    3. The LDS have filmed and extracted some baptisms from Queen Street Chapel. I don't know when they stopped (usually about 1840). I found the baptism of Sarah Ellen Fewsdale on 01 Jan 1835 on the IGI. There are a number of Merrills listed on the Sheffield Flood Claims site http://extra.shu.ac.uk/sfca Thanks to Jeremy for the interesting history of the chapel. -- Harry Dodsworth Ottawa Ontario Canada af877@freenet.carleton.ca ----------------------------------------------------------------

    3. Hi Hugh, Thank you again for all your help with my Belfield House query. You and Jeremy have told me more about the school, and its occupants, than I'd managed to find in the last five years or so. I'm now looking forward to trying to find the connection between Sarah Grindrod and 'our' Emily. Regards, Joan (in Bucks) Looking at the 1851 census entry for the school, I'm wondering if your Emily CUSSONS could actually be related to Sarah GRINDROD, whose mother was also a CUSSONS. The school in Belfield House was previously run by the Misses Fawcett (Marianne and Martha). The address, confusingly, seems to be in Fawcett St rather then Bellefield St. There is an engraving of the house on http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/database_search.php - search for Fawcett St, or type Bellefield in the bottom seach box. In that view, Bellefield St runs behind the house. I think, but I am not sure, that Fawcett St runs along the side of the garden to the left (out of the picture). The other side of Fawcett St is where St Stephen's Church was built at the end of the 1850's. The version of Picture Sheffield available in the Local Studies Library has three versions of the engraving. One is used as a heading for the following manuscript certificate: "Presented by the Misses Fawcett to Miss Heppenstall as a token of approbation for answering Geographical Questions with credit and satisfaction. belfield House Decr 17th 1835" Hugh in Sheffield ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan Marsden" <joan@marsden001.wanadoo.co.uk> To: <ENG-SHEFFIELD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 4:48 PM Subject: [SHEFF] Where is Belfield House? > My husbands great-grandmother Emily CUSSONS - born 1835 in Horncastle, Lincs - went to school near Sheffield. > > The address of the school was BELFIELD HOUSE, Nr Sheffield. 3. Hi Aileen, I think that the area is known as t'Wicker, as well as having a wide street of that name. Apparently, according to J Edward Vickers, the open area north of the river used to be called Assembly Green (or 'Sembley Green), and was used for an assembly or muster of the yeomen and freeholders with their horse and arms, annually. 3. hello Barry, I cannot find the specific units you mention in 'From Bailey to Bailey: A Short History of Military Buildings in Sheffield' by Stephen Johnson. However, I strongly suspect that the 3rd West Riding Field Company (Territorial Force), R.E would have had its headquarters at what became known as the Somme Barracks, on the corner of Glossop Road and Gell Street. It is possible that the 20th Territorial Force Depot refers to another building/establishment associated with the Somme Barracks. Looking at this excerpt from a 'lineage' of West Riding Engineers at http://www.regiments.org ... 1860 West Riding Engineer Volunteers formed with HQ at Sheffield 1908.04.01 West Riding Division Engineers transferred to T.F. with HQ at Sheffield 1st West Riding Field Company at Sheffield 2nd West Riding Field Company at Sheffield 1914 1st West Riding Division RE formed duplicate 2nd West Riding Division RE 455 Field Company at Sheffield 456 Field Company at Sheffield 1915 49th (1st West Riding) Division RE ...the 1st and 2nd Field Companies certainly had their Headquarters at the above Barracks and I assume that the 3rd Company joined them on its creation during the War. Surprisingly, I could not find any photos of this Barracks at http://www.picturesheffield.co.uk/database_search.php but there is a photo here http://citysnapper.org/chantrey/sheffield/sheffield1c.htm (right at the bottom). This building still belongs to the MOD and is the headquarters of the University Officer Training Corps. 2. Hi Is anyone descended from or familiar with the family of WHITWORTH from Burrow Lees House at Hillsborough. The family is descended from William Rawson Surplice Whitworth of Nottingham. Although William set up as a Pawnbroker in Sheffield before 1840 the family were originally from Nottingham. The Whitworths of Burrow Lees were Frederick Whitworth son of WRS Whitworth, his wife Anna [Hannah] Maria Parkin and their children Herbert b.1869, William P. Whitworth b.1874 and Ruth A. Whitworth 1879. Their father was a Coal Owner and Merchant and moved onto making Stove Grates by 1901. They were all at home in the 1901 census at Burrow Lees. If anyone has any connection to this family especially after 1901 could you please let me have any information.

    3. Is the Wicker one long street, or is it a surrounding area? I note in the Big Flood appeals for re-imbursment, that addresses such as Andrews Street, Wicker and Shelden Street, Wicker are mentioned. I am making a detailed search of the Wicker in years 1891-1900 and have seen the census for 1891 where I could list all the shops, houses etc on the Wicker but for 1901 it is not so as I can't order the film in to search. Maybe there is a street directory for the mid-1890s that will help me. I would need a list of all places on the Wicker. If the Wicker area is larger then I may not succeed in the 'look-up' I need. Details are unclear form my 'source' so I may have to realise that my chances are slim of finding the family I seek (surname unknown at present) Aileen in Australia
