Hi List, It seems the URL for the 1841 census is causing a problem... so here it is again.... http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/1841census/ Remember you don't need a password unless you want to leave a message on the message board. and there are still 8 pieces to be checked so check back in about a week.... Hi Lesley, First let me say that it is always wise to put on your messages where you are as it helps such as myself steer you in the right direction so you can do some of the legwork..... The GRO indexes are available for you to search at most major Libraries and Archives in England. They are also on line where you can search for a fee. If you live overseas the LDS will have them or if NOT will order them in for you........ >> The birth certificate shows only his mother's name - SELINA MORTON. He was born on 27th June 1843 at Four Lane Ends. As there is no father named am I right to assume it was an unplanned pregnancy, that Selina was probably young and in service with a family. The baby's father was probably the head of household! It is possible that Selina died young, although may have been too young to look after a child. Fred was living with his Grandmother Mary Morton aged 65yrs in 1851 still at Four Lane Ends. She is listed as a pauper widow and was born, I think in Hemsworth.Would the 1841 census be of any use to try and find her husband?<< The 1841 census index is on line have you tried looking for Selina????? http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/1841census/ I think your leap that the head of the household was the father of her child is a bit of stretch but you can at least see where she was in 1841. Hi Elaine and all the others who have given their time to the 41 census, It is a great site and credit to you. Now that you are all at a loose end, [tongue in cheek] how about helping Gordon, me and a couple of others, who are transcribing the ongoing 71 index. I am sure it would get done a lot quicker, than we are able to do it at the moment, if we had some help. Carol , Sheffield
Where is the burial ground located please. and where do you purchase certificates for this place. thanks marea --------------------------------- Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Movies.

Guess which ones still need checking............LOL Just want to say as others will read this mail that there may indeed be errors, you may need to fish around once they are all on the site as the writing was awful in some cases.......We did the best we could.......but.... ...some names made more than one of us scratch our heads wondering what it was. I would like to add my congratulations to the indexers and the support team. I'm amazed how quickly the job got done. Now a question about Piece Numbers - were these sequential? Most seem to be from the "What's Online" page. If so what has happened to Pieces 1329/1 and 1329/3 for Brightside Bierlow (and possibly 1329/6)? From What's Online 1329/2 Brightside Bierlow 2,066 19-Mar-2005 1329/4 Brightside Bierlow 1,789 22-Apr-2005 1329/5 Brightside Bierlow 2,264 29-Mar-2005 -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------
Marea wrote <<Where is the burial ground located please. and where do you purchase certificates for this place.>> The burial ground is in the gardens of two private houses that have been constructed out of the Quaker Meeting House. It is situated on Meeting House Lane at Woodhouse. There is a walled off part where some of the gravestones are placed around the wall. These only amount to perhaps 2 dozen graves. The remainder are buried in what is now the gardens of the two houses. It is said that approx. five hundred were buried there originally. The records should be in Sheffield archives. In their booklet 'Non conformist registers ', it says Woodhouse included in Balby. [ This is near Doncaster] Marr 1837 1915 QR46a Burs 1883-1909 MD 3510/1-2 Burs 1865-1868 337/X2/5 (M.f.) It doesn't mention baptisms. I would imagine that any certificates would be purchased from Sheffield register office, if they were a Sheffield family. Carol.
Hello, Approximately two weeks ago some very helpful soul gave me a GRO Ref for Frederick MORTON. I sent for the certificate which arrived yesterday. The birth certificate shows only his mother's name - SELINA MORTON. He was born on 27th June 1843 at Four Lane Ends. As there is no father named am I right to assume it was an unplanned pregnancy, that Selina was probably young and in service with a family. She is listed as a pauper widow and was born, I think in Hemsworth.Would the 1841 census be of any use to try and find her husband? I would like to extend a big thankyou to Angela Lee (Eckington) for her help, I just realised I saved the message. Lesley
Final Update....... The 1841 Census Index has been completed......... There are about eight pieces to be checked and then they will be placed on the net. To ALL the **indexers** thank you for your time and patience. From the mail I have received it has been deemed a very worth while project We have helped many researchers from all over the world to have access to material they would not otherwise have. So until next time..... Kindest regards. Elaine in Ottawa Sheffield Indexers 1841 Census Coordinator http://www.sheff-indexers.thewholeshebang.org/ -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Hello Carol. You have access to your own medical records at anytime. The Data Protection Act 1998 permits access to all manual health records whenever made, and digitised records. Have a word with the receptionist at your Doctors, they may make a charge though, for you to access them. Regards Angela (LEE) Eckington U.K.
Ewan wrote <<I don't know if anyone can help but I was wondering if anyone had tried to access UK medical records for a deceased relative and how they went about it.>> I have been wondering about this myself lately. My 3year old grandson has just had chicken pox and I was wary of catching it. I can never remember having it. I think I would have remembered the itching and scratching. I would like to look at my own records to find exactly what I have had regards various childhood illnesses. As my parents are now passed on, there is no one to ask. I wondered if you had to write to the Sheffield Health Authority at Brincliffe House, 90, Osborne Road, Sheffield 11. If they are still there. Carol, Sheffield

Hi Sorry to tell you this but both Fulwood and Ranmoor Churches were not built at this time so before looking through the Church registers, do check which parishes covered the area in 1841 or earlier. If you could look for them in the 1851 census, it would give you the place where the bride was born and as brides often married in their own parish, that could help. You could try Ecclesall Church which was established then or even St. Peter's Church, Sheffield [now Cathedral]. Hi Bryn, >>James WORRALL and Sarah Ann HINCHLIFF. On the 1841 cens I have them living at the Ranmoor Inn, so the marriage was prior to that << Before you drive yourself crazy here is what I think..........LOL. Lets say they married circa 1840 as I didn't notice any children on the 1841 census.... Christ Church, Canterbury Ave, Fulwod was not built till 1838..... and the first marriages took place 1851. However if it worked the same as it did for Ecclesall Parish Church a ceremony could have indeed taken place in the building but the event would be registered in the Parish Churches Registers. The chance of that having happened is probably quite slim and I would like to bet they were married at the Cathedral...... that is unless they were Methodist and were married in one of the few Chapels around....but I would bet on the Cathedral. (Parish Church)......... So the moral of the story is, we need the Cathedral Records to be filmed so we can have all our brick walls to come tumbling down. But don't hold your breath....LOL. Hi Sarah Doncaster was in the West Riding, now classed as South Yorkshire. I live in the Doncaster area, but don't do much research there as my ancestors all moved there during the early to mid 1900's. What's your question, and I will see if I can help, or if not I have the address of the Doncaster group. Kind Regards Kay-UK Researching: CLUFF/CLOUGH (Whaplode Drove, Wisbech St Mary?) Hello list I would like to ask if anyone has come across the name SHIMWELL - particularly Albert Shimwell and his wife Rose Hannah (nee NORMAN) I have managed to find their first daughter Elsie who was born in 1902 in Attercliffe, Sheffield but I cannot find any other information and would be grateful for any help - Albert and Rosehannah are married on 1901. Many thanks Sarah Norman
Hi Clive I bought some old photos at a car boot sale yesterday, and was told they were of Staceys who had a car dealership in Ecclesall Rd. Victorian men in big hats :-) Do you think they might be connected to you? The dealer we bought them off said he had cleared the offices of the business and he is at the boot sale every week, so I could ask him more if there is a connection.
