    3. Hi everyone I am quite new to this so please be patient with me. I am researching my father's side of the family the history so far as I know it is he and his brother was born in Ecclesall Bierlow it seems that is where his parents come from too. My father and his brother were both brought up in a Children's home in sheffield. His parents ANNIE KIRK and WILLIAM BOOTH were apparently both killed in an accident during the 1914-1918 war. As my father ERNEST BOOTH was born in 1916 it must have been after this time. Does anyone out there know how I can find out where and what year this happened. Janet Perth Western Australia

    3. hello Frank, A context and a date could help. I found two references in the Flood Claims, but they don't really help with finding it on the ground. 'Rows' often refer to particular blocks of houses which may not appear on maps. http://www2.shu.ac.uk/sfca/claimDetails.cfm?claim=7-6036 http://www2.shu.ac.uk/sfca/claimSummary.cfm?claim=8-6251 Hugh in Sheffield ----- Original Message ----- From: <Efhell@aol.com> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 30, 2005 1:34 PM Subject: [SHEFF] BLAND ROW > Dear All, > Could anyone tell me where Bland Row (Bradfield or Loxley) was or is > situated. > > Thanks in anticipation > Frank Loy > Hillsborough

    3. Further to my previous message about Bramall Lane: One Thomas Brammall purchased or built the White House, a prominent leasehold property of about 1 Œ acres in White House Lane. The White House included the Brammall file factory, reputed to be the largest in the district, the family home and six dwelling houses, a garden and an orchard. The White House is mentioned in Gatty’s History of Sheffield. I don’t know the exact date, but I think Thomas acquired the White House in the 1760s. The Whitehouse file factory in modern times became Arnold Laver’s. The residence was demolished in 1974. The gate lodge housed men from various regiments during the 1914/18 was and later became a bus depot. Whitehouse Lane became Bramall Lane sometime between 1812 and 1816. The family spelt their name Brammall, but the lane is now spelt Bramall. Thomas Brammall’s son Daniel purchased 4 acres of land adjoining the White House in 1803. In 1816 he built Sheaf House on this land, which was approached by a circular drive from the lane, past a two-storey gate lodge. This later became the Sheaf House pub. The garden became for a time ‘Olympia’, a skating rink – it was this which was to become the Bramall Lane cricket and football ground. Claire

    3. Many thanks to the people who have helped me with the problem of the correct spelling of Bramall Lane. I am still surprised that there are three times as many wrong spellings as right ones. The history of the area that Claire Pearson supplied is interesting to me. White House, Sheaf Lodge, and Sheaf House are all listed on the 1841 census (Piece Number 1337/9. Folio 28a and adjacent folios.) My 3g-grandfather William Naylor lived nearby at the Sheaf Rolling Mill. I would have expected this to be down Clough Road on the river but the address is given as 'Brammall Lane' on certificates. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    3. hello Marian, Gilcar is the name of the district - a name only used in relation to the parish church, which was dedicated to St Silas. This is in Broomhall. The building still exists but ceased to be a church a few years ago. This was a C of E church and the registers are held by Sheffield Archives. Hi list members: I have a question concerning the ecclesiastical parish in the 1861 census for the John and Matilda BROOMHEAD family in Ecclesall Bierlow township of Sheffield. 1. Mary Ann TAYLOR/THOMPSON
    2. Liz
    3. Hi everyone It's a long time since I aired this lady and now I've seen her on yet another census with yet another place of birth, I thought I'd see if anyone can find her. On the 1861 census she's decided she was born in Brightside, Sheffield! Mary Ann appears to have started off life as Mary Ann TAYLOR born around 1823/24. She's been born in Attercliffe, Mexborough and now Brightside! I've had the Attercliffe and Mexborough records checked and she's definitely not there. At some stage she appears to have married a Mr. THOMPSON...she says! By 1846 she's living with Isaac NEEDHAM over in Cutthorpe where she produces 5 children all grew up and carried his name although at least Herbert was registered as Herbert Needham THOMPSON! Then, in 1858 they hop over to Sheffield and marry in the Cathedral and Mary states she's a widow!! On Rootsweb FreeBMD site there's a Mary Ann TAYLOR and a William THOMPSON who married Third Quarter 1844...but, did they marry each other?? There are too many William THOMPSONs who died in Sheffield to even begin to decide which, if any, might be Mary Ann's husband. 2. Harry Dodsworth
    3. I had been having a very frustrating session on the ancestry censuses last night at the LDS, when someone mentioned that the 1861 was available. I immediately put in one of my names, Thomas Fewsdale. I expected several hits but only got one, my man living alone at 25 Stanley Street. I tried two more, my g-grandfather, Fred C Naylor - found him. aged 10 mo., pins down his birthdate as I've never found a GRO reference, and then John Craven and found him. So three for three :-) However, in general, I find the ancestry censuses very irritating. I don't think it is simply a case of poor transcription. In some cases I can find people (among many others) using the ranked search but entering the same data into the exact search returns no hits - so the transcription must be correct but the exact search process must have problems - or else I'm not giving it the right information. I hoped with more experience I would become more successful but last night's experience suggests the opposite - the 1861 successes notwithstanding! -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Bramall Lane
    2. claire pearson
    3. Bramall lane was named after the Bramall famlily who made files. It was originally named Whitehouse Lane. Unfortunately all my notes on this are elsewhere at the moment, but I can look them up and post another message later. The family name was spelt Bramhall originally. I'm told that (although the name was sometimes spelt Bramall and Brammall), there was a family fall-out, and some of them dropped the 'h' to disassociate from the other Bramhalls! No idea if this is true though! Claire
