Source information: RG10/4441 Registration district: Bradford Sub-registration district: North Bierley ED, institution, or vessel: 13 Folio: 45 Page: 35 There were other siblings Frederick LATHROPE 15, Miranda LATHROPE 11, and Harriet ELLIS 3 - there were all at Acre Street, North Bierley. 2. Dear list, please forgive the previous request. I was having a bad ear ache and posted my message too soon. I'm so embarrassed. Here is the request I did want to post: Could SKS with access to parish registers for Bradfield or Nether Hallam help find the marriage of Sarah Lathrope to Farewell Bills about 1870-71? GRO indexes for marriages have been searched several times with no positive results. 1 June 1870, child born to Sarah Lathrope (no father), residence Daniel Hill, Nether Hallam 1871 census: Sarah and husband Farewell Bills, residence 14 Langsett Rd, Nether Hallam. (piece 4662, ED 12, fol 153, page 41, St. Philip's ecc district) 22 May 1872, child (now with Bills surname) dies at Castle Bent, Bradfield; buried St. Nicholas, Bradfield. It would appear the marriage took place between the child's birth in June, 1870, and the census in April, 1871. 1873 & 1875: Bills children born Castles Bent, Bradfield; subsequent children born (1877-1885) Nether Hallam. 1881 census: Grammar St., Nether Hallam. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated." What a great group, Hugzz, Dinnie from southern California

    1. Census Stories
    2. SheffGens
    3. Hi All Extracts from the Sheffield Daily Independent cd newspaper www.cpiper.freeserve.co.uk This week in 1911 Census Stories - Some funny incidents Weary census officers trudged around Sheffield yesterday collecting the thousands of schedules which were distributed last week. It was not a particular thrilling time what with the bewildering questions of the ignorant, and the pertness of well to do snobs, who endeavoured to make the officials lot as difficult as possible. The latter type of people appeared to imagine that the enumerators were entirely responsible for the census being taken, and treated the officials with suspicion that was amusing to the observer. In many instances the enumerators were told to "call again". It is a an astonishing fact that there is still hostility in Sheffield against the taking of the census. One old gentleman, living not far from the University, for example, was labouring under the delusion that the primary object of the census was for taxation. When the enumerator handed him the paper he was full of wrath and flung it in the fire. He warned the census officer that he would never fill it up. The enumerators have discovered that the delicate question as to a lady's age is not confined to whiskered jokes and funny stories. The lot of some these lady's is so happy that they appear to lose count of the number of years that pass by. Some only feel about five years older since the last census, and they calmly put on the schedule a figure about five years in advance of their last census. The column as to infirmities appears to have puzzled many. "My wife drinks: is that an infirmity ?" asked one man. "In some cases" said the officer who was collecting in the Crofts area, "the children have filled in the forms for their parents, the latter being unable to read or write, but of course supply the information. So much difficulty was experienced in getting papers from the better class houses in Sharrow that one census officer only secured ten papers in an hour and a half. Men who have been married twice and have in thier homes children of both marriages have been somewhat concerned when filling up their forms. As one man expressed it "I have to give exact particulars as to the period of the present marriage, which happens to be ten years, and in the other column I have to state that of my five children living in the house one is twenty years of age and another is eighteen years, and I cannot find any place in which to put an explanation". "I'll not argue the point with you my boy" exclaimed one collector of schedules at Nether Edge, when he found his way barred by a savage looking bull dog. "Work depends on weather" wrote one man on his form. The enumerator wanted something more definate. "Well, my last jobs have all been snow shifting", replied the head of the family. Some little men with big wives, and some big men with little wives, have had great satisfaction for once in a way of being able to declare themselves the head of the family. One amusing feature about the census so far as Sheffield is concerned has been the "literal" interpretaion of the time the papers should be filled in. Scores of people sat up until midnight and commenced to fill the papers in on the stroke of twelve. A proud father in Ecclesall who had a baby a few hours old, calmly explained on the census form that the baby was single and not married. A Sheffield parent who should have known better, described his three year old son as a "mischief brewer" The keepers of common lodging houses in the city had an unenviable time in filling up forms. Many men were particularly foolish, thinking there was something sinister about the inquiries. The wags gave all kind of names. One man declared that he was the Earl Fitzwilliam, and another insisted he was Lloyd George in disguise. -------------------------------- Maybe some food for thought there somewhere. They are all born Sheffield. Sarah ROWLAND (wid) Age 40 Thomas ROWLAND (son) Age 15 John ROWLAND (son) Age 15 Caroline ROWLAND (dau) Age 10 Matilda ROWLAND (dau) Age 5 Wilfred ROWLAND (son) Age 5 I know that Caroline had an illegitimate child Eliza Catherine ROWLAND born 19 May 1846 also Sheffield. If anyone can find the marriage for Sarah as this would give the husband and Sarah maiden name. Caroline must have married later if anyone can find a marriage or find her on the 1851 or 1861 census then it will help narrow the field for searching for a marriage. All help is very much appreciated. Regards Karen Cogan West Yorks

    2. Jeremy Crawshaw
    3. Hello List, Just thought I would update the folk who kindly helped me with the JENKINSON info recently. As I said in my earlier messages, I sent for the birth certificate for the Richard JENKINSON that I found born in the March Qtr 1862 and I have received the certificate this morning. Good news, it's the right one and the information that Karen Lightowler and Tracey (Leicestershire) sent me was correct. Also, the assumptions that I had arrived at (based on Karen & Tracey's info) was also correct, see my original snippet below, "Tracey kindly provided me with (from the 1881 Census) Richard TINKINSON, aged: 18, a Trammer Coal Miner, born: Stannington and living with grandparents John & Ruth MARSHALL at Hunshelf/Deepcar. I have now found this John & Ruth MARSHALL in the 1841, 1851 and 1871 Census records and believe that my Michael JENKINSON (or whatever other surname variant he uses) may have married one of John & Ruth MARSHALL's daughters, possibly their daughter Mary (b: c1842) which would make her approx 20 years of age when Richard was born in 1862". Richard is the son of Michael JENKINSON and I was also correct in my assumption that he would probably have been the son of John & Ruth MARSHALL's daughter Mary, see details of certificate below, When & where born: 27th January 1862 Name: Richard Name & surname of father: Michael JENKINSON Name & maiden surname of mother: Mary JENKINSON formerly MARSHALL Occupation of father: Miner for Water Comp. Sig/Res of informant: the mark of Mary JENKINSON, mother, Stannington, Bradfield This little snippet for Karen Lightowler, Karen, as Michael JENKINSON is listed as a Miner for Water Company and the year on the certificate is 1862, is it reasonably safe to assume that he would probably been involved in the construction of the Bradfield dams, possibly Dale Dyke? So all in all a great result thanks in particular to Karen & Tracey and many others who all offered advice. Just got to get the research going now on my newly found JENKINSON's and a whole new MARSHALL family. 1. Re: [SHEFF] JENKINSON - Stannington, Bradfield
    2. Hi Jeremy Great to hear the certificate has helped proved your assumptions. As for this snippet “as Michael JENKINSON is listed as a Miner for Water Company and the year on the certificate is 1862, is it reasonably safe to assume that he would probably been involved in the construction of the Bradfield dams, possibly Dale Dyke?” well, yes, it would seem likely and needless to say, it has piqued my interest as, according to Samuel Harrison [journalist at the time of the flood and author of the book A Complete History of the Great Flood at Sheffield], a man called JENKINSON died in the flood and he tells us “A great many dead bodies were found in this neighbourhood. In these gardens were a number of small cottages, some of them used merely as tool houses, and others occupied by the artisans who rented the garden plots. In one of these houses, only one story high, lived a man named Jetty, his wife, and three children. They were all drowned, and in fact had no chance of escape. In another garden Thomas Elston, his wife, and a child, were drowned. A house occupied by a man named Jenkinson was partly destroyed, and it is supposed that he lost his life”. Despite this the name Jenkinson does not appear in the list of victims produced by Chief Constable John Jackson and later reproduced in Harrison’s book. A search of the NBI showed only one male adult in 1864 that of William JENKINSON aged 47 buried on 20th March 1864 at St Mary’s Church in Sheffield but the name actually turned out to be JINKINSON. Having purchased his death certificate I was somewhat disappointed to see that the cause of death was not drowning. William died on 14th March 1864 at Hermitage Lane Ecclesall Bierlow of “Angina Pectoris” [medical term for chest pain or discomfort due to coronary heart disease]. The death was registered by Jane Jinkinson of Court 29 Pearl Street but the only entry for her in the 1861 census was living at ‘ Sunderland Street Bk’ with husband John and four sons. An account in the newspaper ‘The Doncaster, Nottingham & Lincoln Gazette Supplement’ dated Friday March 18th 1864 says ‘A man named Jenkinson who lived near Neepsend Lane’. In the 1861 census Oliver and Mary Ann JENKINSON were living at Neepsend Lane with 8 children and a grand son. Karen Hill has since proved that Oliver was her ancestor and it seems unlikely that anyone in Oliver’s family died in the flood. So, after all this, I tend to think reports at the time of the flood stating, “a house occupied by a man named Jenkinson was partly destroyed, and it is supposed that he lost his life” was actually incorrect but I do hope someone can prove me wrong! Thanks again Jeremy Best Regards Karen Lightowler Doncaster, South Yorkshire Researching the Sheffield Flood
