    3. As Temporary List Administrator may I politely remind everyone that the list is not to be used for off-topic discussions such as this. If the people concerned want to carry on this thread would you please pursue this privately and not via the list. Please remember that the list is to be used for the discussion of Sheffield & Rotherham related family & local history and not for any off-topic discussions. Please keep it friendly and keep it on-topic. Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp. We get enough spam without unmunged addresses being published like this, I don't like publishing email addresses, but it is equally irresponsible for people to sign up and enter names in a database and then ignore changes so that other researchers are continuously inconvenienced by bouncing emails. If those e-mail addresses are dead anyway how is it going to hurt if they're harvested? Surely the whole point of them being listed was that any mail sent to them is bouncing? Just a thought!

    3. Any serious web crawler could go to the YKS Surnames List Home Page and click on each and every «EMAIL» and collect all the addresses there. I don't like publishing email addresses, but it is equally irresponsible for people to sign up and enter names in a database and then ignore changes so that other researchers are continuously inconvenienced by bouncing emails. It is not as if I didn't repeatedly tell people what to do when they change emails. If you had to delete dozens of entries at a time because of irresponsible submitters, you would probably understand. Besides, all any harvester has to do is go to the archives for any one of the lists on rootsweb and pick out the emails of people who post messages. I hate spam as much as most people, but I really think that one can go overboard with concern. A good spam filter does wonders. 2. Joan Marsden
    3. An enormous "Thank you" to Hugh Waterhouse and Jeremy Crawshaw. They've solved the the question of Belfield House which has puzzled me for some years. I had searched for Belfield and Bellfield - but never thought to look for Bellefield. The Rev Mr Grindrod must be related to Sarah Grindrod. Emily Cussons' father was a Methodist Lay Preacher. She went on to marry Rev Thomas Fletcher a Primitive Methodist Minister and two of Emily and Thomas' daughters became Evangelists. I'm certain that Emilys parents would have insisted that she went to a school with a strong Methodist connection. 3. Hello Joan & Hugh, Joan, I have found the 1861 entry for you that Hugh mentions below which I will send to you off-list. The address mentioned for her simply says 'Sunny Bank' and the address of the property before this one is 37 Broomhall Place. Sarah is the head of the household, a widow, and her occupation is given as 'Proprietor of Houses' Best Wishes Jeremy Crawshaw (Temp. 3. hello Joan, GRINDROD - great name for a schoolteacher ! (I am reading Dickens's Hard Times at the moment where the teacher is Thomas GRADGRIND) Belfield St, Lane, Place etc were in Netherthorpe. Bellefield St still exists but the name had one 'l' in the 1852 Directory. That Directory lists her as Mrs Sarah Grindrod, Belfield House, without mentioning the school. As this is a very unusual name in Sheffield, I suspect she may be related in some way to this person: from the Local Register (digest of local newspaper stories) 18 Aug 1835 Sittings of [Wesleyan] Conference [in Sheffield] closed. The Rev. Mr Grindrod appointed superintendent of the Sheffield West Circuit, and the Rev Mr Treffry of the East. Somebody may be able to check this reference in 1861, which I think may be her: GRINDOD Sarah 62 YKS Hipperholme 3469 62F Investigation of other directories may help. Also, there is a good chance that this school would have advertised in the newspapers. 1. Re: [SHEFF] Searching for 20th century ancestors
    2. In a message dated 28/05/2005 10:54:53 GMT Standard Time, angela.monaghan@virgin.net writes: Can anyone please advise what sources I can use, other than the BMD indexes - are telephone directories and electoral roles useful? How do I find out about wills? etc. Hi I think that tracing family can in some ways be a lot harder in the C20. If you have parents still around then they can be very helpful about aunts and uncles. Grandparents can aslso give you a good insight into what has gone before but do remember that memories can play them false so you need to try and back up their information. However, you say you haven't many relatives around so just glean what you can, if you can. Electoral Rolls can be very useful but just remember that unless a child is old enough to vote they will not be on the list. I still think that marriage and birth certificates can reveal an awful lot of helpful information. These are all available on line at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp and can be bought by credit card. If you do not have the actual dates then you could use _www.1837online.com_ (http://www.1837online.com) which is pay per view site but for £5. you can have 55 units which is several years. I think you would find this site very useful as FreeBMD doesn't work much in the C20 yet. Wills can sometimes give a wealth of information and you could have a look at this site. _http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Probate.html_ (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Probate.html) I hav en't found much in telephone directories and unless you intent to ring up people for your information I cannot see that they would give you a lot of information. I hope some of these get you started. Best wishes JUDY ELKINGTON _http://www.elkingtonfamily.com_ (http://www.elklingtonfamily.com/) ELKINGTON-L@rootsweb.com http://www.one-name.org/profiles/elkington.html
