    3. Hi everyone, I can't seem to find anything before 1881 on one Burton RUTHERFORD in Sheffield. He was born c1854 and married Matilda Severn BUXTON (born c1853) in Jun 1874. I was hoping to find him on the 1871 census but I can't seem to find him, I thought with a name like that he would stand out !! If anyone could help I would be greatful. I am trying to find his parents or Matilda's father (her mother was called Matilda) Thanks Lisa __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Plan great trips with Yahoo! 2. Dear Listers and Submitters, Many of you very kindly thank me for keeping this list, but I assure you, your thanks should most properly go to Colin Hinson whose infinite patience with my "goof-ups" keeps the list going! Unfortunately, I do not have a record of changes to email addresses that were submitted between Easter and the 4th of April. So very, very humbly, covered in sackcloth and ashes, could everyone who asked me to change their email addresses between those dates, please check your entries. If there is no change, please re-send me your OLD and your NEW email address. Nuff said! Below is a list of the many new submissions since April 4th. May they bring you lots of luck! 2. Hugh Waterhouse
    3. hello Jay, sorry, Doncaster is altogether elsewhere. South St Park runs North/South from Broad St to Norfolk Road. This is not far to the east of the River Sheaf and the Railway. From a 1919/20 directory, Court 3 was about half way between Anson st and Low St, on the eastern side of South St, quite near the top (ie the Broad St end). This is also not far from St John's Church, Park, but I cannot find Charlotte in the NBI file for this church. 'Park' is in the name of the street to distinguish it from South St Moor, which is now simply 'The Moor'. He has always been an associate of thieves, and has never done an honest days work to my knowledge. He belongs to a gang that are a menace to the neighbourhood of Spring Street, and its difficult to get witnesses to come to court to speak against them they are so terrorised. They dare not speak the truth about them" Such was the description given at Sheffield Quarter Sessions by Chief Inspector Andrew of Edward GARVEY (34), a brute who had kicked an innocent woman in a manner that might have caused her death, and who fortunately will be doing hard labour for the next 18 months......................... SHAMBLES OUTRAGE The perpetrators of the recent outrage on sheep in the Sheffield Killing Shambles appeared at the Sheffield Police Court. They were four small boys the oldest being 12 yrs of age who came from Porter Street, Burgess Street, Pinstone Street and Cross Burgess Street and they all admitted having maliciously maimed a sheep belonging to David CRAWSHAW, butcher. The four boys went into the Shambles on Sunday 26th March where they obtained ropes which they fastened around the necks of the sheep awaiting slaughter. They then mounted the animals and rode them up and down the yard until the animals were exhausted. One fell down and broke its neck. The magistrates ordered each of the delinquents to receive six strokes of the birch rod. 3. Hi, I have just rejoined the list, after some time researching family in other areas. I am searching for a Henry MASTERS born abt 1847-48 somewhere in Yorkshire and finally have what I think may be a lead. I have found the following three sets of MASTERS in the 1861 Sheffield Census online at www.familyhistoryonline.net Piece and Folio 3496/49F ================== John G MASTERS Age 43 Birth place -------, IRL Henry M D MASTERS Age 14 Birth place Hounslow, MDX Robert W MASTERS Age 5 Birth place London, MDX Piece and Folio 3494/12B =================== Elizabeth MASTERS Age 50 Birth place Bedford, BDF Piece and Folio 3474/117F ==================== Ann MASTERS Age 50 Birth place Warwick, --- I was wondering if anyone has access to this census if they could perhaps give me the street addresses of these three households. Also, I'm interested in the occupations and marital status, and if I've missed anyone by the name of MASTERS on these three pages. Thanks, Charlotte Edwards Vancouver, B.C. Canada

Regards Kay-UK -----Original Message----- From: Hugh Waterhouse [mailto:dalum@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: 15 April 2005 00:05 To: ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SHEFF] GRANDMOTHER; CAROLINE LYDIA SCOTT BUT KNOWN AS CAROLINE LYDIA PAISLEY IN 1919 hello Elizabeth, This may complicate matters !... The 1919-20 White's Directory for Sheffield has the following entry: 583 Penistone Rd ARCHER Mrs Caroline L midwife There are no PAISLEYs or PISLEYs in this directory. There are some PASLEYs including: William Hy PASLEY 79 Countess Road engraver This is near St Mary's Church, Bramall Lane - a long way from Penistone Rd. The usefullness of the electoral registers may be limited for the following reasons: No electoral registers were compiled in Sheffield between the volumes for 1914/15 and 1920. The right to vote was subject to a property qualification (which could include the rented property as well as ownership) so that there was only one vote per household. Women only appear where they are heads of household. Caroline could appear if she was living on her own for part of this period, but it won't be possible to link her with William this way (unless, for example, they were living in adjacent properties !). It would be possible to check the address in Penistone Road in the electoral rolls for the years 1907-1915 and 1920. If no relevant names are found then some other information may be needed to locate at least William, because there is no name index. Other directories may help. A couple of things I am not clear about... Is SCOTT her maiden name or her married name ? (was she in fact married to your grandfather?). Similarly, is MACE the married name of her sister ? You say she died in the Union Infirmary. Was that Sheffield Union or Ecclesall Union ? (the city was covered by two unions). Have you looked for a possible newspaper report of the inquest?
