    2. Karen Cogan
    3. Hi everyone I have been trying to find my 3x great grandparents William and Selina ROCH (nee TOWERS) on the 1861 census and haven't found them. I have just received the birth certificate of their oldest child Selina she was born on 6th May 1861 her father Williams profession is described as Innkeeper and the residence of the informant who was her mother just states West Bar Sheffield. Please could someone look in the 1861 census to see if they are there? - either the image or piece & folio numbers would be great. I'm afraid I've never heard of it and haven't been able to find it - is it an area of Sheffield? Note the name I've found on other census's has been spelt ROCH, ROCK, ROCHE, ROACH, ROACHE. Thank-you in anticipation as I'm stuck at this generation for the ROCH family. All help is very much appreciated. Regards Karen Cogan Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire

    3. Hi Tony, Thanks for the info but I have already seen this. There is a photo in the book on Beighton of her gravestone and the cottage where she lived at the back of the churchyard, also a picture of her daughter Matilda Boswell and other family. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any further information about them. I have also looked on the internet without success. I thought that if someone had the 41 Derbyshire census, it might name others in her family, although not much more that, I know. Thanks from Carol, Sheffield

    3. The claim for damage to the Old Park Silver Mill has been transcribed at the Sheffield Flood Claims site - Claim 6397 The SFCA site has been enhanced; I think in preparation for the addition of maps showing the location of the claim. Over 7,000 claims are now recorded. I have an interest in silver rolling as my 3g-grandfather, William Naylor, died 1843 was a silver roller at the Sheaf Rolling Mill, Clough Lane and Bramall Lane. He apparently lived at the mill as the family address is given as Sheaf Rolling Mill on the 1841 census. Thanks to David Yates for posting this interesting information. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    2. carol cooper
    3. Hi List, Does anyone have the 41 census for Derbyshire. If so, could you look up the census record for Lucretia Smith who lived in Beighton please. This was a family of Gypsies who lived in a cottage behind St Mary's church. She died in 1844 and was known as the Queen of the Gypsies. Her daughter was Matilda Boswell. Any information welcome. This is for a writers workshop project that I am doing. TIA, Carol, Sheffield

    1. Re: [SHEFF] GRANDMOTHER; CAROLINE LYDIA SCOTT BUT KNOWN AS CAROLINE LYDIA PAISLEY IN 1919
    2. Hugh Waterhouse
    3. hello Elizabeth, This may complicate matters !... The 1919-20 White's Directory for Sheffield has the following entry: 583 Penistone Rd ARCHER Mrs Caroline L midwife There are no PAISLEYs or PISLEYs in this directory. There are some PASLEYs including: William Hy PASLEY 79 Countess Road engraver This is near St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane - a long way from Penistone Rd. The usefullness of the electoral registers may be limited for the following reasons: No electoral registers were compiled in Sheffield between the volumes for 1914/15 and 1920. The right to vote was subject to a property qualification (which could include the rented property as well as ownership) so that there was only one vote per household. Women only appear where they are heads of household. Caroline could appear if she was living on her own for part of this period, but it won't be possible to link her with William this way (unless, for example, they were living in adjacent properties !). It would be possible to check the address in Penistone Road in the electoral rolls for the years 1907-1915 and 1920. If no relevant names are found then some other information may be needed to locate at least William, because there is no name index. Other directories may help. A couple of things I am not clear about... Is SCOTT her maiden name or her married name ? (was she in fact married to your grandfather?). Similarly, is MACE the married name of her sister ? You say she died in the Union Infirmary. Was that Sheffield Union or Ecclesall Union ? (the city was covered by two unions). Have you looked for a possible newspaper report of the inquest? 1. Where is Todwick?
    2. Colin Hinson
    3. Hi Margaret, Welcome back to Genealogy. To answer your question as to "Where is Todwick": rather than "hand you the fish on a plate", here's how you go fishing (at least for any place in Yorkshire: Go to the Genuki Yorkshire main page (URL in my signature), and take any of the links to "Where is it in Yorkshire". When you arrive on that page, there's a bit of explanation for you to read, and then there's a list of initial letters of places. Take the relevant letter's link (T for instance <g>), and it will take you to the list of all (or at least most) of the places in Yorkshire beginning with that letter. Those places in blue (or whatever you have your link colour set to) are the Ancient parishes. Find your place, click on the link and it will take you to the relevant Ancient parish page where you will find a description of the place and its location. You will also find on the main Genuki Yorkshire page a heading of "Maps" (among lots of other headings that may be of interest). Under the maps heading you will find a link to a detailed map of Yorkshire which you can download. This shows most of the places listed within the "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages. Make sure that you read the bit on the top right, as it explains what all the colour coding of the marker dots means. Best wishes, Colin Hinson In the village of Blunham in Bedfordshire U.K. Webmaster for the Genuki Yorkshire pages: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ Rare Yorkshire Books on CD: http://cdroms.blunham.com/ Hunter's Hallamshire (Sheffield), etc. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dear LIst Members. My name is Margaret, and I live in New Hampshire in the States. I took a couple of years off from my research but am trying to get back into it. I used to belong to this list way back, and it seemed a lot busier then. Anyway, this is my problem: my ancestor, Thomas WINDOW was (according to his military discharge record) born in Tickhill, Yorkshire in 1784. I have not been able to find any record of his birth, but the IGI shows births of Richard WiINDOW in 1807, and William WINDOW in 1810.in Tickhill. The father of these two was John WINDOW, and there was a John WINDOW born in 1777 in Todwick, Yorkshire. I am speculating that Richard and William are the sons of thisJohn, and this John could be a sibling to my Thomas. whose first two sons were Richard and John. Can anybody tell me where Todwick is in relation to Tickhill? Thanks for any help Regards Margaret..

Many thanks to both Carol & Martin for the details of the 1851 census :D Carol: Yes, I'd already seen the 1841 index, which was why I was surprised to find a son, John, on the 1851 census - they had a son called John baptised in 1818 according to the IGI, presumably he died. Any offers on the 1861 census? Thanks - Shelagh
