.i have not been able to find him on the 1871 census on ancestry he could have died but i had found a buriel at treeton for a john travis 1877 aged 71.so he should be alive for the 1871 census. carol slater from sheffield SheffGens <SheffGens@blueyonder.co.uk> wrote: Hi Carol Can you say where you found the the name. ie. which census and the piece and page # so I can have a look at it. 3. Hi Diana, The GRO indexes are your best bet have you tried those.......... The Marriage for Rosina Horton is listed on freebmd's have you tried there as well. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ for your Ashforth's?....................... She (Tomasina) isn't listed on the 1881 census....................... William Proctor.......................I can only pull up 5 of them up on the 1901 census as being in Yorkshire. and the Sheffield area.........his occupation would help to go further...... NO Tomasina Proctor showing up on the 1901 census either....... Sorry about that but there seems to be a few loose ends here..... Kindest regards. 1. Robert FLINT b.1810 where?
    2. Liz
    3. Hi everyone I am looking for Robert FLINT and family in the 1841, 51 or 61 censuses. In 1871 he says he was born in Sheffield - living with his wife, one son and a granddaughter. He was a Tailor. In 1881 he says he was born in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire - he's now a widower living with a son and family. Robert died 11 Jun 1886 and is buried in City Road Cemetery...think the family took half the prominent plots there which was very useful to me! He's not been transcribed yet in the 1841 census, hence my request. This is the family as I know them: Robert FLINT - wife Ann born Sheffield. Children: Jonathan b 1836 Amelia b.1838 Walter b.1842 Edward Gore b.1844 Robert b.1848, and Abraham b.1850. Any sightings much appreciated. Cheers LIZ www.btinternet.com/~e.newbery Penzance, Cornwall

    3. Hi All SURNAME INTERESTS The Surname Interests webpage has now been updated 60 inactive addresses - 189 related surname details - all deleted 34 new surname details - added Please remember that in order for the surname interest webpage to be of use, its vital that all who have submitted surnames keep their contact address up to date and active. If interested visitors and users of the webpage are unable to make contact then it makes the webpage of no use at all to those interested people. I keep getting reminded of the above every time I receive a message from some annoyed and frustrated user whos tried and failed to make contact on numerous occassions before then venting their frustrations out on me.. LIST MESSAGES I receive messages now and again asking if I would again remind subscribers to include explanatory text in response messages. I must admit it is a pet hate of mine simply because I am one of those who suffer from a short memory. The problem still exists no matter how many times I include the request in these reminders messages. There are however now only a very few who are guilty of omitting a brief extract so the message is getting through. Would subscribers please include a small "text content reminder" (a portion of text from the message content to which they are responding) to their messages. Doing so helps remind other subscribers, which thread your message is responding to. Please DO NOT rely on the "Subject line" text to act as a reminder to the message thread, as the same "Subject line" text is often used for different message threads. Also its usual for list subscribers to empty their list message folder regularly and are therefore, (without a brief reminder text), unable to remember the thread without having to access and search through the list archives. After all, it does only take a couple of seconds to copy an explanatory sentence or two from the original message and paste it into your response message. MESSAGE SIGNATURES and SURNAMES IN MESSAGES Please remember to always add your place of residence (ie. City or County or Country, etc) along with your name at the end of each list posting. Knowing whether or not you reside in or are local to Sheffield has a significance on any advice offered by fellow subscribers willing to respond to your query. Adding your signature also makes for a much more friendler and acceptable message. Typing your research "SURNAMEs" in capital letters (UPPERCASE) in your messages makes it "kinder to the eye" and really does make for easier browsing of the message. WEBSITE Eng-Sheffield mailing list has its own website "Sheffield Genealogy Family & Social History" (click on the url address at the end of this message). The website is continually updated and will be of interest to most list subscribers. There are links to other useful websites and webpages that have information of interest not only for Sheffield and surrounding areas but also other far reaching areas. Many answers to the queries asked onlist can be found by making use of the website and visiting the links to other websites. Alternatively, answers to your particular query may already exist in the list archives, (click either of the archive button links on the website hompage). Recent list messages can also be found by browsing or searching through the list archives. UPDATES/BACKUPS Remember to check regularly for update patches for your anti virus, firewall and other security programs and also access Windows Update regularly for Microsoft Updates. Its always a good idea to make backups of all your data (especially your research and URLs etc) either to disk or hard copy in case of any computer problem. The dreaded computer crash can and does happen and could easily happen to you. 1. a day in 1911

    3. Hi All This day in 1911 (actually, yesterday in 1911) Saturday 1st April.................. "Hear all Sides" (equivalent to the present day Sheffield Star "Letters" page) The Census and Unemployment Sir, - It seems to me that a great opportunity for gauging the exact amount of unemployment in the country has been missed. (note instruction 3 as follows): "If out of work or discouraged at the time of the census, the usual occupation must be stated" Now, unless persons unemployed distinctly register themselves as such, the census returns will not be correct. It is most important that the true position of unemployment should be known so that the figures may noy not be juggled with by interested persons. - ------------------------------ and for the Horological minded Career of Well Known Sheffield Watchmaker (a brief extract) We announce the death of Mr George Burrell, watchmaker, a native of Collingham near Newark died yesterday at 52 Marlborough Road, Sheffield aged 84. Mr Burrell a well known clock and watchmaker used to relate that he was able to make two grandfather clocks in a fortnight. Mr Burrell left Collingham in 1851 to come to Messrs Bright & Sons, High Street, Sheffield as their foreman. On Messrs Bright transferring their establishment to Scarbro he started a business of his own at 5 King Street once a resort of James Montgomery the poet. In 1869 he devised a 3/4 plate movement of great simplicity and manufactured many hundreds at 5 King Street. These watches were specially made for the working man and excited the admiration of the late Mr E D Johnson, vice president of the Horological Institute. Mr Burrell was the first to introduce "adjusted keyless watches" into Sheffield. In 1879 he introduced into Sheffield the methods of synchronising and controlling clocks by electricity - still in use today (1911) by the Parish Church clock. Mr Burrell ceased work only two years previously at the age of 82. He leaves seven sons and three daughters to mourn his loss.
