    1. 1841 census
    2. Judy Woodley
    3. Hello, I wonder if anyone has the actual 1841 census that might fill the additional information I need for this family. Piece No: 1337/5 ED: 10 Folio: 27b Charles Street, Sheffield South John DRIVER age 50 Hannah DRIVER age 58 William DRIVER age 25 Elizabeth DRIVER age 20 My problem is that there is a Caroline DRIVER age 20 and an Elizabeth DRIVER age 15 at this same address and I have no idea how they are related. I have a hunch they do not, but if relationships were shown in the 1841 census that would be great. The information as to whether they were all born in the county and a page number would be a big help. Did Schedule Numbers exist for the 1841? I know that they rounded off the ages which might explain why both Elizabeth and Caroline are 20 if indeed they are sisters but does not explain why they would have two children with the name Elizabeth. Perhaps the youngest one is grandchild but without relationships it is hard to tell. Thanks for any help. Judy Woodley BC, Canada

    3. Hi Mary Ann, I don't have the 1851 census...................which I believe is NOT name indexed........ I have checked the 1861 census index .......Just to see who was in Sheffield called Drummond at that time...... I found the following....... 3488 55 James DRUMMOND 28 SCT Not Stated 3488 55 Ellen E. DRUMMOND 21 YKS Sheffield 3488 55 Samuel DRUMMOND 1 YKS Sheffield 3488 55 Wilfred H.DRUMMOND 1 YKS Sheffield I wonder if James could be a brother to your William. 3. Hello All, I am hoping that someone can help with a particular DRUMMOND family. I am looking for a William Henry DRUMMOND b.23 Jul 1836 in Sheffield (according to written records kept by his great granddaughter). He emigrated to Canada sometime before 1858. He married Martha Small on 18 Feb 1858 in Mount Forest, Wellington County, Canada. On the 1871 Canadian census he gives his father's birthplace as Scotland and his mother's birthplace as England. His occupation was a shoemaker. So, my question is: Has anyone stumbled upon him in the 1851 census or in any parish record? He would be about 15 years old in 1851. In Canada, the family was Methodist. Also, another family researcher has said that his parents were *possibly* John Jennings Drummond and Charlotte Menzies--she cannot remember where this information came from and it cannot be verified by anyone else. Any information is greatly appreciated, Mary A. Allen Great Smoky Mts, USA

    3. Hi, Thank you to everyone involved with the Sheffield 1841 census project. I haven't been working on my family history for quite a while due to an injury. The first day I sit for more than a minute in front of the computer, I find the link to the site...and so many of my ancestors listed. If anyone has access to the actual 1841 census could you possibly check for additional info on the PLATTS families at Piece no 1327/6 and folio 33a and 33b. I'm a bit confused because I believe some of the youngsters listed at 33b are actually the children of Charles and Mary Platts of 33a. But then a child was dying at that time, so maybe they were staying with Uncle John Platts and his wife Ann. I don't know if this census does reveal relationships? But anything would be helpful. For anyone visiting Ecclesfield, the graves of these family are quite prominent at the front of St Mary's Churchyard. I saw it on a visit a number of years ago and was quite struck by all the children that died in infancy. I recorded the details. A year later I discovered Charles and Mary were my ancestors! Thanks Ann

Will also try to get the JP Bean book but that may have to wait until I'm in Sheffield again. Just done a search on Brisbane city library to see if its here (faint chance I know!) that one isn't but there's a biography on Joe Cocker by the same author! 3. I can't help with the original question but this Broomhead family have been indexed on the 1841 census. John Broomhead 30 Ages for John and Matilda may be rounded Matilda ...... 25 Sarah ......... 4 Elizabeth ..... 1 Ref: 1337/7 15 24b Incidentally there has been a large update to the 1841 index; from 72,000 to 88,000 names in the last couple of days. I can never remember the url but Google on Sheffield Indexers :-) Actually it is, from Elaine's answer :-) http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/1841census/ John Broomhead isn't listed in the 1852 city directory. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

I know that the marriages have been indexed but are not very easy to search as they are in a book format if I remember correctly. The actual PR's being on fiche......The only place to view either is the Sheffield Archives. The Archives have not placed the fiche they have for sale for those of us that can not make it to Sheffield. The LDS will be back to film more but when that is the question. Have you had a look at the NEW 1841 census index........ http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/1841census/ Hope this helps. Kindest regards. 3. Hi to Sheffield List, After a long period of absence from this list, while I was searching another family line, I am rejoining the list and have an interest in the John and Matilda BROOMHEAD family, especially their daughter Anne. I believe they were married in 1836, had several other children, and I know that Anne was born March 28, 1851 (since the 1851 census for the family says they had an UN-NAMED, four-day old daughter and the census was taken on April 1). I have been unable to find her birth certificate; so am now also interested in a baptism record for her. A Sheffield Archivist told me that the family was in St.Peter & Paul (Sheffield Cathedral) parish at that time since they lived first on Sidney Street, then Egerton, and Clarence Streets in various census years. I do know that in the 1861 census this un-named daughter was named Anne, and this girl was my great grandmother Anne BROOMHEAD GATLEY;. Does anyone have a list of this parish's ( or Cathedral's) surnames from around 1836 to 1850 or so that would include this BROOMHEAD family? Would such a list include or be a help in finding their marriage or Anne's baptism? Any help gladly appreciated. Marian Gatley Mahon Richmond, Virginia USA

    3. An old library pamphlet called _Street Names of Central Sheffield_ by Mary Walton says this about Haymarket: "The name Haymarket dates from about 1830, when the then Duke of Norfolk made one of his family's several unsuccessful attempts to establish a hay and corn market in the town. The old name of Haymarket was Bull Stake. Here, certainly, a bull was tied, and it is only too true that the animal may at times have been cruelly baited: but the stake had also a milder function - here the town bull may have stood for hire in the proper season as a sire."
