    3. Alan, I have just had a look on Ancestry for you and have found the following family which may be yours, you'll have to decide. If you would like the image to study I can mail it to you off-list. 1891 Census Civil Parish: Heeley Minicipal Ward: Nether Hallam 83 Alexandra Road Thomas H. JEFFREY, Head, Married, Age: 35, Occ: Table Knife Buffer, Born: Notts. Old Radford Sarah J. JEFFREY, Wife, Married, Age: 33, Born: Staffs, Wolverhampton John E. JEFFREY, Brother, Widower, Age: 30, Occ: Heraldic Engraver, Born: Notts, Old Radford Charles J. JEFFREY, Nephew, Age: 8, Scholar, Born: YKS, Sheffield Herbert S. JEFFREY, Niece, Age: 12, Scholar, Born: YKS, Sheffield All of the names you mentioned (apart from George) appear in this family although Florence & Edith are cousins to this Charles. One other thing, next to the surname of 75 year old James JEFFREY it has the letters "St", I don't know if this means he was Thomas' step-father or maybe it means something else, maybe someone else on the list may be able to throw some light on it. Looks like the house was pretty well packed. Don't forget, if you want the image just mail me and I will send it to you. Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp. 3. Everything comes to him who waits :-) I asked about Piece Number 1329/1 of Brightside Bierlow. Elaine confirmed this was one of the last pieces being checked. Indeed it was put online last week and six Fewsdales (my connections) were present on Stanley Street, Wicker, just where expected.(Part of Stanley Street was in the pieces which have been available for some time, which was part of my confusion.) -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    1. YKS Surnames List Update - 15 May 2005
    2. Dear Listers, I received a heartfelt appeal that I wish to share with everyone who has submitted or is thinking of submitting one or more surnames. «I am very disappointed with the response I have received, or more to the point not received, from various people who have put names forward on the Yorkshire surname list. Sometimes, just in case they never received the first email, I have contacted them again but to no avail. What I don't understand is why people put names forward if they have no intention or cannot be bothered to reply to queries. Not only does this cause you unnecessary work it also destroys my confidence in the list. However, I will still continue to watch out for my name interests as there must be some kind person on the list who will acknowledge my query.» I share this person's disappointment. Believe me, I couldn't care less whether there are 200 or 20,000 surnames on this list. The most important is that the list serves as a database for other researchers. If you have submitted surnames and are no longer interested in being contacted, do let me know and I'll remove your submissions. You don't even have to list the names - just send me your email address. No problem at all. I'm sure you are all kind souls at heart. Nuff said. 3. Hello Liz, I can't help you with your SWIFT family but I have just searched the Bradfield 1851 Census and found two possible George HELLIWELLs. One of the George's is aged 9 and living with his parents, Isaac & Alice HELLIWELL, the other George is aged 7 and living with his widowed (pauper) mother Hannah and brother Benjamin. Folio: 588F, District: 18, Schedule: 80 Royd (Bradfield) Isaac HELLIWELL, Head, Married, Aged: 35, Occ: Agricultural Labourer, Born: YKS, Bradfield Alice HELLIWELL, Wife, Married, Aged: 32, Born: YKS, Ecclesfield John SMITH, Son/Law, Aged: 13, Occ: Coal Miner, Born: YKS, Ecclesfield Charles SMITH, Son/Law, Aged: 11, Occ: Coal Miner, Born: YKS, Ecclesfield George HELLIWELL, Son, Single, Aged: 9, Occ: Umbrella Maker, Born: YKS, Bradfield Elizabeth HELLIWELL, Daughter, Single, Aged: 7, Scholar, Born: YKS, Bradfield Lidia SMITH, Dau/Law, Aged: 7, Scholar, Born: DBY, Barlborough Thomas SMITH, Son./Law, Aged: 3 Born: YKS, Bradfield Ann HELLIWELL, Daughter, Aged: ? (not shown), Born: YKS, Bradfield Folio: 318B, District: 5, Schedule: 9 Brightholmlee (Bradfield) Hannah HELLIWELL, Head, Widow, Aged: 37, Occ: Pauper, Born: YKS, Bradfield George HELLIWELL, Son, Single, Aged: 7, Born: YKS, Bradfield Benjamin HELLIWELL, Son, Aged: 4, Born: YKS, Bradfield In the first family I can only assume that the relationship to head (ie: Son or Daughter in Law) may mean that the elder SMITH children may have been Alice's from a previous marriage, not sure about the younger ones. Do any of these two George's look like they might be yours? Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp. 1. Death of George Guest probably 1865
    2. George Guest was born in 1836 in Rotherham, but is found on the 1861 Census aged 25 a Coachman with his wife Sarah aged 19 and her sister Hannah aged 20. George and Sarah had married on August 2 1860 at Wicker Parish Church Sheffield and a daughter was born named Emma in 1862. I suspect that he died in 1865 Sept quarter. He does not appear on the 1871 census. Would anyone with access to the NBI kindly see if they can identify him. Regards, Stuart

    3. Thanks for the quick response to my query. Although there are lots of Stead families, the family of Thomas had an ' E ' on the end of the name. The family that Dick sent to me appears to be the right one in 71, according to the names of his children, and I have found some of them in Buxton, visiting another sister in 81, but Thomas was not there and I haven't been able to locate him, whether or not, I put an 'E ' on the end of his name. I have searched anywhere and everywhere, but cannot find him on the 81 census. I have found some of his family in Derbyshire but he is not with them. He died in 1889 so should be around somewhere. Any help appreciated. Carol, Sheffield

    3. Hi Jeremy, I think it's fascinating that you can still see traces of where roads and lanes used to be, even in the depths of cities like Sheffield. Of course in some places they've so radically changed the street layout that it's difficult to get your bearings, but there are a lot of clues to where our ancestors lived and worked. Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember some of the older streets! Perhaps the fact that I lived away from Sheffield for so many years, has left those memories intact. I find that I try to drive along streets that used to link up, but don't go where I expect them to go, these days! Or they're one way streets now! :-) Cheers Richard Jeremy Crawshaw wrote: > Hi Richard, > > You're right. 3. Stuart, I have found a George GUEST living with his wife Sarah in the Park District of Sheffield in 1861. This George has the occupation of Carter, is aged 25 (and Sarah is aged 23), George was born in Durham though so this (and the fact that Sarah is too old) will probably not be them. This couple do not have any children with them either. I have saved the image should you want it. Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp.
